Aerogel usually delivers more thermal resistance in less thickness, while foam insulation is generally easier to source, install and justify on cost. There is no universal acoustic winner: sound absorption, airborne transmission loss and vibration isolation are different measurements, and results depend on density, thickness, frequency and the complete wall, roof or pipe assembly.
Use aerogel when every millimetre matters and the product’s tested performance supports its price. Use a specified foam—EPS, XPS, polyurethane or polyisocyanurate—when you need a conventional, economical insulation system. For noise control, select the assembly and acoustic metric first, then choose the material.

Quick comparison
| Question | Aerogel | Foam insulation |
|---|---|---|
| Thermal resistance per unit thickness | Usually higher. A U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) project description characterizes aerogels as providing R-value per inch of 10 or higher, but that is a broad description rather than a guarantee for every blanket or board. DOE, 2021 | Varies substantially by chemistry and product. EPS, XPS, polyurethane and polyisocyanurate are not interchangeable materials. |
| Acoustic performance | Can be strong in a particular laboratory test, but published studies use different specimens and metrics. No universal building-assembly winner is established. | Some foams absorb sound effectively; rigid foams may provide little absorption by themselves. Transmission loss depends on the whole construction. |
| Thickness where space is tight | Often advantageous because of low conductivity. | May require more depth for the same target resistance, depending on the foam. |
| Cost and availability | Higher manufacturing cost and limited availability remain adoption barriers. | Common products and installation practices generally make budgeting simpler, but price still varies by chemistry, thickness and region. |
The correct comparison is therefore not “aerogel versus foam” in the abstract. It is a product-specific comparison at a stated thickness, temperature, moisture condition and installation configuration.

What thermal performance numbers actually mean
Conductivity is the material-level starting point
Thermal conductivity (usually written as k or lambda) describes how readily heat moves through a material. Lower conductivity means less heat flow through a given thickness. Thermal resistance rises with thickness and falls as conductivity rises, so a thin, very-low-conductivity layer can equal the resistance of a much thicker conventional layer.

Aerogel Technologies lists indicative conductivity ranges of 10–20 mW/m·K for a silica aerogel monolith at about 100 mg/cc, 14–21 mW/m·K for its Spaceloft composite blanket examples, and 29–35 mW/m·K for typical polyurethane foam or expanded-polystyrene examples. The company notes that composition, form, density and environment change the result; treat these as indicative ranges, not a substitute for the datasheet of the grade you are buying. The DOE’s “Optimization of Very Low Thermal Conductivity Material” project describes the development of materials intended to reduce heat flow further. It is a research and development project, not a rating for a finished residential product. DOE, 2017
R-value claims need a qualification
The DOE’s 2021 description of low-cost, high-R aerogel work says aerogels have an R-value per inch of 10 or higher. That figure is a broad project-page characterization. Actual listed R-value depends on the specific blanket or board, mean test temperature, thickness, compression, facings and aging. A product label or independent test report should control your design. DOE, 2021
Foam labels also need context. A nominal board value can be reduced by joints, fasteners, framing, thermal bridges, facer damage, air leakage or moisture. Compare declared or measured resistance at the thickness and temperature that match your application, rather than comparing a marketing number from one material with a laboratory value from another.
Why a laboratory sample is not a wall rating
A 2026 DOE peer-review page reports an Oak Ridge National Laboratory verification table for particular aerogel-impregnated polyurethane pipe and duct specimens. The bare and aerogel-containing samples have different measured conductivities, but those specimens do not constitute a general test of a framed wall or a commercial aerogel blanket. Similarly, the 2013 DOE Building America cold-climate enclosure report models retrofit options including injected polyurethane foam and aerogel. It notes limited literature data and approximate extrapolation for shredded aerogel. Use those results to understand a scenario, not to claim that every aerogel or foam product will perform identically. Cold Climate Building Enclosure Solutions
“Foam” covers several different insulations
Calling all foam “foam insulation” hides the variables that determine heat flow, moisture behavior, strength and sound response. Ask for the exact chemistry, density, blowing-agent formulation, facer and installation method.
Expanded polystyrene (EPS)
EPS is a bead-based rigid foam commonly supplied as boards or molded shapes. Its conductivity and moisture response depend on density and product construction. Treat an EPS board as its own tested product, not as a proxy for polyurethane or XPS.
Extruded polystyrene (XPS)
XPS is a closed-cell board with a different manufacturing process and performance profile from EPS. Thickness, edge joints, facer details and exposure conditions still affect the assembly result.
Polyurethane foam
Polyurethane appears in sprayed, injected and rigid-board forms. The substrate, mix quality, cure, thickness uniformity and installation access can matter as much as the nominal chemistry. The DOE’s pipe-and-duct verification work is an example of why application-specific testing matters. DOE/ORNL peer review

