Chocolate and sweets were the most preferred Advent calendar type in a 2025 survey of Great Britain adults, but the best fit depends on what the recipient will actually enjoy and use. Beauty, toy and drink calendars each suit different preferences and constraints; compare the contents, not just the category name.
What do people prefer?
In a YouGov survey of 2,092 adults in Great Britain, fielded November 6–7, 2025, respondents imagined buying or receiving a complete, ready-made Advent calendar from a store for themselves. They could select up to three types. Chocolate and sweets led, followed by drinks, beauty/cosmetics and toys.

| Calendar type | Selected as a preferred type |
|---|---|
| Chocolate and sweets | 62% |
| Drinks, including examples such as tea, coffee, beer and wine | 18% |
| Beauty and cosmetics | 14% |
| Toys | 5% |
These are multiple-select responses, not market shares or percentages that add up to 100%. They describe stated preferences in this particular Great Britain adult sample, not sales, product quality or satisfaction. YouGov’s survey asked respondents to choose up to three applicable answers.
How to compare the fillings
A category label does not tell you whether a calendar is good value or suitable for a particular person. Look at the actual items and how they fit the recipient.
#1 Best Overall
- The 2026 Bonne Maman Advent Calendar holds 24 mini glass jars, each filled with a different limited-edition holiday spread — flavors made once a year, for December only.
- EXCLUSIVE SEASONAL FLAVORS: Each door reveals something new — festive fruit combinations and seasonal pairings that can't be found on the regular shelf any time of year.
- Every jar is made in France with real fruit, no high fructose corn syrup, no artificial additives. Non-GMO Project Verified, gluten-free, and kosher.
- The mini glass jars with their red-check lids are reusable long after December — for spices, small gifts, or holiday place settings that guests will want to keep.
- One of the few food gifts that sells out annually. Thoughtful, collectible, and genuinely delicious — for the host, the foodie, the person who has everything.
Chocolate and sweets
The category was the leading preference in the survey. Before buying, check the assortment, piece sizes, ingredient and allergen information, and whether the recipient wants a daily sweet. If dietary restrictions matter, rely on the package for the specific product rather than assuming all calendars contain the same ingredients.
A food alert illustrates why product-specific checking matters: on December 3, 2025, Spain’s AESAN issued a notice about one lot of Milka Pop-Up 3D (lot CWS1252831, 163 g) distributed without Spanish-language labeling. The notice advised people with specified allergies or intolerances—including to milk, soy, hazelnuts and other nuts, egg, wheat or gluten—who had the product not to consume it; it said there was no risk to the rest of the population. This was a lot-specific labeling alert, not evidence that chocolate calendars as a category are unsafe. See AESAN’s notice.

Beauty and cosmetics
The survey records beauty/cosmetics as a preference category; it does not assess product quality or whether products suit a particular person’s skin. Check whether the calendar contains full-size products, samples or a mix; which product types are included; and the ingredient information. Consider the recipient’s existing routine and known sensitivities, and whether they are likely to use the items rather than accumulate them.

Toys
Toy calendars are best judged against the intended age and the safety of the individual pieces. Review age guidance and warnings, including those concerning small or detachable parts, batteries, and product quality. Requirements depend on the product and jurisdiction.

In Great Britain, Office for Product Safety & Standards guidance for toys supplied in or into GB was updated March 24, 2025. It describes safety requirements for toys intended for play by children under 14; Northern Ireland has separate guidance. In the United States, the CPSC says ASTM F963 is a mandatory consumer product safety standard for children’s toys, and its third-party testing and certification requirements apply to products designed or intended primarily for children 12 or younger. These are jurisdiction-specific rules, not one international standard. Consult the relevant Great Britain toy-safety guidance or CPSC toy guidance.
Product notices should also be read narrowly. On June 26, 2025, the CPSC warned consumers to stop using and dispose of a particular light-up Nativity set sold as a “Nativity Advent Calendar”: children could open its battery compartment and reach button-cell batteries. The identified item had been sold online on Amazon from August 2024 to March 2025. The agency said, “The CPSC urges consumers to stop using the Nativity sets immediately and dispose of them.” That warning concerns the named product, not toy Advent calendars generally. See the CPSC warning.

Drinks
“Drinks” covers quite different calendars: YouGov’s examples included tea, coffee, beer and wine, and the survey did not compare those subtypes. Check whether the contents are alcoholic or non-alcoholic, what kinds and number of servings are included, and whether the recipient can and wants to consume them. Also consider storage and serving needs.

- Made in Europe: A festive European cookie assortment featuring 24 treats and 290g of seasonal goodness, beautifully suited for Christmas gifting, sharing and holiday celebrations.
- Start with the recipient: choose a type they already enjoy, rather than treating the survey’s overall preference order as a rule for every person.
- Inspect the contents: check product types, sizes and quantities, and whether the daily items are likely to be useful or wanted.
- Account for constraints: review food allergens and dietary needs, cosmetic ingredients and known sensitivities, toy age guidance and warnings, or drink alcohol content and serving needs.
- Check product-specific notices: use current official notices for the actual product and lot where relevant. France’s RappelConso database, for example, contains past Advent-calendar notices involving a toy with a retractable blade, incorrect taste, and food recalls for Listeria or Salmonella; historical notices do not show that calendars as a whole are currently risky. See RappelConso.
- Match the budget to likely use: compare the actual items and sizes with what the recipient values. The survey does not establish value for money, so category popularity alone cannot answer that question.
For a gift, also consider whether the calendar’s format suits the recipient’s routine: a daily sweet, beauty sample, small toy or drink serving is only a benefit if it is welcome and usable.
