Aerospace and automotive manufacturing do not use a single common scale of “strictness.” In U.S. civil aviation, an FAA production certificate is a regulatory authorization to make duplicate products under an FAA-approved type design. In automotive supply, IATF 16949:2016 is a quality-management-system standard used with each customer’s additional requirements. Those approvals serve different purposes, so neither certificate can be treated as the equivalent of the other.
Tolerances are also feature-specific. A drawing, function, manufacturing process, measurement method, uncertainty and acceptance rule determine whether a part is acceptable. The available official material does not establish one aerospace tolerance range and one automotive range, so claims that aerospace parts are universally “ten times more precise” are not defensible. A useful comparison examines how each program controls design conformity, variation, suppliers, inspection evidence and changes.

What certification means in each sector
FAA production approval is tied to an aircraft design
The Federal Aviation Administration defines a production certificate as “an approval (document) to manufacture duplicate products under an FAA-approved type design (e.g., type certificate or supplemental type certificate).” The FAA Production Certificates page was last updated April 3, 2025. The approval is therefore linked to a particular approved aircraft design, not merely to a company’s general claim that it operates a quality system.
Recommended Free Tools
For a U.S. civil-aircraft production certificate, the FAA evaluates the applicant’s quality system, organization and facilities under 14 CFR Part 21, Subpart G. The agency’s process also examines approved quality-system data and design data, and whether the manufacturer can repeatedly produce products that conform to the approved design. Regulatory surveillance and conformity evidence are part of the approval context.

Other FAA production approvals cover different article types
“FAA production approval” is a family of pathways rather than one certificate that covers every article. A Parts Manufacturer Approval (PMA) covers eligible modification and replacement articles. A Technical Standard Order Authorization (TSOA) applies to eligible articles that meet an FAA minimum performance standard. A production certificate, PMA and TSOA should be named separately in a supplier’s scope because they establish different design and eligibility relationships.
IATF 16949 is an automotive quality-management standard
IATF 16949:2016 specifies quality-management-system requirements for organizations making automotive production parts, service parts and accessory parts. It is used together with applicable customer-specific requirements rather than as a stand-alone product approval. A certificate indicates that an organization’s management system has been assessed against the standard and relevant certification rules; it does not by itself approve every component design or authorize a vehicle to enter service.
The International Automotive Task Force says it cooperates with ISO and has begun a revision process for IATF 16949:2016. Edition status, sanctioned interpretations and transition rules can change, so a supplier and customer should verify the current requirements before a contract, audit or certification transition.

The FAA pathway is a regulator’s authorization connected to an approved aircraft type design and production conformity. IATF 16949 is a harmonized automotive QMS framework that is supplemented by requirements from a vehicle manufacturer or other customer. One is not a higher grade of the other. An aircraft supplier may hold an aviation approval and an aerospace QMS certificate, while an automotive supplier may hold IATF certification and several customer-specific approvals; the documents answer different questions.
AS9100 can appear in aerospace quality-system discussions. The FAA lists AS9100 among standards recognized in a distributor-accreditation context, but an AS9100 certificate should not be described as a substitute for an FAA production certificate. The relevant FAA approval, article, design data and scope still have to be identified.

Are aerospace tolerances tighter than automotive tolerances?
A tolerance belongs to a feature, not an industry
A tolerance limits the permitted variation of a defined characteristic: for example, a dimension, geometric relationship, surface condition or performance value on a particular drawing. Its suitability depends on the feature’s function, loads, interfaces, process capability and verification method. A vehicle body panel, a fuel-system fitting, an aircraft bracket and an electronic module can all have very different requirements within their own sectors.
The FAA and IATF materials establish approval and quality-system mechanisms; they do not publish a universal aerospace band that can be compared with a universal automotive band. Without the two drawings, datum scheme, process, inspection equipment, uncertainty and acceptance criteria, “more precise” has no measurable meaning.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems| Comparison question | What must be identified | Why a sector label is insufficient |
|---|---|---|
| Which characteristic is controlled? | The exact dimension, geometric feature, material or performance requirement | Different features on the same part can have different limits. |
| What are the limits? | Drawing tolerance, specification range or functional acceptance limit | There is no single tolerance range for all aerospace or all automotive products. |
| How is it measured? | Instrument, fixture, coordinate system, calibration status and method | A reported value is meaningful only in relation to its measurement system. |
| What uncertainty is acceptable? | Measurement uncertainty or the decision rule used at the acceptance boundary | A nominal reading without uncertainty can misclassify a part. |
| Who sets the requirement? | Approved aircraft design data, vehicle-maker specification or other customer requirement | Regulator and customer obligations differ by program. |
What a defensible precision comparison looks like
Choose one defined feature on two named programs, reproduce the applicable drawing limits, and explain the inspection method. Report whether the limits are bilateral or unilateral, how datums are established, and whether the result is a capability study, a routine inspection or a final acceptance check. State the production period and program scope. This approach can show that one feature has a narrower or more demanding requirement without implying that an entire industry is uniformly tighter.
How production control differs in practice
Aircraft production emphasizes approved-design conformity
The FAA production-certificate process audits the applicant’s quality system, organization, production facility and approved quality-system and design data. The central question is whether the facility can manufacture consistently in conformity with the approved type design. Deviations, design changes and production changes must be handled within the applicable approval and conformity system rather than treated as informal shop-floor decisions.
For a buyer, useful evidence includes the exact FAA approval and its limitations, the controlled design-data revision, manufacturing-site scope, records showing conformity, and the procedure used when a nonconforming article or a proposed change is found. The approval applies to the products and design relationship named in the authorization; it should not be generalized to every product made by the company.

