It is not a substitute for encrypted storage, though, and independent reviews report performance that varies by workload. Buy it for convenient access control and attachment—not for high-assurance security or guaranteed class-leading speed.
What the ADATA Urban Tapsafe 2TB offers
The Urban Tapsafe is an external SSD available in 1TB and 2TB capacities. ADATA specifies USB-C and a USB 3.2 Gen 2×2 interface rated at 20 Gbps, with backward compatibility to USB 2.0. Its advertised sequential read and write speeds are up to 1,900 MB/s; those are manufacturer ratings, not a guarantee for every computer, file, or workload. See ADATA’s product specifications.

Tom’s Hardware lists the reviewed 2TB model at 68.68 × 36.18 × 19.18 mm (2.70 × 1.42 × 0.76 inches) and 72.61 g, with a five-year warranty in its review listing. It has a metal case, an integrated clip, and magnetic, replaceable face plates. Warranty terms can vary by region, so check the terms that apply where you buy it. Tom’s Hardware’s August 30, 2026 review gives its tested model’s details.
How phone unlocking works
The drive can be used as a regular external SSD; NFC authentication is an optional access feature. To set it up, ADATA’s guide instructs owners to install the URBAN TAPSAFE app and add the drive. After authentication is enabled, the drive locks when disconnected. Reconnect it, open the app, then tap the phone to the drive to unlock it. Follow the ADATA setup guide for the current setup flow.

The owner can authorize up to nine additional users and assign read-only or read/write access, according to ADATA’s product page. Tom’s Hardware reports that additional users need the app and physical access to the drive, with access granted through a QR-code setup. This is most useful when a drive changes hands among people who need different permissions; it is less compelling if only one person uses it and ordinary device-level access is enough.
What the lock protects—and what it does not
The NFC feature is access control, not file encryption. Tom’s Hardware says the unlocking process does not encrypt or decrypt the stored files, and that ADATA makes no specific hardware-security claim. The reviewer warns that a person able to disassemble the drive might access its data. Treat the lock as a convenience for ordinary privacy and managed sharing, not as protection against a determined attacker. If losing the drive could expose sensitive data, choose storage with clearly documented encryption instead.

Speed depends on the workload and your port
ADATA rates the interface at 20 Gbps and advertises sequential speeds up to 1,900 MB/s. To approach the advertised peak, the computer or other host must have a compatible 20 Gbps USB port; a slower port limits throughput. Tom’s Hardware found that its review unit initially returned inconsistent read benchmarks, then produced more consistent results after a secure erase and reformat. Its assessment was that the drive is adequate for mainstream large-file transfers, but not the fastest in its class.
PCWorld’s September 11, 2026 review also notes variable read speeds with larger data sets and lower sustained-write performance. These are independent reviewers’ observations, not a promise that every unit will behave the same way: results depend on test setup and workload. If your work involves frequent, long writes or large data sets, look beyond the peak sequential rating and compare sustained performance in reviews that resemble your use.

Compatibility to check before buying
ADATA lists Windows, macOS, Linux, and mobile use, while warning that mobile devices need external SSD/OTG storage support and enough power. Phone unlocking adds separate requirements: the phone must support NFC and have access to the companion app. Apple’s listing for the app says iPhone requires iOS 15.6 or later. Check the app listing and your specific phone’s NFC, external-storage, and power support rather than assuming that any USB-C phone will work seamlessly.

Is the 2TB model worth buying?
It is a niche choice. The strongest reasons to choose it are the NFC unlock workflow, read-only or read/write sharing for up to nine additional users, and the clip-and-face-plate design. Those features can be useful for a team or household that physically passes one drive around. If your priority is simply fast portable storage, the lock may add little value, while the reported speed variation makes it worth comparing other drives on sustained performance and price.
Price evidence here is a historical snapshot, not a current quote: Tom’s Hardware listed the 2TB model at $399.99 on Amazon when its August 30, 2026 review was published. Its comparison described the Team Group PD20 2TB as substantially cheaper and the Crucial X10 as a performance alternative. Check current prices and availability before deciding; compare the value of NFC sharing, the host port you can actually use, capacity, size and attachment, warranty terms, security needs, and sustained performance.