Polyisocyanurate
Polyisocyanurate is a distinct rigid-foam family often used where high resistance per thickness is needed. The DOE’s SIAP project examines isocyanurate-based super-insulation at atmospheric pressure; that project should not be read as a universal rating for every polyisocyanurate board. DOE SIAP project

Acoustic performance: three different questions
Sound absorption
Absorption reduces reflected sound inside a room. Porous, fibrous or open-cell materials can convert some acoustic energy into heat. A material that absorbs echoes may do little to stop a neighbor’s voice from passing through a wall.
Airborne sound transmission loss
Transmission loss measures how much sound a specimen blocks across a frequency range. Wall ratings such as STC apply to an entire tested assembly, including layers, studs, fasteners, seams and flanking paths—not to an insulation material in isolation.
Vibration isolation
Vibration isolation concerns structure-borne energy and dynamic stiffness. A material can perform well as a resilient isolator while offering modest airborne absorption, or the reverse.

What the aerogel acoustic studies show
The evidence points to promising but highly conditional results rather than a blanket victory.
| Study result | What was tested | How to use the result |
|---|---|---|
| Up to 40 dB/cm transmission loss, versus up to 5 dB for similar-density polyurethane acoustic foam | A 2023 review reports these maxima for monolithic polyurea aerogel at 0.45 g/cm³ and a similar-density polyurethane acoustic foam, in the studied range up to 5 kHz. | It is a specimen- and frequency-dependent comparison. It does not mean an aerogel blanket blocks eight times more sound in a finished wall. Advanced Engineering Materials review, 2023 |
| 10 dB transmission loss above 2,000 Hz; thermal conductivity 0.038 W m−1 K−1 | A 2024 study of a particular silica-aerogel composite. | The frequency limit and composite formulation are part of the result; it cannot be generalized to every aerogel product. RSC Advances, 2024 |
| Low resonance frequencies and distinctive dynamic-stiffness behavior | A 2024 vibration-isolation study covering commercial and research-stage aerogel blankets and boards, fumed-silica boards, polymer aerogels and nanofoams. | Useful for structure-borne vibration design, not a substitute for an airborne absorption or wall transmission-loss rating. The study also identifies compressibility, cost, availability and market acceptance as barriers. Construction and Building Materials, 2024 |
The cited literature does not provide a directly matched, installed wall or roof test comparing representative aerogel blanket and foam products for both heat and sound. Consequently, no responsible specification can name one material as the universal acoustic winner.
Where each material makes practical sense
Thin retrofit zones
Aerogel is most compelling when geometry is the constraint: a historic trim detail, a narrow reveal, a thin roof build-up or a pipe chase that cannot accept another several centimetres. Calculate the required resistance and verify that the aerogel product can be installed continuously without compression or gaps. A cheaper foam may still be the better choice if additional depth is available.
New walls and roofs with normal cavity depth
Specified foam boards or injected foams are often easier to source and detail at conventional thicknesses. Select the chemistry for the moisture, fire, structural and code conditions of the assembly, and address thermal bridges at studs, edges and penetrations. Do not assume that a higher material R-value automatically produces a higher whole-wall R-value.

Room echo and reverberation
If the goal is to reduce reflections inside a room, choose a product with absorption coefficients measured over the frequencies you care about. Rigid aerogel or closed-cell foam may not behave like an acoustic panel simply because it is porous at a microscopic scale. The mounting air gap, facing and exposed area can change absorption.

