Tom Cruise’s DIGGER is an original 2026 film from director Alejandro G. Iñárritu: a climate-disaster satire in which Cruise plays an oil magnate trying to prove he can save humanity from a catastrophe he unleashed. Its striking combination of scale, satire and a grotesque central character is what makes it worth talking about.

What is Tom Cruise’s Digger about?

Warner Bros. describes the film as the story of the world’s most powerful man racing to prove he can save humanity from a disaster he himself unleashed. The Associated Press identifies Cruise’s character, Digger Rockwell, as an oil magnate and describes the movie as an over-the-top climate-disaster satire. That is a fictional setup, not evidence about real-world climate science.

The premise puts a powerful figure’s self-image at the center of a crisis: Digger wants to be seen as humanity’s savior even as he is tied to the danger. The studio’s official synopsis keeps the details spoiler-light.

Who made it, and who is in the cast?

Alejandro G. Iñárritu directed DIGGER and co-wrote its screenplay with Alexander Dinelaris, Nicolás Giacobone and Sabina Berman. Warner Bros. credits the story to Berman, Iñárritu and Jez Butterworth. The official cast includes Cruise, Riz Ahmed, John Goodman, Sandra Hüller, Michael Stuhlbarg and Jesse Plemons.

The production credits name Iñárritu, Mary Parent and Cruise among the producers. Warner Bros. says the film was shot entirely in VistaVision, a production-format choice that gives its theatrical presentation a distinctive point of interest; it does not, by itself, establish which formats are available at a particular cinema.

Why the pairing of Cruise and Iñárritu stands out

The film brings a director known for ambitious, formally distinctive work together with a star playing a character described as an oil magnate. At a promotional press event reported by the AP, Cruise said of Iñárritu: “He’s never made something like this before, nor have I.” In a prerecorded video at the event, Iñárritu said of Cruise’s work on the role: “The transformation he went through was astonishing.” Those are remarks made in a promotional setting, rather than independent assessments of the film.

Cruise also recalled seeing Iñárritu’s Amores Perros, saying: “What a brilliant film. It was amazing,” and praising its detail and powerful human voice, according to the AP. For viewers, the more useful question is whether the film’s broad satirical approach and Cruise’s portrayal of Digger appeal—not whether the promotional comments predict how the movie will land.

Release dates, runtime and formats

Warner Bros. says DIGGER began its international release on 30 September 2026 and opened in theaters and IMAX across North America on 2 October 2026. These are launch dates by territory, not a guarantee of current local showtimes. Dolby lists a 1 October 2026 date and a 128-minute runtime; the AP also reports a 128-minute runtime. The UK BBFC record lists the cinema release as 2 October and an approximate runtime of 129 minutes. The small runtime difference may reflect rounding or territory-specific records.

Dolby lists Dolby Cinema as an exhibition option, while Warner Bros. confirms an IMAX release. Availability depends on the cinema and location, so check local listings for showtimes and formats.

Ratings and content guidance

The AP reports a US R rating for “pervasive language.” Separately, the UK BBFC’s classification advice includes very strong language, occasional violence, a sustained natural-disaster threat sequence, sexual references, and references to climate change and natural disasters. The BBFC advice is specific to the UK classification and should not be read as the US rating.

Spoiler: a major reveal about the story

Warning: the following paragraph reveals a major plot detail.

The Atlantic’s release-day review says the apparent apocalypse story is revealed as the production of a play called Fossil Fools, with characters acting and rehearsing. That account adds a theatrical layer to the premise and changes how the disaster satire can be read. It is a spoiler from the review, not a detail in Warner Bros.’ official synopsis.
