Short answer: Stripe is usually the quickest starting point for a developer-led product, Braintree is the strongest shortlist choice when PayPal and vaulted recurring payments are central, and Adyen is better suited to larger multinational or omnichannel merchants that need local payment methods, flexible settlement and negotiated pricing.
There is no universally cheapest option. Your effective cost depends on country, payment method, card type, currency conversion, refunds, disputes and contract terms—not just the headline percentage.

Stripe’s 2.9% + 30¢ figure is a US domestic-card rate published for 2026, not a worldwide price. Payment-method, cross-border, foreign-exchange and contract charges can change the result for any provider.
Which processor is cheapest?
The published information does not establish one global winner. Compare the complete cost of your own transaction mix rather than multiplying a single rate by revenue.

Adyen’s cost structure
Adyen states that each transaction has a fixed processing fee plus a fee determined by the payment method. It also states that there are no setup or monthly fees. Larger merchants may evaluate its Interchange++ option and negotiate economics around volume and method mix.
Braintree’s account-specific pricing
Braintree’s cited documentation does not provide one comparable worldwide card rate. Card pricing depends on the account and market, while PayPal transactions use PayPal merchant-account rates. Request a quote for every country and payment method you plan to support.
Stripe’s published US card rate
Stripe lists 2.9% + 30¢ for a successful domestic-card transaction in the US on its current standard pricing page, with custom pricing available. International cards, currency conversion, alternative methods, refunds and disputes can add different charges.

Build an effective-cost model
- Separate card-present and card-not-present volume.
- Break out domestic, cross-border and foreign-currency transactions.
- Use your actual average order value, because a fixed per-transaction fee weighs more heavily on small orders.
- Include refunds, chargebacks, fraud tools, payouts and any method-specific fees.
- Add engineering, maintenance and PCI-compliance work to the processor bill.
Payment methods and international coverage
Adyen for local-method coverage
Adyen supports cards, wallets, buy now, pay later, bank transfers and real-time payment methods. Availability is regional, so confirm that each method is enabled in the countries where you sell. Its enterprise orientation is useful when one reporting and settlement view must span online and in-person channels.
Braintree for PayPal-centered checkout
Braintree’s defining advantage is accepting PayPal and cards through one integration. Its other payment methods depend on your account and geography. Braintree’s PayPal documentation notes that its next-generation PayPal flows are US-only, so confirm product and country eligibility before designing around them.
Stripe for broad launch coverage
Stripe states support for more than 100 payment methods, over 135 currencies and 195 countries. Those figures describe the platform’s stated reach; the methods available to a particular business still depend on country, business type, account approval and customer location.

Subscriptions, vaulting and payment recovery
Adyen recurring payments
Adyen documents recurring payments and webhooks for payment-status and related activity. Your application must use those events to update subscription access, handle failures and record refunds or disputes.
Braintree Vault and subscriptions
Braintree’s documented recurring flow is explicit: create plans, store the customer and payment method in the Vault, then create a subscription. A stored method is encrypted by the gateway and linked to a unique token. The token can be used for recurring or one-time transactions, while CVV is not stored.

Stripe combines recurring billing and subscriptions with its payments stack. This can reduce the number of separate systems your team has to connect when the same account also handles one-time payments, invoices or platform payouts through Connect.
Rank #4
- USB interface, keyboard emulation, no need to install software to read, configuration software for changing settings available.
- Read data from all 3 tracks, high and low coercivity cards, ISO7811, AAMVA, CA DMV and most magnetic card data formats.
- Work on Windows, Mac and other USB capable systems. Work with TXT, notepad, Word, Excel, POS systems and son on.

Regardless of provider, model retries, failed-payment states, cancellation and grace periods, prorations, taxes, refunds, disputes and entitlement changes before launch. A successful charge alone is not a complete subscription workflow.

Use hosted components or tokenization
Hosted checkout, provider components and tokenization keep raw card data out of your servers and generally reduce the systems you must secure. They do not remove every compliance obligation; your PCI responsibilities depend on the exact flow, redirects, webhooks, server code and operational controls you deploy.
Adyen implementation choices
Adyen offers Drop-in, hosted/API and client-side options. A fully hosted or component-based flow can shorten the initial build, while a more customized API integration gives greater control and may require additional PCI documentation.
Best Value
- Pay one transparent rate per swipe for Visa, Mastercard, Discover and American Express.
- Works in conjunction with most downloadable Square point-of-sale apps on your device. Customers can pay, tip and sign directly on your device. Track payments in cash, gift cards and more. Also lets you send receipts via e-mail or text message, makes it easy to apply discounts, keeps a data and sales history log and more.
- Accepts magstripe credit card payments, including those from Visa, Mastercard, Discover and American Express (fees apply).
- App sends deposits to your bank account within 1 to 2 business days, or enjoy instant deposits (fees apply).
Braintree implementation choices
Braintree’s Vault is designed to keep encrypted payment details behind gateway tokens. Your application stores the token and customer relationship, not the underlying card number. Plan for token lifecycle events, PayPal-specific states and recurring subscription webhooks.
Stripe implementation choices
Stripe supports hosted and API-based payment flows. Billing handles subscription mechanics, and Connect adds marketplace or platform capabilities. Its single-integration approach and extensive documentation are particularly useful when a small engineering team wants to launch quickly.
Choose by business situation
Pick Stripe when launch speed is the priority
Stripe is the practical default for a new developer-led product that needs cards, multiple payment methods, international currencies and subscriptions without negotiating an enterprise contract first.
Pick Braintree when PayPal drives conversion
Braintree belongs on the shortlist when customers expect PayPal and you want PayPal, cards, vaulted payment methods and recurring billing in one gateway. Validate eligibility for your country, products and chosen PayPal flow.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Pick Adyen when scale and localization dominate
Adyen is the stronger fit for a larger or multinational merchant that needs extensive local-method support, omnichannel reporting, flexible settlement currencies, enterprise controls and volume-based commercial terms.
A selection and implementation checklist
- List every selling country, settlement currency, payment method and card-present channel.
- Estimate monthly transaction count, average order value, cross-border share, refunds and chargebacks.
- Ask each provider for written pricing for that exact mix, including PayPal or local-method fees, FX and payout charges.
- Confirm business, country and product eligibility before committing to a payment method.
- Choose hosted checkout, provider components or tokenization where they reduce raw card-data exposure.
- Design webhook handling for authorization, capture, failure, retry, refund, dispute and payout events.
- Map payment states to account entitlements so a failed renewal cannot leave access indefinitely active.
- Test sandbox and production differences, 3-D Secure or other authentication paths, duplicate requests, webhook retries and partial refunds.
Final decision
Use Stripe for the fastest broad-feature launch, Braintree for a PayPal-led recurring-payment model, and Adyen for a global or omnichannel operation where localized methods and negotiated enterprise economics justify a more involved evaluation. Make the final call from your transaction mix and operational requirements, not from a generic rate comparison.
