Adobe identifies Photoshop 27.11 as its September 2026 desktop release. The update adds Enhance Edge for refining selections, upgrades the GPT Image 2 model used by Generate Image and Prompt to edit, and includes an Adobe-described Windows performance optimization. It also introduces a free way to explore Firefly inside Photoshop, adds recent-preset management, and fixes several reported issues. Adobe’s release notes describe the features but do not publish independent benchmarks for their performance claims.

Adobe’s September 2026 Photoshop desktop release notes, last updated October 5, 2026, list the following changes in version 27.11.

Enhance Edge refines selections
Enhance Edge is an AI-powered selection-refinement feature aimed at difficult boundaries such as hair, fur, and semi-transparent edges. Adobe says it uses RGBA diffusion to reduce color fringing and capture fine detail. The release notes do not provide comparative test results or a measured accuracy figure, so treat that as Adobe’s description of the feature rather than an independently verified performance result.

GPT Image 2 comes to Generate Image and Prompt to edit
The updated GPT Image 2 model is available in Generate Image and Prompt to edit. Adobe’s example is changing a jacket while preserving faces, logos, and the surrounding scene. Adobe also says the model produces more predictable results with fewer retries; the release notes give no retry counts or benchmark data.

Adobe describes a Windows performance optimization
Adobe says Photoshop on Windows now automatically profiles real-world usage data and feeds it back into production builds, improving performance on common workflows. The release notes call the improvement measurable but do not state a numerical result, test setup, or specific workflow benchmark.
A free Firefly experience is available to explore
Adobe says users can download Photoshop Desktop and sign in with an email address without a subscription to explore the Firefly Image Editor within Photoshop using daily free AI generations. The experience also lets users preview the full Photoshop experience before upgrading. This is not a statement that all Photoshop features are free.

Manage recent presets in New Document

Adobe lists fixes for several reported behaviors:
- Canvas Size retaining its unit selection.
- Apply Image preview when using the modern UI with the GPU disabled.
- Default-unit behavior and recognition of guide units.
- Stroke color and opacity behavior.
- Opacity for images opened from the homescreen.
- Keyboard focus in UXP modal dialogs.
- Area-wise averaging in Color Balance.
What should you check before installing?
Confirm compatibility with Photoshop 27.x requirements
Adobe’s Photoshop technical requirements, updated September 15, 2026, apply to the 27.x line and later; they are not a separate 27.11 hardware recommendation. For Windows systems with Intel or AMD processors, Adobe lists 8 GB RAM as the minimum and 16 GB or more as recommended. Adobe lists a minimum GPU requirement of DirectX 12 feature level 12_0 or later with 1.5 GB of GPU memory, and recommends 4 GB for 4K displays and above. These are compatibility requirements, not guarantees of a particular level of performance.

Those figures cover only part of Adobe’s requirements. Check the current platform-specific table for operating-system versions, processor instruction-set requirements, and GPU age or compatibility conditions before updating, especially if you use macOS or a less common hardware configuration.
Decide whether the headline features matter to your work
If you frequently refine selections around complex edges or use generative editing, Enhance Edge and the GPT Image 2 upgrade are the most directly relevant changes. If your work is unaffected by those tools, the other listed changes may be more important: the Windows optimization, recent-preset controls, or a fix for a behavior you have encountered. Adobe has not published numerical performance comparisons in the release notes, so the Windows claim alone does not establish how much faster a particular setup will feel.

Separate the free Firefly option from a full Photoshop subscription
The free experience described by Adobe is for exploring Firefly Image Editor in Photoshop with daily free AI generations and previewing Photoshop. If you need the full set of Photoshop capabilities, do not assume the free Firefly experience replaces a subscription; Adobe’s release announcement does not say that it does.

Version 27.11 is Adobe’s September 2026 desktop release. Its headline changes focus on selection refinement and generative editing, alongside Adobe’s stated Windows optimization. The remaining additions are preset management, a limited free Firefly exploration path, and customer-reported fixes. The cited release notes provide feature descriptions, but not independent tests or numerical performance results.
