Choose an Aeroplan credit card if you regularly fly Air Canada, can use Aeroplan flight rewards and will get real value from its airline benefits. Choose a flexible travel rewards card if you want more ways to redeem points and prefer to decide later whether to transfer them to Aeroplan or another program. To find which fits your spending, compare the rewards and benefits you would actually use against the card’s annual fee—and test the result against a real trip.

What each type of card is designed to do

Aeroplan credit cards

An Aeroplan co-branded card earns Aeroplan points directly. That makes it a focused choice if you already redeem through Aeroplan, but the usefulness of those points depends on your routes, dates, award-seat availability and the program’s pricing. Air Canada’s Aeroplan credit card overview highlights benefits such as a free first checked bag, preferred pricing and a 15% discount on eligible Air Canada flight rewards for cardholders, subject to the selected card’s terms. Not every benefit applies to every card. The overview also lists non-flight options, including hotels, car rentals and gift cards; check the redemption terms rather than assuming those options offer the same value as flights.

Flexible travel rewards cards

A flexible-points card earns a currency that may be redeemable through the card issuer’s travel options or transferable to participating loyalty programs. That keeps more choices open while the points remain in the card program. For example, American Express Canada says Membership Rewards can be used for travel and transferred to participating programs; the Cobalt benefits page describes transfers to multiple loyalty programs. Other flexible-points cards can have different partners, rates, fees and redemption rules, so treat Cobalt as an example, not a stand-in for the whole category.

Compare how your spending earns points

Use the rates and category definitions for the exact cards you are considering. A higher earn rate matters only on spending that qualifies for it, and caps can change the result.

One current example is the TD Aeroplan Visa Infinite. TD lists 1.5 Aeroplan points per dollar on eligible gas, electric-vehicle charging, grocery and direct Air Canada purchases, up to an annual cap of $80,000 in those eligible purchases, then 1 point per dollar on other purchases. TD’s comparison page lists a $139 annual fee. Its rates and features are effective September 1, 2026 unless otherwise indicated, and are subject to change; issuer terms and category definitions apply. See TD’s Aeroplan Visa Infinite terms for current details.

For a useful estimate, list your actual annual spend in the categories that matter to each card—such as groceries, gas, EV charging, dining, direct Air Canada purchases and general purchases. Apply each card’s current rate only to eligible transactions, account for caps, then subtract the annual fee. Add a benefit only if you expect to use it: a checked-bag perk, for example, has little value if you rarely check a bag or already receive that benefit another way.

Check whether Aeroplan awards work for your trips

Aeroplan flight rewards are not priced at one fixed rate. The official June 2026 Air Canada Flight Rewards Chart organizes one-way pricing by zone, flown distance and carrier. It warns that starting prices are not guaranteed, award seats depend on availability, taxes or third-party charges may apply, and partner bookings may have a fee. A route that looks attractive on a chart may not have seats on the dates you can travel.

Before you value points, search for an itinerary you would actually book. Use the same dates and route to compare the cash fare with the award price, taxes and fees, and confirm that seats are available. If you estimate a redemption value, make the method explicit—for example, subtract award taxes and fees from the comparable cash fare, then divide by the points required. That is an estimate for that itinerary, not a universal cash value for Aeroplan points. The chart’s median figures, where shown, reflect member redemptions from January 2025 through December 2026 and are estimates, not guaranteed prices.

Understand the flexibility—and the transfer risk

Flexible points can preserve options: American Express Canada’s current transfer-partner information lists 1,000 Membership Rewards points converting to 1,000 Aeroplan points, with a 1,000-point minimum, alongside other partners such as British Airways Avios, Cathay Pacific Asia Miles and Flying Blue at their listed ratios. Partner participation, ratios, minimums and processing times can change; verify them before acting. See American Express Canada’s transfer-partner information.

That flexibility ends for points you transfer. American Express says transfers are final and transferred points cannot be returned. Search the award, check its price and availability, and review the transfer terms before moving points. If you want to use points without transferring them, Amex also lists options such as travel bookings through Amex Travel, travel credits and an Air Canada Pay with Points option. Redemption rates depend on the method; do not assume these options produce the same value as a partner award. Details are on the Membership Rewards redemption page.

Which card type fits your spending?

If this describes you What to consider
You fly Air Canada and can use Aeroplan awards on routes and dates that suit you. An Aeroplan card may fit, especially if its checked-bag, preferred-pricing or eligible flight-reward benefits are useful to you. Confirm the selected card’s terms.
You want to keep several redemption options open. A flexible-points card may suit you, provided its partners and issuer travel options match your plans. Compare the exact card’s rates, fees and redemption rules.
Your spending is concentrated in categories rewarded by a particular card. Estimate points from your own eligible transactions, applying category definitions and caps. Do not compare headline earn rates without considering where you spend.
You are unsure whether an Aeroplan award will work for your travel dates. Flexible points let you delay a transfer decision. Check real award availability before transferring, since a transfer may be irreversible.
Your usual merchants do not accept the card’s payment network. Include acceptance in the comparison: a strong earn rate cannot help on purchases you cannot make with the card.

A practical way to make the decision

  1. Choose two specific cards. Compare current issuer terms for one Aeroplan card and one flexible-points card available to you in Canada. Treat welcome offers as temporary and separate from ongoing earn rates.
  2. Map a year of spending. Use your real category totals and the cards’ current eligible-purchase definitions, earn rates and caps.
  3. Subtract costs and count usable benefits. Deduct annual fees and include only benefits you expect to use. Check whether you already receive a benefit elsewhere.
  4. Test a real redemption. Compare cash and award options for a trip you would take, on the same dates, including taxes, third-party charges, partner booking fees and seat availability where applicable.
  5. Keep transfer points uncommitted until ready. If considering a transfer, confirm the award and current partner terms first. Once transferred, those points may be governed by the loyalty program and may not be reversible.
