There is no single standard set of dimensions for an adult acoustic guitar. Body shape and the individual model determine its size. As one full-size dreadnought example, Yamaha lists the FG9 R at 40 7/8 inches (1,039 mm) overall, with a body 19 7/8 inches long, 16 1/4 inches wide, and 3 15/16–4 15/16 inches deep. Its 25 9/16-inch scale length measures the string span from nut to saddle—not the guitar’s outside length.
How big is a full-size acoustic guitar?
A dreadnought is a useful reference, but not a universal adult size. Fender’s approximate dreadnought measurements are 20 inches of body length, 15 inches across the lower bout, about 4 inches deep, and an 11 1/2-inch upper bout. These describe the body, not the complete instrument from endpin to headstock. Fender notes that dimensions vary among manufacturers. Fender’s acoustic body-shape guide gives these approximate figures.

Measurements can differ even between guitars carrying the same body-style name. In Taylor’s Winter 2024 product guide, the dreadnought body is listed at 20 inches long, 16 inches across the lower bout, and 4 5/8 inches deep, with a 25 1/2-inch scale. Taylor’s Grand Concert is listed at 19 1/2 inches long, 15 inches across the lower bout, and 4 3/8 inches deep, with a 24 7/8-inch scale. These are Taylor model-family specifications, not universal dimensions. Taylor’s Winter 2024 guide also distinguishes waist and lower-bout width.
What do the measurements mean?
- Overall length runs from the endpin area to the tip of the headstock. Use it when checking whether the entire guitar fits in a case or storage space.
- Body length measures the body alone; it excludes the neck and headstock. A body-length figure cannot establish whether the full instrument will fit.
- Body width is commonly given at the widest point, the lower bout. Some specifications list upper bout, waist, and lower bout separately, so compare the same measurement.
- Body depth is the front-to-back thickness. A manufacturer may give a range because the body is thinner near the neck and deeper toward the lower bout.
- Scale length is the vibrating string length from nut to saddle. It affects fret spacing and string tension; it is neither body length nor overall length.
Which dimensions matter for fit and comfort?
For case or storage fit, compare the instrument’s overall length with the available space and check the case’s specified interior dimensions. Body length alone is not enough. For the body’s footprint, compare its widest lower-bout measurement and its depth. Those dimensions describe how wide the guitar sits across the player and how far it projects from the body.

Comfort depends on how the instrument sits in playing position, not on a label such as “adult” or “full size.” Taylor advises considering the picking or strumming arm’s relationship to the lower bout and body depth. Scale length affects hand spacing and fret spacing, so it is a separate part of fit. If possible, try the guitar while seated or standing in the way you expect to play it.

How to compare two acoustic guitars
- Check overall length against your case or storage space if the complete instrument must fit.
- Compare body length and lower-bout width to judge the body’s footprint. Confirm that both specifications refer to the same points.
- Compare body depth to understand how far each guitar projects from the player; note whether a listed depth is a range.
- Compare scale length separately for fret spacing and string tension rather than treating it as an outside dimension.
- Verify the exact model’s specifications with its manufacturer. Shape names are useful categories, not guarantees of identical measurements.
