After a month moving between VS Code, Cursor, and Zed, the editor that felt least intrusive was Zed. That is a personal verdict, not a universal ranking: the best fit depends on your extensions, your team’s conventions, and how much you want AI embedded in the editing flow. The month matters because it made everyday interruptions more visible than feature checklists did—but it does not establish a benchmark or a controlled test.
What “gets out of the way” meant in this comparison
I judged the editors by how much attention they demanded while I was trying to work: whether the interface kept me focused on code, whether familiar workflows carried over, and whether AI edits were easy to inspect. A month of use is enough to form a preference, but it is not a substitute for testing your own languages, extensions, machine, and project. No recorded machine specifications, extension inventory, or measured performance results are available here, so I won’t pretend this was a reproducible benchmark.
That distinction matters. Vendor feature pages can explain what an editor is designed to do; they cannot establish which one will feel fastest or produce the best AI suggestions for your code. My verdict is about the day-to-day experience I came away with, while the product details below are attributed to their source.
How the three editors approach the work
| Editor | What it emphasizes | Best reason to choose it | Main trade-off to check |
|---|---|---|---|
| VS Code | A mature, customizable editor with a large extension marketplace, debugging and remote-development tooling, documentation, community, and Copilot integration, as described by Zed Industries. | Your team has standardized on it, or a specific extension or customization is essential. | Its established flexibility may also mean more setup and interface surface than you want. |
| Cursor | An AI-forward editor based on the VS Code experience, with project-wide context and multi-file editing described by Zed Industries. | You want AI prominent in the workflow without abandoning much of the familiar VS Code interface and conventions. | Confirm that its AI workflow suits your review habits; feature descriptions do not demonstrate model quality or dependable results. |
| Zed | A native editor that integrates AI, collaboration, and developer-control features into the application, according to Zed Industries. | You value a focused-feeling editing experience and are willing to verify that its separate extension ecosystem covers your needs. | It does not directly run VS Code extensions, and its extension ecosystem is smaller. |
The descriptions in this table come from Zed Industries’ VS Code comparison and Cursor comparison, so they are vendor framing, not independent product reviews.

Why Zed won for me—and why that may not transfer
My choice came down to the feeling of staying with the code rather than managing the editor around it. Zed was the one I ended the month preferring when I wanted the editor itself to recede. That is the honest scope of the result: a personal impression from a month, not a claim that Zed is objectively faster, better for every language, or universally less distracting.
The comparison material does not document the specific interruptions, setup steps, or workload behind my month, so I can’t responsibly turn that preference into a detailed story about a particular extension, language, or AI task. If you make the same decision, notice the concrete moments that matter in your work: an extension you cannot replace, a team setting you must reproduce, or an AI change that takes too long to review.

Will your extensions and team workflow carry over?
This is the most practical switching risk. Zed has its own extension system and does not directly support VS Code extensions. Zed Industries says common capabilities such as Git and language-server support are built in, but that does not mean every extension you rely on has an equivalent. Compatible keybindings can ease the muscle-memory change; they do not provide extension compatibility.
- List the extensions you use on real projects, then identify which are essential rather than merely convenient.
- Check whether Zed’s built-in features or its own extensions cover the essential jobs; verify each specific tool before switching.
- Ask whether your team depends on shared settings, debugging, remote development, or a standard editor configuration.
- Keep VS Code as the practical default if a required extension, team standard, or customization cannot move with you.
Zed’s own comparison with VS Code explicitly presents VS Code as the stronger fit for users who need particular extensions, extensive customization, or a team-standard environment. That is a useful warning even though the recommendation comes from a competing editor’s vendor page.

Is Zed a replacement for Cursor’s AI workflow?
Both editors describe substantial AI-assisted editing, but a feature list cannot tell you which model will give better answers on your code or how often you will accept its changes. Zed Industries describes Cursor in terms of project-wide context and multi-file refactoring. It describes Zed as supporting multi-file edits, background agents, editable diff review, MCP tool use, and external agent integrations through ACP.
For a real decision, focus on the review loop: can you see what changed, understand the scope, and reject or adjust the result without losing control of the project? Zed’s comparison describes editable diff review and agent features; Cursor’s describes project-wide context and multi-file work. Those are vendor-described capabilities, not evidence that the tools are equivalent or that either will reliably make correct changes. Try your own representative task and inspect every diff.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
Cursor’s VS Code-based approach may be the more natural transition if you want AI at the center but prefer familiar editor conventions. Zed may suit you if its integrated editing and agent workflow feels less intrusive. If the AI suggestions themselves are the deciding factor, evaluate them on the same task and model configuration rather than inferring quality from the product descriptions.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Does Zed’s performance claim explain the feeling?
Zed Industries’ 2026 VS Code comparison page publishes the figures “<1s startup, <10ms typing latency, ~600MB RAM” for Zed. These are company-published comparison figures, not independent benchmark results, and the page does not make them universal measurements for every machine or project. I did not record a controlled startup, latency, or memory test during my month, so those numbers should not be read as results from my experience.

A benchmark and a feeling answer different questions. Startup time, typing response, and memory can matter, especially in large projects or on constrained hardware, but your own extensions, workspace, and computer shape the result. If performance is the reason you are considering a switch, measure the same project and tasks on your own setup rather than relying on a vendor comparison alone.
What to know about privacy and collaboration
AI data handling
Zed’s privacy page says diagnostic and usage telemetry can be turned off. It also says prompts and code are discarded after each AI request and are not used to train models, while describing provider agreements with zero-retention terms and a short-term retention exception for certain provider-designated models used for safety. These are Zed’s stated policies; they do not mean every AI interaction in every editor stays local. Check the terms for the model and provider you actually use.
Shared editing
Zed Industries describes real-time multiplayer editing, cursor sharing, and voice chat as Zed capabilities. Those features may be valuable when live collaboration is part of the work, but their availability alone is not a reason to switch if your team already collaborates effectively another way.
Who should choose each editor?
- Choose VS Code if a must-have extension, established team setup, remote-development workflow, debugging tool, or deep customization makes compatibility more important than a fresh interface.
- Choose Cursor if you want AI-forward editing and project-wide assistance while staying close to the VS Code experience.
- Choose Zed if its focused feel appeals to you, its built-in tools and extension ecosystem cover your actual needs, and its AI and collaboration options fit how you work.
How to switch without disrupting a project
- Audit before installing: write down the extensions, language tools, keybindings, team settings, and debugging or remote workflows you cannot lose.
- Verify specific replacements: check Zed’s extension system and built-in features against that list. Do not assume a familiar shortcut means a VS Code extension will run.
- Try a non-critical project: open a real project that exercises your ordinary editing, navigation, Git, and language-tool needs without making the new editor your only option.
- Test AI changes cautiously: use a representative task, inspect the complete diff, and confirm the result yourself before relying on it.
- Keep your existing setup available: switch your primary workflow only after the trial exposes no blocker that matters to your team or project.
Zed’s FAQ lists macOS, Linux, and Windows support and Stable and Preview release channels; it also describes the editor as free and open source, with separate documentation and pricing for Zed Pro plans. Because operating-system support and plan details can change, check the current Zed FAQ before making an operational decision.
