In Chrome 131 or later, add a repeating footer to a PDF with CSS page margin boxes: reserve space in @page margins, then place text or page counters in an @bottom-* box. Open the page in Chrome, choose Print, select Save as PDF, and check the preview.
Use CSS margin boxes for a repeating footer
Put the footer in a page margin box rather than in the document flow. A normal element at the bottom of a web page appears at the end of the content; it does not automatically repeat on every printed page. Chrome documents CSS margin-box support from Chrome 131. </html>The three-value margin sets top, left/right, and bottom space. The bottom margin gives the footer room; adjust it if the footer is clipped or crowds the document. The margin-box dimensions follow the @page margins. The example is a documented-syntax pattern; inspect the PDF produced by the Chrome version and print workflow you use.
Change the footer text and position
Use @bottom-center for centered text or @bottom-right for a right-aligned item. The CSS content property supplies the text. You can use more than one bottom margin box, as the example does.

Add page numbers
counter(page) provides the current page number, and Chrome’s documentation describes counter(pages) for the total page count. The example formats these as “Page 1 of 4.”
Save the page as a PDF in Chrome
- Open the HTML page in Chrome 131 or later.
- Open Chrome’s print dialog and review the preview.
- Choose Save as PDF as the destination, then save the file.
- Open the saved PDF and check that the footer appears on each page and does not overlap the document text.
Chrome can also add its own URL, date, and page headers or footers when there is enough margin space. If those appear alongside your authored footer, turn off Headers and footers in the print dialog. That browser-generated material is controlled by the user’s print setting, not by the CSS footer. See Chrome’s explanation of printed headers and footers.

Keep the footer clear of the document
- Reserve enough bottom margin in
@pagefor the footer’s text and font size. - If the footer is clipped, increase the bottom margin and check the saved PDF preview again.
- If the document body runs too close to the footer, increase the margin or reduce the footer text.
- Use
@media printfor print-only adjustments, such as hiding controls that should remain on screen but not appear in the PDF. MDN documents print media styles for printed output, including PDF, at Printing – CSS.
Compatibility and browser-generated footer behavior
The CSS margin-box technique is documented for Chrome 131 and later. Do not assume that older Chrome releases or other browsers and print pipelines support it identically; verify the actual target environment. MDN notes compatibility considerations for @page at its @page reference.
Chrome also describes a layout interaction for its automatically generated browser content: if the first printed page has no room for that content, it may not appear on later pages even when those pages have room. This note concerns Chrome-generated material; it is not evidence that CSS-authored margin-box footers have the same behavior. Details are in Chrome’s margin-box article.

Does this CSS footer require a printer?
No. Choose Save as PDF in Chrome’s print dialog; a physical printer is not required.

Yes. Use counter(page) and counter(pages) in the margin-box content, then verify the result in the generated PDF.
