The fastest way to identify the cause is to test whether one PDF fails or every PDF fails. A single failure usually points to an unusually complex, damaged, or graphics-heavy document; failures with all documents call for Acrobat and Windows updates, repair, plug-in and security checks, and—only if those steps fail—a clean reinstall.
What the error actually means
Acrobat can report “Out of Memory” when it cannot obtain or use the address space, rendering resources, plug-ins, or Windows components it needs. That is different from Windows exhausting the physical RAM shown in Task Manager. A PDF may require substantial memory while Acrobat interprets a rendering failure, damaged component, or compatibility conflict as an out-of-memory condition.

Adobe’s crash guidance, updated April 30, 2026, lists invalid plug-ins, corrupted files, and conflicts with system settings among the causes of Acrobat crashes. Its preliminary advice is to update Acrobat and Windows, restart the computer, and then isolate the problem.
Do not treat a historical memory limit as a current specification for every Acrobat installation. In a December 30, 2020 Adobe Community answer, former Adobe Principal Scientist Dov Isaacs wrote that the Windows versions discussed in that thread were 32-bit and limited to a 3GB address space regardless of installed physical memory. That figure is version-specific historical evidence, not a guarantee about current Acrobat builds.

First determine whether one PDF or every PDF fails
When only one PDF triggers the message
Save the file to a local folder instead of repeatedly opening an email attachment or network copy. Then open a different, ordinary PDF. If other files work, the problem is probably tied to the document rather than to your entire Acrobat installation.
Complex CAD exports are a well-known pattern. Isaacs explained that a single CAD page can contain hundreds of thousands of individual line segments, sometimes with zero-width lines and unnecessary transparency. Rendering those objects and blending transparent layers can put heavy pressure on Acrobat’s address space and graphics pipeline. Large scanned documents, image-heavy files, embedded media, unusual fonts, and partially corrupted objects can create similar symptoms.
Adobe does not publish a universal page-count or file-size threshold at which this error occurs. A 20 MB file may be harder to render than a much larger file with simpler content, so file size alone is not a reliable diagnosis.

If a new, small PDF also fails, prioritize the Acrobat installation, Windows updates, plug-ins, Protected View, antivirus or firewall interference, permissions, compatibility settings, runtime components, licensing, and the Windows user profile. Follow the steps below in order, stopping when the error is resolved.
Step-by-step repair sequence
1. Update Acrobat and Windows, then restart
- Open Acrobat and install any available product updates through its Help or update interface.
- Run Windows Update and install pending updates appropriate for your edition.
- Restart Windows, even if the installers did not explicitly request it.
- Open the same PDF again and test a second PDF.
Adobe places this check first because an outdated executable, Windows component, or repaired dependency can produce crashes that look like memory exhaustion.

2. Repair the Acrobat installation
Repair is less disruptive than removing the application and normally preserves your documents and account. In Acrobat, choose Menu > Help > Repair installation, confirm the operation, allow it to finish, and restart Windows. Adobe also documents a Control Panel route: open Control Panel > All Programs, select Acrobat, and choose Repair if that option is shown.
Test both a known-good small PDF and the original file after the restart. If only the original still fails, return to the file-specific branch rather than repeatedly repairing Acrobat.
3. Isolate third-party plug-ins
Plug-ins load inside Acrobat and can crash the application before a document is fully displayed. Adobe has identified incompatible third-party components as a cause and has cited examples such as ComposerPlayerControl.dll, Seclore Desktop Client, IntoWords, PitStop Pro, and ImageRight.
- List recently installed or updated Acrobat plug-ins and document-management integrations.
- Disable or remove one suspect component at a time, following that plug-in vendor’s supported procedure.
- Restart Windows after each change and test the same PDF.
If disabling a plug-in stops the error, leave it disabled until a compatible version is available. Do not delete random DLL files from Windows or Acrobat folders; an unsupported removal can create a second installation problem.
4. Test Protected View carefully
Protected View is a security control that can conflict with some files or integrations. To perform a controlled test, open Edit > Preferences > Security (Enhanced), clear Enable Protected View, restart Acrobat, and retry the file.

This is a diagnostic change, not a recommended permanent setting. If disabling Protected View does not help, turn it back on immediately. If it does help, keep the protection disabled only long enough to identify the incompatible document or integration and then seek an updated plug-in, a safer workflow, or an Acrobat fix.

Security software can inspect Acrobat processes, temporary files, plug-ins, or network licensing traffic. Temporarily test with the antivirus or firewall’s real-time protection disabled only if your organization’s policy permits it and you understand the risk. Reproduce the error with a local, trusted PDF.
If the test proves that security software is responsible, restore protection and add an Acrobat exception only through the security product’s supported controls. Keep the exception as narrow as possible and do not leave antivirus protection disabled as a “fix.”
6. Check Windows compatibility and permissions
Right-click the Acrobat shortcut, choose Properties > Compatibility, and make sure Run this program in compatibility mode is not selected. Compatibility mode can force older behavior that conflicts with a current Acrobat build.
For a permissions test, right-click Acrobat and choose Run as administrator. This should be a temporary diagnostic step, not the default way to run a document reader. If the error disappears only with elevation, check folder permissions, controlled-folder access, redirected profiles, and corporate policy rather than permanently granting unnecessary administrator rights.

