That count and placement are a user-reported observation, not an independently audited finding. The post does not establish the app’s package name, developer, permissions, target countries, or whether Google has removed it.
A sponsored result and a large install badge are not proof that an app is genuine. If you installed the listing, do not enter a phone number, verification code, password, payment details, or chat-backup credentials until you have verified the publisher.
What is confirmed—and what is not
The Reddit post titled “Fake sponsored WhatsApp dupe has 500k downloads and appears before the real app” is the source of the 500,000 figure and the claim that the listing appeared first. It does not provide enough verifiable metadata to identify a specific malware family. Treat the listing as a reported impersonation incident, not proof that every app with a similar name is malicious.
The important lesson is broader: criminals can buy prominent placement and accumulate downloads while imitating a familiar service. McAfee Labs advises ignoring install counts as a trust signal; some impersonating apps in its investigations had tens of thousands of downloads.
Why a WhatsApp copy can appear before the real app
Google Play can show sponsored results before organic listings. An advertiser may therefore appear at the top even when another publisher owns the authentic application. Search ranking and the download badge describe visibility and activity, not authenticity.
Look-alike apps commonly use a familiar logo, near-identical name, screenshots, and claims about extra features. Some function as web redirects or subscription funnels rather than messaging clients. Others request information that has nothing to do with the feature promised. A listing can also remain available long enough to collect installs before automated or human review catches it.

How to distinguish the legitimate app
Check several independent signals rather than relying on one badge. The reported listing’s developer and package name were not established in the available account, so do not assume a particular copy is the same app.

Install count is not a tie-breaker. McAfee’s RewaFake investigation found impersonating applications with substantial download numbers, and its guidance is to ignore those numbers as a trust signal.

What other 2026 investigations found
Fabricated WhatsApp-related data
Android Authority summarized ESET’s CallPhantom research, which identified 28 Google Play apps with more than 7.3 million combined downloads. They promised access to call, SMS, and WhatsApp history for any phone number, charged users, and returned fabricated data. Google removed the identified apps after ESET reported them. The campaign shows why a promise to reveal another person’s messages or call records is inherently suspicious: a normal app cannot provide data it is not authorized to access.
Redirect and subscription fraud
McAfee Labs’ RewaFake report, dated October 7, 2026, identified more than 1,900 unique applications on over 500,000 devices in more than 190 countries. The apps impersonated familiar brands and used remote configuration to send victims into advertising and subscription-fraud funnels. McAfee observed charges of up to $49.99 per month in those funnels. The exact billing, geography, and app behavior varied, so those figures should not be treated as characteristics of the Reddit-reported listing.

How to remove an unofficial WhatsApp safely
- Stop using it. Do not provide a phone number, one-time code, password, payment information, or backup credentials.
- Preserve evidence. Capture the listing, developer name, permissions, and any receipts or messages before uninstalling.
- Uninstall the app. In Android, open Settings, then Apps, select the suspicious WhatsApp copy, and choose Uninstall. If Android blocks removal, first revoke any device-administrator or accessibility access shown in that app’s settings, then uninstall.
- Install the official client. WhatsApp’s Help Center says to remove the unofficial version and download WhatsApp or WhatsApp Business from WhatsApp’s official website. Use the verified listing published by WhatsApp LLC when arriving through that route.
- Re-register your number. Complete verification in the official app and review linked devices and account-security settings for sessions you do not recognize.
- Check your money and accounts. Contact the payment provider about third-party charges. For Google Play billing, use Google’s applicable refund process. Change any password entered into the copy and enable available two-step or multifactor protection.
- Report the listing. Report it to Google Play and WhatsApp, attaching screenshots and the developer information you saved.
What happens to your chats?
WhatsApp says unofficial versions violate its terms and can put privacy, security, and safety at risk. Its Help Center warns: “If you’ve received this Play Protect Warning from Google, you’re likely using an unofficial version of WhatsApp.” WhatsApp also says, “We can’t guarantee that your chat history will transfer because WhatsApp doesn’t support unofficial apps.” Keep that limitation in mind before uninstalling, and do not trust a copy that promises guaranteed recovery or access to someone else’s history.

The practical verdict
The 500,000-download WhatsApp dupe is currently a reported Play Store incident, not a fully identified malware case. The safe response is unchanged: disregard sponsored placement and install counts, verify the publisher and package details, remove unofficial software, reinstall through WhatsApp’s official route, secure the account, and report suspicious billing or listings.
