Menlo Ventures has invested in Factory as part of the AI software-development company’s latest financing round, announced at a reported $5 billion valuation. The announcement came shortly after a public dispute involving Factory CEO Matan Grinberg, investor Chris Degnan, Cognition and Vinod Khosla. Menlo did not disclose its check size, and it has not said its investment was a response to Khosla’s criticism.

What happened between Factory and Khosla?

The dispute centered on Factory co-founder and CEO Matan Grinberg’s account of Chris Degnan’s departure from an advisory role. TechCrunch reported that Grinberg said he removed Degnan because he feared Degnan may have shared confidential information with Cognition, a Factory competitor. Degnan, who had joined Cognition as its chief revenue officer, disputed that account: he said he resigned and had rebuffed a competing job offer from Grinberg. The available reporting does not resolve their conflicting accounts.

TechCrunch reported that Vinod Khosla, whose firm invested in both Factory and Cognition, criticized Factory as a “struggling second tier competitor” and accused Grinberg of lying and impugning Degnan’s character. The report described Khosla’s full characterization as calling Factory a desperate “struggling second tier competitor.” These are Khosla’s reported words and allegations, not independently established findings.

Why did Menlo invest in Factory?

Menlo Ventures announced that partner Matt Murphy and his team invested in Factory’s latest financing round. The round was announced the previous month at a $5 billion valuation, according to TechCrunch. Menlo did not disclose its investment amount. TechCrunch, citing an unnamed source familiar with the deal, reported that the investment was significant to Menlo and that the firm would have invested more if there had been room on the cap table. TechCrunch’s October 5, 2026 report provides the account of the investment and the dispute.

Menlo’s announcement praised Factory’s founders, technology and customer relationships. The timing and positive tone make the investment a public show of confidence in Factory, but neither Menlo nor the reporting established that the firm intended it as an answer to Khosla.

What does Factory do?

Menlo describes Factory as a “software factory” designed to automate more of software development than code generation alone. Its account of the platform includes planning, code review, testing, security, documentation and coordination. The distinction is between asking an assistant to produce or complete code and delegating a defined engineering objective to agents, then reviewing the outcome. These are Menlo’s descriptions of Factory’s product and positioning, not an independent assessment of its capabilities.

Menlo also says Factory supports shared enterprise context and governance, model choice and sovereign deployment. In its announcement, the firm named Nvidia and Blackstone as enterprise customers and said Factory serves hundreds of thousands of developers. Those customer and reach figures are claims made by Factory’s investor, not independently audited counts in the available reporting. Menlo’s investment announcement lays out its view of the product and market.

How large is the AI coding market, according to Menlo?

Menlo’s 2026 article says the coding market grew from $550 million to $4 billion to more than $30 billion in two years and now captures almost half of all AI application spending. These are Menlo’s market estimates, not independently verified figures in the reporting cited here. Menlo also says GitHub commits are “up 6x,” but its cited passage does not state the baseline period; the figure should not be read as a defined year-over-year or other specific growth rate.

What the investment signals—and what it does not

Menlo’s participation in a round valued at $5 billion signals the firm’s confidence in Factory, even as the company drew public criticism from Khosla. It does not establish that Menlo endorses every claim made during the dispute, that the allegations about confidential information are true, or that the investment was intended to counter Khosla. The clearest supported account is narrower: Menlo invested, publicly praised Factory, and did so after the dispute became a subject of reporting.
