What is the bearish move?
A bear call spread is an options strategy that profits if a stock stays below a chosen level or falls, depending on the strikes and expiration selected. The IBD listing names this strategy in connection with Moderna (NASDAQ: MRNA), but does not provide the actual option legs. Without those terms, readers cannot calculate a maximum profit, maximum loss, breakeven price, or time window for the proposed setup.
The listing’s thesis is that Moderna could see profit-taking after a large rally and may have limited near-term upside. That is a market view, not an outcome guaranteed by the strategy or by the available reporting. A bear call spread is not a short sale and is not the same as selling an uncovered, or naked, call: it pairs a short call with a higher-strike long call to cap the spread’s risk at expiration.
Why did Moderna draw a bearish analyst call?
In a Dow Jones report dated September 30, 2026, Citi analyst Geoff Meacham cut Moderna from Hold to Sell but raised his price target from $60 to $80. The report tied the downgrade to the sharp share-price rally after Moderna and Merck updated investors on intismeran autogene, their cancer-vaccine candidate. Meacham argued that the valuation reflected optimistic expectations for success across multiple tumor types and the resulting sales; this was his judgment, not an established conclusion about the drug’s prospects. Dow Jones reported that Moderna shares had gained nearly 590% year to date heading into the Wednesday, September 30 session, compared with a 12% rise in the S&P 500 over the same comparison. It also reported a 5.7% premarket decline to $191.96 that Wednesday. These are dated figures from financial reporting, not independently verified current market data, and they should not be read as today’s price or performance.
Meacham’s view was not the only rating reported at the time. The same report cited a FactSet snapshot of 19 firms excluding Citi: six Buy, 11 Hold, and two Sell or equivalent. That was a point-in-time count, not a current consensus or proof that the market had settled on one view.

What the reported trial update does—and does not—show
The Dow Jones coverage said the latest intismeran trial met its main goal, but that detailed results had not been disclosed in that report. It pointed to the European Society for Medical Oncology meeting in late October 2026 as a possible venue for further details. Accordingly, the report alone does not establish the size, durability, or clinical importance of the observed benefit.
The article attributed two interpretive thresholds to Meacham: a recurrence-free-survival hazard ratio around 0.72 as “clinical credible,” and 0.65 or lower as “a clear win.” These are his stated views, not accepted clinical standards, regulatory cutoffs, or substitutes for evaluating the full trial design, data, safety profile, and statistical uncertainty. The coverage also quoted him saying, “While intismeran could become a market leading therapy in melanoma, we believe the re-rating now reflects successful expansion in many tumor types and unrealistic implied sales.”

What readers would need before evaluating a spread
The headline and teaser do not supply enough information to judge whether a particular bear call spread is attractive. At minimum, the actual position would need to identify:
- Both call strikes: the short strike where the spread begins to lose value and the higher long strike that caps the loss.
- Expiration: the date by which the bearish thesis must play out; a catalyst or data release during the holding period could materially change the risk.
- Net credit and contract multiplier: the premium received for opening the spread and the amount represented by each contract.
- Maximum gain, maximum loss, and breakeven: figures calculated from the actual strikes and credit, not inferable from the headline.
- Volatility and liquidity: option prices can move as implied volatility and bid-ask spreads change, even when the share price has not moved as expected.
A positive clinical update, a broader market rally, or other company news could push MRNA higher and work against the bearish thesis. Conversely, a price decline does not guarantee a profitable spread: the result depends on entry credit, strikes, expiration, and the path of volatility. The missing trade terms prevent a meaningful comparison with a long put, short stock, or another bearish position.

How to read the headline responsibly
Treat the IBD headline as a description of a possible strategy idea, not a complete order or an instruction to trade. The source listing attributes the piece to Gavin McMaster and dates it October 1, 2026; its teaser says “With potential profit-taking on the horizon.” Neither that language nor Citi’s downgrade confirms that Moderna has peaked. The analyst call centers on valuation assumptions around oncology, while any conclusion about the vaccine candidate depends on detailed clinical evidence.
