Held in Valencia on 6–7 October 2026, the professional seminar connected composites, fire-safe formulations, automated manufacturing, energy technologies and functional coatings with the certification and production work needed for real deployment.
What HI!-PLASTICS 2026 was
The two-day event brought together more than 25 speakers and more than 100 attendees in Valencia, Spain. AIMPLAS listed registration at €400–€500. Its central premise was that advanced materials can help transform strategic sectors including aerospace, defence, automotive, transport, shipbuilding, electronics, construction and energy.

A post-event account from Redit described the first edition as an examination of composites, fire resistance, advanced manufacturing, surface functionalization and new applications for demanding sectors. It also stressed that material development must be integrated with production, qualification and structural monitoring.

The five technical pillars
1. Advanced composites and structural materials
The composites programme covered thermoplastic composites, PEEK and other advanced thermoplastic matrices, continuous-fibre composites and monomaterial polypropylene (PP) composites. These options address the same industrial question from different angles: how to obtain the required strength and durability while controlling weight, processing complexity and end-of-life handling.

Thermoplastic matrices are particularly relevant where manufacturers need processing routes that can be automated or reheated. Continuous-fibre systems target high structural efficiency, while monomaterial PP approaches can simplify material separation compared with assemblies that combine several incompatible polymer families. The event treated those benefits as design and manufacturing choices, not as automatic advantages; each option still has to meet application-specific mechanical, thermal and certification requirements.
2. Fire resistance and smoke control
Fire safety was a distinct pillar because advanced polymers increasingly appear in electronics, electric mobility, construction and other applications where ignition, flame spread and smoke create regulatory and life-safety risks. Sessions addressed sustainable flame retardants, smoke suppression and regulatory updates, including the requirements associated with new-energy vehicles.
A formulation that passes a flame test is not necessarily a complete solution. Designers must also consider smoke behavior, long-term durability, processing effects and the certification rules for the finished component. The seminar therefore linked flame-retardant chemistry with testing and compliance work rather than presenting additives as a standalone fix.

3. Functional materials and advanced manufacturing
This block focused on additive and automated processes, hybrid solutions, industrialization, scale-up and quality control. The emphasis was the transition from a promising laboratory formulation or prototype to repeatable production.
Automation and additive methods can support complex geometries and more consistent placement of reinforcement, but industrial adoption depends on process windows, inspection methods and a documented quality system. Hybrid approaches may combine processes or material classes when one route cannot meet all performance or throughput targets.
4. Energy and dual-use technologies
Hydrogen, energy storage, batteries and sustainable fuels were discussed alongside materials applicable to both civilian and defence settings. These applications place demanding requirements on polymers and composites: resistance to the operating environment, reliable containment or insulation, controlled weight and a qualification path appropriate to the risk.

The dual-use framing matters because a material may need to satisfy different procurement, traceability and assurance expectations in civil and defence programmes even when the underlying chemistry is similar.

5. Industrial coatings and surface functions
The coatings sessions showed how a polymer system can add a surface function rather than only provide bulk structure. Topics included low-energy heated coatings for aerospace ice protection, surface functionalization, self-healing coatings for wind turbines and infrared camouflage pigments.
These examples connect energy consumption and maintenance with performance. A coating that uses less heat, repairs minor damage or provides a controlled optical signature can change the operating cost or service strategy of the larger asset. Its value still depends on adhesion, durability, repairability and qualification in the target environment.

Why competitiveness, safety and sustainability are linked
HI!-PLASTICS 2026 treated these goals as a systems problem. A lighter or stronger material can improve transport efficiency, but only if it can be processed at production volumes, inspected, certified and monitored in service. Similarly, a lower-impact additive or coating matters only when it preserves the required fire, mechanical and durability performance.
- Competitiveness: lighter structures, thermoplastic processing, continuous-fibre automation and coatings that provide extra functions can improve product performance or manufacturing flexibility.
- Safety: flame-retardant chemistry, smoke suppression, fire protection for electric mobility and regulatory alignment address hazards in the finished product, not just in the raw polymer.
- Sustainability: monomaterial PP routes, sustainable retardants, lower-energy coatings, hydrogen and energy-system materials, and efficient scale-up can reduce impacts when their full life-cycle and production requirements are considered.
For engineering teams comparing options, the programme suggests evaluating mechanical performance and weight; fire and smoke behavior; service durability; manufacturability and scale-up; regulatory and certification burden; circularity and end-of-life route; energy use; and total system cost. A material that wins on one axis may lose on another, so the decision belongs at component and system level.

The sustainability discussions were practical rather than limited to recycled-content claims. Monomaterial composites can make future separation and recycling more straightforward than multi-material constructions, while sustainable flame-retardant approaches seek to reduce the impact of fire protection without sacrificing compliance.
Thermoplastic processing can also support manufacturing routes in which parts are reheated or reshaped, although the actual end-of-life route depends on the resin, reinforcement, contamination and available recycling infrastructure. Lower-energy heated coatings address operational energy demand, while hydrogen, batteries and sustainable fuels shift attention to the material requirements of emerging energy systems.
How a laboratory material becomes certified production
The seminar’s strongest industrial message was that chemistry alone does not deliver a commercial component. A practical development path includes the following stages:
- Define the service case: set mechanical, thermal, fire, smoke, chemical, electrical and durability requirements for the actual part and operating environment.
- Select the material architecture: compare matrix, reinforcement, additive or coating choices against weight, performance, circularity and energy objectives.
- Establish a repeatable process: determine processing windows for compounding, forming, additive deposition, automated placement or coating application.
- Characterize the finished structure: test coupons and components, checking not only nominal strength but also defects, interfaces, smoke behavior, ageing and process variation.
- Scale up with quality control: validate equipment, inspection and documentation so that production parts match the qualified material and process.
- Complete certification: demonstrate compliance with the regulations and sector standards governing the application, including fire and safety rules.
- Monitor service performance: use structural-health or condition-monitoring methods where necessary to detect degradation and support maintenance decisions.
This sequence explains why industrialization, characterization, certification and monitoring appeared alongside new materials in the programme: each is required to turn laboratory performance into an acceptable product.

The programme named AEMAC, TPAC, Guztec Polymers, Norner, Budenheim, Huber, William Blythe, Clariant, IMDEA, ICL, Lanxess, Nabaltec, Corpower, Plasmatreat, ITA, Albis and AIMPLAS. Together, these organizations represented material suppliers, technology centres, research bodies and industrial users. That mix reflects the cross-disciplinary nature of advanced plastics: resin and additive development must connect with equipment, testing, process engineering, certification and the needs of the industries that will operate the final component.
What the event means for material decisions
HI!-PLASTICS 2026 positioned advanced plastics as an enabling technology for mobility, aerospace, construction, energy and defence rather than as a narrow polymer specialty. Its five pillars show the decision path clearly: choose a material architecture, make it safely and repeatably, qualify it for the intended environment, and account for energy use and end-of-life from the beginning.
