Google says its new Gemini Skills are available across all Google AI subscription tiers, so the company has not announced a paid-plan requirement for the feature. For personal accounts, Google’s Help page says Skills are available to people over 18 signed in to a personal Google Account. That does not establish unlimited free usage: Google has not published a blanket guarantee or usage limits.
Are Gemini Skills free?
Google’s September 30, 2026 announcement says Skills are “available to all Google AI subscription tiers.” That supports saying a paid Google AI subscription is not required for the feature as announced. Google’s Gemini Apps Help page specifies that individuals over 18 using a personal Google Account can access Skills; work and school account availability is planned to expand.

Google has not stated that access is unlimited, published a Skills-specific usage allowance, or said every account, age group, region, and Gemini feature has identical availability. The precise takeaway is that Skills are available across subscription tiers, subject to Google’s eligibility and feature restrictions.

Skills are saved instructions for tasks you repeat, such as applying a preferred writing style or following brand rules. Instead of rebuilding those directions in every prompt, you can call a Skill in a chat by typing a slash and its name. Gemini can also recognize when a Skill fits a prompt and apply it, and you can combine multiple Skills in one conversation.

Google says Skills can include reference materials such as plain-text documents, PDFs, and images. Gemini Help also says users can import a Skill made on another platform by uploading its SKILL.md file. Creating Skills by uploading files is currently available in the Gemini Mac app and web app. You can create as many Skills as you want, but only 100 can be active at once.
How are Skills different from Gems?
Gems were custom versions of Gemini configured around a particular role or subject. Skills are reusable instruction sets that can be applied inside a regular chat, including alongside other Skills. Google is moving users from Gems to Skills, but the features are not interchangeable in every respect.

Google says Skills are based on the open Markdown SKILL.md format. That makes the format usable for importing instructions, but it does not mean Skills fully sync across Google products: Gemini app Skills and Workspace Skills currently remain separate.
Are Gemini Gems going away?
Yes, but Google’s transition dates vary by account type. Personal-account Gems begin transitioning in November 2026. For Workspace business, enterprise, and nonprofit accounts, Google says removal will be no sooner than March 1, 2027; for Workspace education accounts, no sooner than June 1, 2027.
For Workspace, Skills begin rolling out on October 5, 2026 for Rapid Release domains and October 19, 2026 for Scheduled Release domains. Google Workspace Help also says that, in Workspace Studio, users can no longer add an “Ask a Gem” step to new flows, while existing flows continue to work until 2027.
Will my Gems automatically become Skills?
Google says remaining Gems in the Gemini app will be converted automatically. Workspace Gems migrate to inactive draft Skills, which their creators must review and activate before using or sharing them. Workspace migration preserves names, descriptions, instructions, uploaded knowledge files, and Drive permissions and sharing settings.

The separate Workspace and Gemini app Skill libraries do not currently sync. If you need the same Skill in both places, Google says you must recreate it on each surface.

Google’s Gemini Apps Help page lists Canvas and Deep Research among the features that do not currently work with Skills. It also names video creation, music creation, and guided learning as unsupported. Google’s September 30 announcement says sharing and connections to Drive and NotebookLM files are planned for the coming weeks; those are announced additions, not capabilities to assume are already available.

Why the Gems comparison can be confusing
Google introduced Gems as a free feature before announcing Skills. In a March 13, 2025 post, Gemini app product director Dave Citron said Gems were “starting to roll out for everyone at no cost in the Gemini app.” That historical rollout was limited to select languages and people 18 or older. It is useful context for the predecessor feature, but it is not a promise that Skills have unlimited free usage.