Blocking voices, traffic or equipment noise
Specify an assembly transmission-loss or STC target, then evaluate mass, airtightness, decoupling and flanking paths. Insulation inside a stud cavity is only one part of that system. A material-level dB/cm result cannot replace a tested wall, ceiling or enclosure rating.
Pipes and industrial equipment
The DOE’s industrial steam-distribution report describes flexible aerogel blankets for pipe applications, emphasizing thermal performance and hydrophobicity relative to traditional systems. Pipe geometry, operating temperature, weather exposure, jacketing and maintenance access make this a different design problem from a residential wall. DOE industrial steam-distribution report
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Cost, handling and risk trade-offs
DOE project descriptions identify aerogel material and manufacturing costs as barriers to broad building adoption. The premium can be rational where saved thickness prevents a larger redesign, protects usable floor area or solves a difficult thermal bridge. It is harder to justify where conventional foam can meet the target within the available depth. DOE, 2021
Budget the installed system, not only the material price. Include substrate preparation, cutting losses, seams, tapes or sealants, protective facings, labor, access equipment and any required finish or jacket. Confirm regional availability and lead time before committing to a specialty blanket.
For either material, obtain current documentation covering moisture exposure, water absorption, dimensional stability, fire classification, smoke development, service temperature, compression limits and compatibility with adhesives or membranes. Local code officials may require assembly listings rather than a material certificate.
A specification workflow that avoids apples-to-oranges comparisons
- Define the heat target. Set the required assembly U-value or R-value, climate design conditions and available thickness. Note whether the target is for a wall, roof, floor, pipe or duct.
- Define the sound target. Choose absorption, airborne transmission loss, STC or vibration isolation. Record the frequency range and whether the source is inside or outside the room.
- Short-list exact products. Name the aerogel blanket or board and the exact foam chemistry, density and facer. Eliminate generic “foam” entries from the comparison.
- Compare like-for-like thermal data. Use conductivity or resistance measured at comparable mean temperature, thickness and aging condition. Keep the test temperature beside every number.
- Model the assembly. Include framing, fasteners, joints, penetrations, air leakage, thermal bridges, facings and moisture. A continuous layer can outperform a higher-rated product that is interrupted repeatedly.
- Demand the right acoustic evidence. For room treatment, request absorption coefficients; for separation, request a tested assembly transmission-loss or STC report; for machinery, request dynamic stiffness and resonance data.
- Check compliance and installation. Confirm fire, moisture, service-temperature, compression and code requirements, then follow the manufacturer’s seam, support and protection details.
Common mistakes and how to correct them
- “Aerogel is always R-10 per inch.” Correction: treat the DOE figure as a broad project description and use the tested value for the specific product and condition.
- “Foam has one conductivity.” Correction: identify EPS, XPS, polyurethane or polyisocyanurate, then compare density, thickness and temperature on the product datasheet.
- “A high dB number proves a quiet wall.” Correction: check whether the number is absorption, specimen transmission loss or vibration isolation, and whether it covers the frequencies that matter.
- “More insulation fixes every noise path.” Correction: inspect airtightness, flanking, framing connections, doors, windows and mechanical penetrations; the assembly controls the result.
- “A pipe blanket and a wall blanket are interchangeable.” Correction: match the product to service temperature, geometry, jacketing, moisture exposure and maintenance requirements.
- “Nominal thickness equals installed thickness.” Correction: account for compression, uneven substrates, overlaps, cuts and gaps before calculating resistance.
Decision guide
| Your priority | Most defensible starting point | Evidence still required |
|---|---|---|
| Maximum thermal resistance in minimal depth | Evaluate an aerogel blanket or board first. | Product-specific conductivity or R-value, aging, compression and installed-joint details. |
| Lowest practical cost at conventional thickness | Compare the exact foam families that meet the thermal target. | Whole-assembly modeling, moisture and fire documentation, and installed labor. |
| Room echo control | Use an acoustic product selected by absorption coefficients and mounting arrangement. | Frequency-band data and exposed area; do not rely on thermal R-value. |
| Blocking airborne noise | Select a tested wall, roof or enclosure assembly. | Transmission-loss or STC data, airtightness and flanking control. |
| Vibration from equipment or structure | Evaluate resilient layers, including aerogel-based options where appropriate. | Dynamic stiffness, resonance, load and durability data for the operating conditions. |
In short, aerogel earns consideration when space is scarce or a specialized thermal problem justifies its premium. Foam remains a broad category of practical solutions, but only the named chemistry and tested assembly can answer a real design question. Acoustic performance must be specified by the sound problem and measurement method, not inferred from thermal conductivity.
