To monitor competitors’ ads, search the public ad library for each platform they use, keep a dated record of what you find, and revisit it on a regular schedule. There is no single native library that searches every platform at once. Treat visible ads as evidence of creative and messaging—not proof of targeting, sales, or profitability.

What advertising competitive intelligence can tell you

Competitive ad research is a systematic review of competitors’ creative, copy, hooks, offers, platforms, and visible recurrence. Its value is in generating evidence-backed ideas for your own creative brief or test plan. A public listing does not establish that an ad is profitable, that a particular person was targeted, or that the same creative will work for your business.

Start with a focused set of direct competitors that share your audience or offer. You can add a few aspirational brands where their category or creative approach is relevant. AdLibrary recommends three to seven brands as a working range, but that is vendor guidance rather than a universal rule: AdLibrary’s competitor-research framework.

Which ad libraries to check

Native ad libraries are separate, so choose sources based on the channels your competitors use. Search each relevant source independently; fields, history, and search behavior vary by platform, geography, and ad category.

Source Best for Important limit
Meta Ad Library Discovering ads on Facebook and Instagram. Available history and fields vary by category and geography. An empty search is not proof that the advertiser ran no ads.
Google Ads Transparency Center Researching Google advertising surfaces. Its visible history and data fields differ from Meta’s; check it separately when Google matters to the competitor’s media mix.
TikTok Creative Center Exploring TikTok creative resources, including Top Ads, Keyword Insights, Creative Insights, trends, and creative tools. Featured creative is useful for inspiration, not independently verified proof of competitor performance. TikTok describes Creative Center as “a free, public-facing website serving as a one-stop shop for TikTok creative resources globally” in its SMB Creative Playbook.

LinkedIn, Pinterest, and other services have their own libraries and search behavior. Add them when the competitor’s channel mix justifies it. Aggregated services may bring research into one interface, but verify which data they collect and whether a displayed value is a platform disclosure or a vendor estimate. AdLibrary’s comparison discusses differences in platform coverage and history; use current platform documentation for exact retention or disclosure rules rather than assuming a fixed window.

A repeatable competitor-ad monitoring workflow

1. Define the brands and channels

List the direct competitors and any relevant aspirational brands. For each, note the consumer-facing brand, likely social page or handle, domain, and the platforms worth checking. A legal company name can differ from the name customers recognize.

2. Search with more than one identifier

Try the brand name and, where the library supports it, its domain or platform-specific advertiser identity. If a search returns nothing, try alternate spellings, page names, handles, or company names before drawing a conclusion. Lookup options vary between platforms.

3. Make a dated observation log

A spreadsheet is sufficient for a small competitor set. Record the advertiser, platform, date checked, creative or format, visible copy, offer, destination URL or landing page, and any disclosed start/end or reach information. Recheck the same brands and channels on a consistent cadence so you can distinguish change from a one-time snapshot.

Keep disclosed fields separate from your interpretation. For example, note a displayed start date as a visible platform field; do not turn it into a claim about how long the ad has been profitable.

4. Compare message, offer, and destination

Look beyond whether an ad exists. Compare its hook, audience cues, format, offer, landing page, and repeated appearances. Note whether several ads use the same angle, whether the offer changes, or whether the destination page differs from the apparent campaign message. Recurrence and public longevity are clues worth investigating, not sales evidence.

5. Turn observations into original tests

Extract the underlying principle—such as demonstrating a use case, addressing an objection, or structuring an offer—and adapt it to your product, audience, and brand. Do not copy a competitor’s creative. End each review with a test plan, a creative brief, or a decision to stop pursuing an angle.

How to judge a monitoring tool

Manual checks of platform-native libraries and a tracking log are often enough for a small set. Consider an aggregated research service when one search interface, broader coverage, saved examples, exports, an API, team collaboration, or a persistent archive would materially improve your workflow. Before paying, check:

  • Platform coverage: Does it cover the channels your competitors actually use?
  • History and continuity: Does it show only currently visible ads, or can it retain past observations?
  • Fields and evidence: Are creative, copy, advertiser identity, dates, geography, targeting, reach, or spend ranges actually available for the relevant category and region?
  • Search and workflow: Can you search useful identifiers, save examples, annotate findings, and share them with your creative team?
  • Access and scale: Is manual browsing sufficient, or do you need exports, an API, or an archive?
  • Data quality and cost: Which values are directly disclosed, which are vendor estimates, and is the time saved worth the price?

Do not compare tools as though vendor estimates were official platform disclosures. A service’s claims about coverage and history are not a substitute for checking how it labels data and what its collection method supports.

Why an ad-library search can be incomplete

Library visibility is uneven across platforms, regions, and ad categories. In a 2020 Brazilian Facebook political-ad monitoring study, the researchers reported that 34 of 835 ads their model classified as political matched the Facebook Ad Library dataset. That result describes that study’s sample and method; it should not be generalized to current commercial advertising, other regions, or other platforms. The paper is available at the ACM Digital Library.

For day-to-day monitoring, the practical lesson is narrower: a missing result does not prove an ad never ran. Record the source and date you checked, use alternate identifiers where possible, and avoid treating public-library visibility as a complete archive.

For capturing a specific public ad-library page or landing page as an image or PDF, ScreenshotNeo provides a website screenshot API and MCP server. One GET request returns a screenshot or PDF; its cleanup steps can accept consent banners and remove known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture. Each cleanup step can be turned off. Bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits cost nothing, and response headers identify the page verdict and billing status. Its MCP server gives AI agents tools for screenshots and page information.

Use a page URL you are authorized to access. Keep in mind that a screenshot is a dated record of the page shown to the capture request; it does not establish ad delivery, targeting, or campaign results.

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp

See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for request options. ScreenshotNeo offers 1,000 screenshots per month free with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000. Learn about ScreenshotNeo or sign up for the free plan.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I find every competitor ad in one platform-native search?

No. Platform-native libraries are separate. Search each relevant platform, or evaluate an aggregated service and verify its coverage and data labels.

Does a long-running or featured ad prove it is successful?

No. Longevity and featured status can suggest an idea to investigate, but neither verifies sales or profitability.

Should I copy a competitor’s ad if it appears repeatedly?

No. Identify the underlying message or use case and adapt it into an original test for your own product and audience.
