Yes—ONLYOFFICE can replace the everyday Word, Excel and PowerPoint work of Microsoft 365 for many Windows users. In a 30-day personal switch, XDA Developers writer Yash Patel found that routine documents, spreadsheets and presentations transferred smoothly enough for his needs. The one persistent disadvantage was not a missing command: Microsoft Word felt more polished for writing, particularly in long or formatting-heavy documents.
That is a useful result, but it is not an enterprise migration verdict or a file-compatibility benchmark. Your decision should depend on how your own DOCX, XLSX and PPTX files survive a round trip, and on whether you rely on Microsoft’s cloud services as much as its desktop apps.

What the 30-day switch actually found
Patel replaced Microsoft 365 with ONLYOFFICE on a Windows PC and used it as part of his normal routine. He reported that ordinary spreadsheet and presentation work moved over with little friction. Everyday document editing was also workable, but writing felt less refined than in Word. His summary was: “OnlyOffice does the job, and I’m getting used to the small differences.” He also wrote that “Word still felt more polished.” Those are first-person observations from one month of use, not controlled testing across industries or document types. What ONLYOFFICE Desktop Editors replaces
ONLYOFFICE Desktop Editors is an open-source office suite distributed under the AGPL v3 license. Its desktop applications can edit local files without a constant internet connection. Windows, macOS and Linux builds are available. The download page displayed Windows version 9.4.0 builds released May 19, 2026 when checked; desktop version numbers change, so verify the current build before installing. Check the current downloads.
Where the replacement is strongest
- Routine letters, reports and other standard documents.
- Normal calculations, tables and charts in spreadsheets.
- Typical slide decks and presentations.
- Local editing when you need to work without an internet connection.
- Opening and saving the common Office Open XML formats used by Microsoft applications.
Where the claim stops
A desktop editor is not the whole Microsoft 365 service. OneDrive storage, Outlook, Teams, tenant administration and cloud-based collaboration require separate decisions. ONLYOFFICE can be paired with its own cloud, DocSpace or self-hosted integrations, but those options were not comprehensively tested in Patel’s month. Will your Office files keep their formatting?
Format compatibility is a property of a particular file, not a promise that every document will look identical. A simple DOCX or XLSX may round-trip cleanly while a document built around tracked changes, unusual fonts, section breaks, floating objects, advanced formulas or linked data may not. No compatibility percentage or independent fidelity benchmark was established by this trial.
A practical round-trip test
- Collect representative copies. Include your longest document, a heavily formatted report, a workbook with complex formulas and a presentation with charts, images and custom layouts.
- Open the copies in ONLYOFFICE Desktop Editors. Record any warnings, missing fonts, changed page breaks or altered formulas before editing.
- Make realistic edits. Add comments, use tracked changes if your workflow needs them, change formulas and move slide elements rather than merely opening and closing files.
- Save in the original format. Reopen the saved DOCX, XLSX or PPTX in the Microsoft application used by your recipients and compare pagination, formulas, charts, comments and review history.
- Repeat the round trip. Save back and forth more than once. Problems that do not appear on the first save can emerge after later edits.
- Test the hand-off. Send a sample to the people or systems that consume it, including printers, document-management systems and shared folders.
What you miss when leaving Microsoft 365
The month-long account points to a gradual loss of convenience rather than one irreplaceable feature. Word’s mature writing experience—especially when a document becomes long, style-heavy or formatting-sensitive—was the notable gap for Patel. Your own missing pieces may instead be outside the editors: a OneDrive-centered filing system, Outlook mail and calendar, Teams meetings, organization-wide identity controls or established co-authoring habits.

That distinction matters when calculating the switch. Replacing three desktop editors is straightforward; replacing a service bundle requires a plan for storage, sharing, accounts, permissions, backup and support.

- Choose a desktop-only trial if you mainly create local documents and value offline access or open-source licensing.
- Keep Microsoft 365 for specific workloads if your important files rely on Word’s advanced review and layout behavior or on Microsoft cloud services that your team already uses.
- Evaluate a broader ONLYOFFICE deployment only after testing its cloud, DocSpace or self-hosted collaboration path against your storage, authentication and compliance requirements.
Install the current desktop build, run the round-trip test on copies and involve the people who receive your files. If those files remain stable and your team does not need the Microsoft service layer, ONLYOFFICE can cover the core office tasks. If writing polish or cloud integration is central, a partial switch may be more sensible than an all-or-nothing replacement.
