A pull request opened on October 2, 2026 proposes Budgie 10.10.3 with its applications, dependencies, branding and aerynOS integration. The package work was still under review, and aerynOS has published no availability date.
What is happening with Budgie on aerynOS?
Joshua Strobl opened a pull request to add Budgie Desktop 10.10.3 to aerynOS. The proposal covers a complete desktop setup rather than just the Budgie shell: it includes the main desktop package, recommended applications, required dependencies, distribution branding and a patched Budgie Control Center for aerynOS.

That distinction matters. Packaging and testing show active development, but they do not mean Budgie has been merged into a stable aerynOS release or added as an installer selection.

Which Budgie version is proposed?
The target is Budgie 10.10.3, released on September 27, 2026. This release includes favorites in Budgie Menu, the restored Keyboard Layout applet, primary-monitor selection, freely placed desktop icons and improved labwc integration.
Budgie 10.10 is the project’s first Wayland-only release series. It is now in maintenance mode while the developers work on Budgie 11, so an aerynOS package based on 10.10.3 would represent the current maintained Budgie 10 line rather than the upcoming major rewrite.

Will aerynOS Budgie use Wayland or X11?
The proposed session is Wayland-based and is intended to use labwc as its compositor. That matches Budgie 10.10’s migration away from X11 and aerynOS’s own Wayland-only desktop direction, which provides no X11 session.
The exact defaults will still depend on the package work being reviewed. The available information establishes the intended stack, not a guarantee that every setting will ship unchanged.

What is labwc’s role?
Labwc is the Wayland compositor planned for the aerynOS Budgie session. In practical terms, it supplies the window-management and display-compositing layer beneath the Budgie desktop while Budgie provides the desktop shell, panels, menu, settings and related user-facing components.
Because Budgie 10.10 is designed around Wayland and includes labwc integration improvements, this pairing follows the direction of both projects instead of adding an X11 compatibility session.

What users can reasonably expect from the package
- A Budgie 10.10.3 desktop session integrated into aerynOS packaging.
- A recommended set of Budgie applications rather than a shell-only installation.
- Dependencies needed for the session to operate.
- aerynOS-specific branding based on a generic Budgie defaults template.
- A patched Budgie Control Center that supports the distribution’s branding.
- A Wayland session using labwc as the intended compositor.
These are the contents described by the proposal and packaging updates. They should not be read as a promise of a final installer layout or a particular default configuration until the work is merged and released.
Why the timing is significant for Budgie
Budgie 10 remains in maintenance while Buddies of Budgie develops Budgie 11, a ground-up reimplementation using Qt6 and C++ with a modular core and presentation layers. A proposed aerynOS package built on 10.10.3 therefore brings the current Wayland generation to the distribution while the next major architecture is being developed.

Budgie has been independent of Solus since January 1, 2022 and is maintained by Buddies of Budgie. The aerynOS work is consequently an integration effort between the distribution and the independent Budgie project, not a return of Budgie to Solus control.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. When will Budgie be available in aerynOS?
No ETA is available. The September 23 aerynOS update explicitly said the work was not ready for inclusion and that the project does not provide ETAs. The October 2 pull request was still under review.
Until that review is completed and a package reaches an aerynOS release channel, users should treat Budgie support as forthcoming rather than available. Installing or testing an unstable package, if one is exposed by the project, would not be the same as receiving an officially shipped desktop option.
What this does—and does not—establish
| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| Is Budgie coming to aerynOS? | It is being prepared and tested as a proposed option, but release approval is not confirmed. |
| Which version is targeted? | Budgie 10.10.3. |
| Will it use Wayland? | Yes, the intended session is Wayland-only. |
| Which compositor is planned? | Labwc. |
| Is there an X11 session? | No. aerynOS describes its desktop direction as Wayland-only, and Budgie 10.10 is a Wayland-only series. |
| Is a release date known? | No. Neither a confirmed merged package nor an ETA is established. |
| Are performance advantages proven? | No comparable benchmark or independent performance measurement has been published for this integration. |
Bottom line for aerynOS users
The Budgie proposal is substantial: it covers the desktop, applications, dependencies, branding and control-center integration, with Budgie 10.10.3 running on the labwc Wayland compositor. However, it remains a reviewed packaging effort as of October 3, 2026. Users should wait for an official aerynOS announcement or release-channel package before treating Budgie as a supported desktop choice.