Automotive production emphasizes a common QMS plus customer rules
IATF 16949 provides common requirements for automotive organizations across the supply chain. Its framework includes process and product audits, measurement-system analysis, calibration or verification records, manufacturing-process monitoring and product approval activities. Vehicle manufacturers and other customers can add customer-specific requirements, so two suppliers with IATF certificates may still face different audit formats, reporting duties, approval gates and performance targets.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Automotive controls are therefore evaluated through the organization’s managed processes and their evidence: defined process controls, monitored characteristics, measurement studies, audit results, approval records and responses to variation. The certificate does not eliminate the need to read the customer’s purchase specification, quality manual and change-notification rules.
Variation is managed with data in both sectors
ISO describes statistical process control as the use of data and statistical techniques to monitor production performance and detect variation that could create defects. SPC is a method, not proof that one sector has tighter tolerances. A process can be statistically stable and still be centered outside a customer’s limits; conversely, a wide requirement can be difficult to control if the process is unstable.
Measurement-system analysis asks whether the instrument, fixture, operator method and environment are capable of distinguishing acceptable from unacceptable product. Calibration or verification records show that equipment is maintained against a reference, but calibration alone does not demonstrate that the method has enough resolution or uncertainty for a particular feature.
Supplier and customer requirements add another layer
In aviation, the approved design and FAA oversight establish the regulatory baseline, while contracts and approved supplier arrangements add operational requirements. In automotive, IATF 16949 is expressly used with customer-specific requirements. A meaningful comparison must therefore list the actual customer documents, revision levels, special-process controls, reporting channels and escalation rules for the programs being compared.

Change control and traceability should be checked, not assumed
Ask how each program records design and process changes, links material and inspection records to a lot or serial number when required, evaluates the effect of a supplier change, and authorizes disposition of nonconforming product. The governing framework may require different records or approvals, and a company’s certificate does not reveal every program-specific control. Request the procedure and a representative record rather than inferring capability from a logo or certificate number.

How to compare two real manufacturing programs
Use the following procedure when evaluating a supplier, writing a sourcing specification or explaining a difference between an aircraft and vehicle part.
- Name the exact products and sites. Record the aircraft or vehicle program, component number, manufacturing location, production period and revision of the governing specification. Avoid comparing “aerospace” with “automotive” as if each were one product.
- Identify the approval basis. For the aircraft item, determine whether the authorization is a production certificate, PMA, TSOA or another stated approval and identify the associated design data. For the automotive item, record the IATF certificate scope and every applicable customer-specific requirement.
- Map the critical characteristics. List the dimensions, geometric controls, materials and performance requirements that affect fit, function, safety or interchangeability. Attach each requirement to its drawing or specification source.
- Define the measurement decision. Specify the instrument or fixture, datum setup, calibration or verification status, environmental conditions, sampling plan, uncertainty treatment and acceptance rule. Do not compare a laboratory result with a shop-floor check without explaining the difference.
- Review process controls. Examine how the plant monitors process variables, reacts to trends, performs measurement-system analysis, conducts process or product audits and approves product. Ask which records are retained and who may release or disposition product.
- Trace changes and suppliers. Follow one change from proposal through technical review, customer or regulator notification where required, implementation and verification. Check how outsourced processes and incoming material are controlled.
- Compare outcomes only within the same basis. If capability, defect or volume data are available, state the sampling period, feature, measurement method and program scope. Do not turn a plant-specific result into a sector-wide statistic.
Inspection equipment: where a digital caliper fits
A digital caliper can be useful for introductory or rough dimensional checks, especially when a drawing’s requirement is comfortably wider than the instrument’s demonstrated uncertainty. It is not automatically suitable for accepting an aerospace component, an automotive safety part or any production feature. The cited quality-system material supports controlling measurement systems; it does not establish that a consumer caliper meets any particular tolerance.
For production acceptance, select equipment and fixturing whose resolution, repeatability, reproducibility, calibration and uncertainty are appropriate to the feature and decision rule. A coordinate-measuring machine, gauge, optical system, height gauge or specialized functional fixture may be appropriate depending on geometry. The correct choice follows from the drawing and risk, not from the industry label.

