Neither shoe is a universal winner. The Adidas Adizero Adios Pro 5 and Nike Alphafly 3 use different propulsion systems and have different published heel-to-toe drops. The right choice depends on how each fits and feels at your marathon pace—not on a specification or a brand’s speed claims. Try both before race day if you can.
How the two shoes are built
Both are road-racing shoes designed for long-distance efforts, but their midsole systems differ. These are manufacturer descriptions of construction, not proof that one design will make every runner faster or more comfortable.

Adidas Adizero Adios Pro 5
Adidas describes the Adios Pro 5 as a marathon race-day shoe, built with LIGHTSTRIKE PRO foam and a carbon-infused ENERGYRIM. Adidas says the new design improves energy return by 9% over its predecessor; that figure is the company’s product-development claim, not an independently established result for every runner. Adidas’s announcement and its US product listing describe the shoe and its design.
Nike Alphafly 3
Nike positions the Alphafly 3 for road races from the half-marathon through the marathon. Its listed construction combines ZoomX foam, two forefoot Air Zoom units and a full-length carbon-fibre Flyplate. Those components explain the shoe’s design, but do not guarantee a particular pace or outcome for an individual. Nike’s product page provides its specifications.

Published weight and geometry
The figures below come from different sources and shoe sizes, so they are not a direct, like-for-like weighing. Treat them as reference specifications rather than a precise weight contest.

T3 published the Adios Pro 5 measurements on 2026-09-22 in its Adios Pro 5 report. The listed drops—4 mm and 8 mm—are a meaningful specification difference if you already know you prefer one kind of geometry. They do not, on their own, establish which shoe will feel better or work better for you.

Choose by fit and running feel
Check fit before features
Try each shoe on and assess heel hold, toe room, arch feel and overall comfort. If possible, run in both at the pace you expect to hold in your race; a brief try-on cannot reproduce how a shoe feels after many miles. Manufacturer measurements cannot predict an individual fit.

If you have a settled preference for lower- or higher-drop shoes, compare the published 4 mm Adios Pro 5 and 8 mm Alphafly 3 figures against what already feels natural to you. A drop figure is not a promise about comfort, performance or injury risk.

Decide which construction feels right
The Alphafly 3 pairs foam with forefoot Air Zoom units and a full-length plate; the Adios Pro 5 pairs foam with a carbon-infused rim structure. Consider how each feels underfoot during a run rather than assuming that a particular component will deliver a personal record.
Use reviews as individual experiences
Tom’s Guide’s reviewer says they raced in the Alphafly across distances, had more than 80 miles in it and found it comfortable over long distances. That is one reviewer’s experience, not a controlled comparison with the Adios Pro 5 or a guarantee for another runner. Nike also hosts a testimonial from marathoner and Mill City runner Moe Murunga calling the Alphafly 3 “very bouncy and very comfortable—perfect for the marathon”; treat it as a Nike-hosted endorsement, not independent comparative evidence.

Prices and availability depend on location
At the time of access on 2026-10-04, adidas’s US listing showed the Adios Pro 5 at $275. Nike’s Sweden page showed a discounted price in Swedish kronor for a specific Alphafly 3 color and style. These are location-specific page snapshots, not directly comparable global prices or a guarantee of what either shoe will cost later. Check your local store for current pricing, available sizes and return terms.
