1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsIf an ad blocker is not working on Crunchyroll, first update its filter lists and make sure Crunchyroll is not allowlisted. Then temporarily disable the blocker to determine whether it is causing the failure. If playback works with the blocker off, adjust its rules or allow Crunchyroll. If playback still fails, the cause is more likely another extension, an outdated browser, damaged cookies, a network or device problem, or a regional access issue.
Use the sequence below to separate ads appearing from a video that will not load. That distinction prevents you from changing settings that cannot fix the actual problem.

Identify exactly what is failing
“Adblock not working” can describe several different symptoms. Write down the browser and version, device, country or region, show and episode, exact behavior, and any error code before changing settings. This record makes each test comparable and gives support the details it needs.
| What you see | What it suggests | Best first test |
|---|---|---|
| Ads appear, but the episode plays normally | The blocker’s lists, allowlist, or Acceptable Ads setting may be permitting the request. | Update lists, review allowlist entries, and reload. |
| Black screen, endless spinner, or a video that will not start | An ad blocker or another extension may be interfering with playback scripts. | Temporarily disable the blocker and retry the same episode. |
| Playback works in a private window | An extension or stored browser data is involved in the normal session. | Disable extensions one at a time, then clear site data if necessary. |
| Login fails or several titles fail on one device | Cookies, cache, browser compatibility, or the local network may be responsible. | Reset local data, test a supported browser, and switch networks. |
| The same failure follows you to another device and network | The issue may be account-, region-, or service-related rather than a local blocker rule. | Collect diagnostics and contact Crunchyroll support. |
Why an ad blocker can stop Crunchyroll video
Crunchyroll’s own troubleshooting guidance treats content-blocking extensions as possible causes of loading and playback problems. Its help article “Crunchyroll isn’t loading for me—how do I fix it?” says: “Temporarily disable ad‑blockers, pop‑up blockers, script blockers, or similar extensions.” A separate Crunchyroll article, “Why can’t I watch videos on my browser?”, states: “Turn off ad blockers: Some ad blockers can interfere with video playback.” These are compatibility warnings, not proof that every playback failure is caused by a blocker.

- No more juggling remotes: Power up your TV, adjust the volume, and control your Roku device with one remote. Use your voice to quickly search, play entertainment, and more.

- TV, simplified: With setup that only takes minutes, a simple-to-navigate Home Screen, and an uncluttered remote control that does all you need—Roku makes it easier to watch the TV you love.
A blocker can therefore fail in two directions: it may allow an ad because its rules are old or the site is allowlisted, or it may block a request that the player needs and prevent playback. Testing with the blocker off is reversible and isolates that variable without committing you to a permanent setting.
Repair the blocker before changing your browser
Update filter lists and blocking components
Out-of-date lists are the most targeted fix when ads appear while everything else works. Open your blocker’s dashboard or settings, find the filter-list or filter-update screen, run an update, and reload the Crunchyroll tab. Keep the update result visible until it completes; a browser restart is useful if the extension reports that a restart is required.
- AdBlock: keep EasyList and Anti-Circumvention filters enabled, update the lists, and review the Acceptable Ads setting. AdBlock specifically recommends updating filter lists and reloading the page.
- Adblock Plus: update ABP Filters and EasyList, update all lists, and turn off Show Acceptable Ads if you do not want that setting to permit some advertising.
Names can differ slightly by extension version. The important checks are that the principal list is enabled, the update completed, and no custom rule is overriding it.

Check allowlists, exceptions, and site permissions
Open the blocker while you are on the Crunchyroll page and inspect the site-specific status. Remove Crunchyroll from any allowlist or trusted-sites list if your goal is to block ads. Also inspect custom filters, disabled-on-this-site switches, and browser-level site permissions. Reload after each change so you know which setting affected the result.

- Say goodbye to batteries: Keep your remote powered for months on a single charge.
If you need Crunchyroll to play and the blocker is confirmed as the cause, a site-specific allowlist entry is usually less disruptive than disabling the blocker for every website. Treat that as a deliberate compatibility choice: it changes protection for Crunchyroll only and can be reversed from the same menu.
Run the temporary-disable test
- Leave the same episode open and note its current symptom.
- Pause or disable the ad blocker for the current site only, if that option exists. If not, disable it briefly in the extension manager.
- Reload the page and start the episode again.
- Restore the blocker immediately after the test if you do not want it disabled generally.
Playback that returns only while the blocker is off is strong evidence of a rule conflict. Update lists again, remove conflicting custom filters, or allowlist Crunchyroll. If the same error remains with the blocker disabled, stop changing blocker rules and continue with the browser, data, network, and device tests.
Rule out other extensions and isolate the browser
Disable extensions in groups, then individually
Pop-up blockers, script blockers, privacy tools, download helpers, and security extensions can affect the same page even when your ad blocker is not the culprit. Disable all nonessential extensions, reload, and test. If playback returns, re-enable extensions one at a time until the failure returns; the last extension enabled is the most useful lead. Do not leave unrelated extensions disabled permanently unless you have decided that the trade-off is acceptable.
Use a private or incognito window
Open a private window, sign in if required, and test the same title. If it works there but not in the normal window, an extension, cookie, cache entry, or saved site permission is likely involved. Private windows do not prove that the blocker is harmless: depending on your browser, extensions may be disabled or restricted there. Use the result as an isolation signal, then reproduce the test by disabling extensions in the normal profile.