Create or use a different Windows user account and test Acrobat there. If it works in the second account, the original profile may contain damaged preferences, permissions, or per-user plug-in settings. Moving to a new profile can be safer than deleting unknown files from the existing one.
7. Install the Visual C++ runtime on ARM64 Windows when required
Adobe identifies missing or incorrect Visual C++ runtime files as a possible Acrobat crash cause on ARM64-based Windows devices. Install the latest Visual C++ Redistributable that matches the system and restart Windows. Then test Acrobat before changing unrelated settings. This branch is particularly relevant when Acrobat worked previously but began failing after a system image, update, or application change.
8. Handle a document-specific failure
When one file is the only trigger, preserve the original and work from a copy. Ask the document’s creator to export it again with simpler settings, remove unnecessary transparency, flatten complex layers, reduce image resolution where acceptable, or split a very large document into smaller sections. For CAD drawings, a simplified plot or rasterized review copy can avoid the extreme object counts that stress Acrobat.
Open the file in another reputable PDF viewer as a scope test. If it fails everywhere, the file is likely damaged or malformed. If another viewer opens it but Acrobat does not, use that viewer to print or export a simplified copy, or ask the creator for a standards-compliant re-export. Avoid repeatedly forcing Acrobat to open a file that causes immediate crashes; unsaved changes and temporary files can be lost.
9. Perform a clean reinstall only after repair and isolation
A clean reinstall removes damaged components that an in-place repair cannot replace, but it is more disruptive and can remove settings, integrations, and cached licensing data. Before starting, preserve custom actions, stamps, plug-in installers, and any settings your workplace requires, and confirm that you can sign in to reactivate Acrobat.

- Uninstall Acrobat using Windows’ installed-app controls.
- Use Adobe’s Cleaner Tool to remove Acrobat and Creative Cloud components as Adobe instructs for a clean removal.
- Remove the Adobe folders Adobe lists under Program Files, ProgramData, and the user AppData locations. Do not remove unrelated folders or files outside Adobe’s procedure.
- Restart Windows.
- Install the current Acrobat 64-bit package, sign in, apply updates, and restart once more.
- Test with a small local PDF before restoring third-party plug-ins or enterprise integrations.
Reintroduce integrations one at a time. If the error returns immediately after a specific plug-in or security policy is restored, you have a more useful cause than you would get from reinstalling everything repeatedly.

Why adding RAM is usually not the answer
More physical memory can help a system that is genuinely paging heavily, but no authoritative current figure says that a particular amount of RAM, free disk space, PDF size, or page count prevents Acrobat’s “Out of Memory” message. The historical 3GB address-space statement applies to the Windows builds discussed in a 2020 Adobe Community answer and should not be presented as a universal limit for current Acrobat.
Before buying hardware, establish the trigger, update and repair the software, and check the document and plug-in branches. Hardware upgrades cannot repair a malformed PDF, an incompatible DLL, Protected View conflict, blocked runtime, damaged profile, or corrupted Acrobat installation.

Useful evidence makes Adobe or an administrator far more likely to identify the actual fault. Record the exact error text, whether one or every PDF fails, the Acrobat edition and version, Windows edition and architecture, the PDF’s origin, and the step after which the behavior changed. Note installed plug-ins, antivirus products, compatibility settings, and whether a second Windows account reproduces the problem.
Acrobat includes a diagnostic workflow under Help > Troubleshoot Acrobat. Open the Acrobat Diagnostics tool, reproduce the error, stop diagnostics, and share the generated logs through your organization’s approved support channel. Also collect Windows crash logs and provide them to Adobe Customer Care or the Adobe Acrobat Community when requested. Redact confidential document content before sharing files or logs publicly.
Practical prevention
- Keep Acrobat and Windows updated instead of postponing security and reliability fixes indefinitely.
- Prefer standards-compliant PDF exports and ask CAD users to simplify extreme vector and transparency complexity for review copies.
- Install only plug-ins that support your Acrobat build and remove integrations you no longer use.
- Keep Protected View and antivirus protection enabled after diagnostic tests.
- Save important PDFs locally before troubleshooting network, email, or document-management variables.
- Maintain backups of custom Acrobat settings and plug-in installers before a clean reinstall.
Bottom line
Start with scope, not hardware: one failing PDF points toward document complexity or corruption, while every PDF failing points toward Acrobat, Windows, plug-ins, security software, permissions, runtime components, or the user profile. Update and restart, repair Acrobat, isolate integrations and security controls, then use a clean 64-bit reinstall only as a last resort. Re-enable security protections after testing, and collect diagnostics rather than guessing when the message persists.
