Add “Hash Value” to the Right-Click Menu of Files in Windows 11

Windows 11 has no built-in “Hash value” item in the File Explorer right-click menu. The hashing itself is built in, though. PowerShell’s Get-FileHash does the work, and you can wire it to a custom context-menu entry with a registry verb. This guide shows the command, a registry template for the menu entry, and the limits you should know before relying on it.

Step 1: Get a hash without any menu changes

Open PowerShell and run:

Get-FileHash -LiteralPath 'C:pathtofile'

The output has three fields: Algorithm, Hash and Path. -LiteralPath takes the path exactly as written, so characters like [ and ] are not treated as wildcards. Microsoft Learn’s Get-FileHash reference says: “By default, the Get-FileHash cmdlet uses the SHA256 algorithm, although any hash algorithm that is supported by the target operating system can be used.”

To pick another algorithm, add -Algorithm. For example:

Get-FileHash -LiteralPath 'C:pathtofile' -Algorithm SHA384 | Format-List

Piping to Format-List prints each field on its own line, so a long hash is not truncated.

Choosing an algorithm

Algorithm When to use it
SHA256 (default) Most published checksums. Use it unless the download page says otherwise.
SHA384, SHA512 When the publisher lists one of these.
SHA1, MD5 Only for simple change detection, or to match a legacy checksum. Microsoft says they are no longer considered secure against attack. Do not use them for files that need protection from tampering.

Whatever you use, the algorithm must match the one the publisher used. Comparing a SHA256 value to an MD5 value will never match.

A hash identifies file content, not its name. Renaming a file leaves the hash unchanged, and changing any content changes it.

Step 2: Add a “Hash value” entry with a registry verb

Microsoft’s Windows Shell documentation (Extending Shortcut Menus) describes two ways to add commands to a file’s shortcut menu. One is a registry verb tied to a file type. The other is a shortcut-menu handler, which is more complex and suits file-specific behavior. A registry verb is enough here.

The template below applies to all files for the current user only. It is built from the documented mechanism. It has not been tested on every Windows 11 build, so try it on a copy of your setup if you can, and keep the removal step handy.

The .reg template

Save the following as add-hash.reg in Notepad, using plain text:

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_CURRENT_USERSoftwareClasses*shellHashValue]
@="Hash value"

[HKEY_CURRENT_USERSoftwareClasses*shellHashValuecommand]
@="powershell.exe -NoExit -Command "Get-FileHash -LiteralPath '%1' | Format-List""

Double-click the file and confirm the prompt. Then right-click a file. The entry sits in the classic menu, so on Windows 11 you may need to choose Show more options (or press Shift+F10). Microsoft’s Shell article does not establish exactly where a custom item appears in the current Explorer, so check this on your own machine.

Quoting and its limits

  • The Shell documentation advises quoting command elements that may contain spaces, including the %1 filename placeholder. The template wraps the path in single quotes inside the PowerShell string for this reason.
  • A file name that itself contains a single quote (for example Bob's file.iso) will break this simple command. A more robust launcher script would be needed for such names.
  • -NoExit keeps the window open so you can read and copy the hash. Remove it if you want the window to close right away, but then you cannot read the result.

Removing the entry

Delete the key, either in Registry Editor or with this .reg file:

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[-HKEY_CURRENT_USERSoftwareClasses*shellHashValue]

Verifying a download

  1. Copy the published checksum and note its algorithm from the download page.
  2. Run the menu entry or the command with the matching -Algorithm.
  3. Compare the two strings. Any difference means the file is not the one the publisher described, so download it again.

PowerShell displays the hash in uppercase. Publishers often list lowercase, and the case does not matter.