Scale, cadence and economics: what can and cannot be generalized
Aircraft and vehicle programs can have very different production cadences, batch sizes, supplier networks and change frequencies, but no directly comparable sector-wide annual-volume figure is established here. A high-volume automotive line and a low-rate aircraft line should not be represented by one “typical” number for their industries.

When scale matters, compare named programs and state the period. Useful fields include planned and actual units per period, takt or build cadence, number of variants, batch size, line-change frequency, supplier count and inspection sampling. Explain whether the figure covers a single plant, an entire program or a global manufacturer. This prevents a program-specific number from being mistaken for a universal production difference.
Geography and edition cautions
FAA scope is U.S.-specific
The FAA approval descriptions concern U.S. civil aviation. Other national aviation authorities may use different certificates, bilateral-agreement procedures or production-organization approvals. If a project is outside the FAA system, identify the responsible authority and do not assume that a U.S. production certificate is the controlling document.
Automotive requirements vary by customer and market
IATF 16949 is an international automotive framework, but customer-specific requirements, legal obligations and certification arrangements vary by vehicle maker, tier and geography. The supplier’s certificate scope and the customer’s current quality manual should be read together.

Check the current IATF transition status
Because IATF has announced a revision process for the 2016 standard, verify the current edition, sanctioned interpretations, certification rules and transition deadlines at the time of contracting or publication. A certificate issued against an older edition may have a different transition obligation from one issued after new rules take effect.
Common comparison mistakes and how to correct them
- Mistake: treating an IATF certificate as product approval. Correction: separate the organization’s QMS certification from the customer’s product and process approval.
- Mistake: calling aerospace tolerances universally tighter. Correction: compare a defined feature, drawing limit, process and measurement uncertainty.
- Mistake: using a certificate logo as evidence of every site’s capability. Correction: read the certificate scope, sites, exclusions and expiry, then review program records.
- Mistake: assuming calibration proves a measurement method is adequate. Correction: review measurement-system analysis, resolution, repeatability, reproducibility and the acceptance decision.
- Mistake: quoting one production-volume figure for an entire sector. Correction: identify the program, plant, dates and whether the value is planned, actual or cumulative.
- Mistake: ignoring customer-specific requirements. Correction: list the current customer documents and confirm how they interact with the general framework.
- Mistake: generalizing FAA procedures worldwide. Correction: name the authority and jurisdiction governing the aircraft program.
What to request from a supplier
A focused request for evidence is more informative than asking whether the supplier is “aerospace-grade” or “automotive-grade.” Request the following, tailored to the actual program:
- Certificate type, issuing body, scope, covered site and current status.
- Applicable aircraft approval and approved design basis, or the automotive customer-specific requirements and product-approval documents.
- Controlled drawing and specification revisions for the quoted component.
- Process-flow and control-plan information showing monitored characteristics and reaction plans.
- Measurement-system analysis, calibration or verification records and the decision rule for acceptance.
- Representative process and product audit results, nonconformance records and corrective-action evidence.
- Change-control procedure, notification thresholds and records for outsourced or special processes.
- Traceability information appropriate to the contract, such as lot, batch, serial or material records.
- Production-volume and cadence data identified by program, site and time period if scale is part of the decision.
A practical decision rule
Use the FAA document when the question is whether a U.S. civil-aircraft manufacturer is authorized to produce duplicate articles under an approved aircraft design. Use IATF 16949 when the question is whether an automotive organization’s quality-management system meets the automotive framework together with its customer requirements. Use the drawing, process and measurement evidence—not the sector name—to decide whether a particular feature is sufficiently controlled.
That distinction keeps certification, tolerance and production comparisons technically honest. It also gives engineers, buyers and readers a repeatable way to compare two real programs without inventing a universal aerospace-versus-automotive ranking.