Verify that your browser meets Crunchyroll’s stated baseline
Crunchyroll’s browser guidance lists these minimum supported versions in the article accessed on October 18, 2026:
| Browser | Minimum version listed by Crunchyroll |
|---|---|
| Google Chrome | 117 or later |
| Mozilla Firefox | 117 or later |
| Microsoft Edge | 117 or later |
| Apple Safari | 16.1 or later |
Check the browser’s About page, install pending updates, restart the browser, and retry. If updating is not possible, test another browser that meets the listed baseline. Record both the browser name and full version; “Chrome” or “Safari” alone is not enough for a useful support report.
Reset cached data and cookies
Damaged cached files or stale cookies can preserve a failed player state even after you fix the blocker. Use this order so you can stop as soon as the problem is resolved:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Perform a hard refresh of the Crunchyroll page using your browser’s reload command while bypassing the normal cache.
- Close every Crunchyroll tab and restart the browser.
- Clear cached images and files and Crunchyroll cookies or site data from the browser’s privacy settings. Avoid deleting unrelated saved passwords unless you intend to.
- Open a new tab, sign in again, and test the same episode.
Clearing cookies signs you out and can remove saved site preferences, so make sure you know your sign-in details first. If a clean session fixes the problem, re-enable extensions gradually rather than restoring every old setting at once.

Test the network, device, and regional variables
Switch connections
Try the same device on another connection, such as mobile data instead of home Wi‑Fi, or a different Wi‑Fi network. A change in result points toward the original network, DNS filtering, firewall, or congestion rather than a browser rule. If the failure follows both connections, the network is less likely to be the sole cause.
Try another device
Test the account and episode on a second supported device. Playback on the second device narrows the problem to the original browser, extension profile, or operating system. Failure on both devices makes an account, regional-access, or service-side explanation more plausible and gives you a stronger case when contacting support.
Check VPN or proxy involvement
Note whether a VPN or proxy is active, then repeat the test with it disconnected if you can do so safely. Crunchyroll notes that regional access and network conditions can affect playback. Record the region used for each test; do not describe a result from one country as though it applies everywhere.

| Remedy | Diagnostic value | Scope | Reversibility | Compatibility and officialness |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Update filter lists | High for ads that suddenly reappear; moderate for playback failures | Current blocker profile | Easy to reverse by restoring a prior list setting | Uses the blocker’s supported controls |
| Remove a Crunchyroll allowlist entry | High when ads are permitted by an exception | One site | Easy; the exception can be restored | Uses a vendor setting |
| Temporarily disable the blocker | Highest for proving blocker involvement | Current site or browser, depending on the control | Immediate and temporary | Explicitly recommended as a diagnostic by Crunchyroll |
| Disable other extensions | High for extension conflicts | Browser profile | Easy, but requires remembering original states | Standard browser troubleshooting |
| Private-window test | High for separating profile data and extensions | One temporary session | Automatic when the window closes | Supported browser feature |
| Clear cache and cookies | Moderate for stale local state | Selected site data or broader browser data | Partly reversible; cookies and sessions are removed | Standard browser maintenance |
| Switch browser, network, or device | High for locating the failing layer | Broader than one extension | Easy to test, though not a permanent fix | Use a browser meeting Crunchyroll’s stated baseline |
Common mistakes that make troubleshooting harder
- Changing several variables simultaneously: If you update lists, clear cookies, switch browsers, and change networks at once, you cannot tell which action helped. Keep the episode and symptom constant and change one layer at a time.
- Assuming every ad means playback is broken: Ads appearing while video plays call for list and allowlist checks; a black screen or spinner calls for the temporary-disable test first.
- Leaving a blocker disabled globally: Use a current-site pause or site-specific exception when available, and restore the blocker after diagnosis.
- Ignoring browser version: An extension can be configured correctly while an outdated browser still fails the player. Compare the full version with Crunchyroll’s listed baseline.
- Reporting only “it does not work”: Without the title, episode, region, browser, device, exact symptom, and error code, support cannot readily distinguish a player issue from an account or network issue.
Prepare a support request that can be acted on
If the problem survives the blocker, extension, browser, data, network, and device tests, contact Crunchyroll support. Include:
- Device model and operating system version.
- Browser or app name and full version.
- Country or region and whether a VPN or proxy was active.
- The affected show, season, episode, and approximate time of the failure.
- The exact symptom: ads appearing, black screen, buffering, login failure, or video not starting.
- Every error code or message, plus screenshots when they show the state clearly.
- Which tests changed the result, especially whether playback worked with the ad blocker disabled, in a private window, on another browser, on another network, or on another device.
Describe the blocker’s name and whether its lists were updated, but do not omit the tests that ruled it out. This information lets support separate a browser configuration problem from a regional, account, or service condition.
When the fix is to allow Crunchyroll
If the temporary-disable test restores playback and list updates do not, you have a choice rather than a hidden technical failure. Keep the blocker active elsewhere and create a Crunchyroll-only allowlist entry, or leave the blocker disabled for that site. The first option limits the change to one domain; the second is simpler but broader. Recheck the setting after browser or extension updates because site permissions can be reset or renamed.

Frequently asked questions
Should I turn off Acceptable Ads?
If you use AdBlock or Adblock Plus and do not want that feature to permit advertising, turn off the corresponding Acceptable Ads or Show Acceptable Ads setting, update the lists, and reload. This setting addresses ads being permitted; it does not by itself prove or fix a playback conflict.
What information should I record before changing anything?
Record the browser and full version, device, region, show and episode, exact symptom, error code, blocker name, and whether a VPN or proxy is active. Also note the result of the blocker-disabled and private-window tests. Keeping that baseline prevents a vague report and makes each troubleshooting step meaningful.
When should I stop troubleshooting the blocker?
Stop focusing on blocker rules when the same failure occurs with the blocker disabled and persists in a supported browser, after a cache and cookie reset, on another network, or on another device. At that point, provide those results to Crunchyroll support so the issue can be investigated beyond your local extension settings.
