The safest beginner plan in Acts of Blood is simple: open with a short punch or kick string, wait for the nearest enemy to commit, counter the attack when the timing is clear, convert the stagger into a compact combo, and reposition before the next attacker reaches you. Dodge attacks that are unsafe to counter—especially the chainsaw boss encounter in the current demo—and use a finisher only after checking that no other enemy can interrupt it.

This guide reflects the playable demo and its documented updates through v0.9.7. Eksil Team has announced a Steam launch for December 4, 2026, so exact launch frame data, the complete moveset, and final weapon rules may still change.

The three-minute beginner loop

Think of every encounter as a repeating cycle rather than a single long combo. Your goal is to control who gets to attack next.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Start short. Use a brief punch or kick string to test spacing. Do not mash a long sequence while several enemies are active.
  2. Read one attacker. Keep the nearest threat on screen and watch for the beginning of its attack animation.
  3. Counter a clear commitment. Press the counter during the incoming strike, not several seconds before it. A successful counter creates the stagger you need.
  4. Convert, then leave. Spend the stagger on a compact combo or a safe finisher, then move so the next attacker remains visible.
  5. Dodge unsafe attacks. If the attack is difficult or unsafe to counter, use a dodge to pass the threat or create a better angle. The demo specifically teaches this against the chainsaw boss.
  6. Check the room before finishing. A finisher is a commitment. Scan for another enemy about to hit you before you start one.

This loop is more reliable than trying to win by holding counter or repeating one maximum-length string. The current patch history improved hit reactions, enemy stagger behavior, and dodge/counter responsiveness, but the game still rewards deliberate timing.

How to parry and counter in Acts of Blood

Wait for the attack to begin

Countering is a timing punish, not a defensive button to hold continuously. Let the enemy visibly begin its attack, then press counter during the incoming strike. Pressing too early usually produces no reward because the opponent has not committed yet; pressing after the hit lands is simply late.

Turn a successful counter into damage

A counter is valuable because it creates a short stagger window. Immediately choose a compact punch or kick sequence, or use a finisher if the target is staggered or downed and the surrounding space is safe. Do not stand in place admiring the counter animation: another enemy may already be approaching from outside your view.

If the counter appears not to work

First verify that you are playing the current demo build and that the counter action is actually bound. The official v0.9.7 notes record a fix for an unresponsive counter button, so an old build can behave differently from the patched demo.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

There is also an input conflict worth checking. In older demo behavior, binding counter or parry to the right mouse button could interfere with weapon pickup, because the same input context was used while interacting with props. Assign weapon or interact to a separate binding if an object refuses to equip. This is an input issue, not evidence that the weapon is unavailable.

When to dodge instead of counter

Use the dodge to change the lane

Dodge when several enemies are converging, when a counter window is unclear, or when backing away would leave an attacker behind you. If there is room, dodge through or past the threat rather than retreating in a straight line. Passing the attacker can put the group in front of you, which makes the next commitment easier to read.

The chainsaw boss rule

For the chainsaw boss in the current demo, the practical rule is to dodge rather than counter. Wait for the boss to finish its dangerous motion, then punish only during the safe opening. Do not assume that a successful counter against ordinary enemies transfers to this encounter.

What is not published

No cited material publishes exact dodge invulnerability frames. Treat dodge timing as an animation-and-spacing skill, not as a guaranteed number of invulnerable frames. If a dodge fails, review whether you moved into the attack path, dodged too early, or had no room to clear the hit.

What is the best beginner combo?

There is no authoritative launch combo chart yet, so the best beginner combo is a short, repeatable conversion after a stagger. The demo gives you two families to practice:

  • Punch strings: use a compact sequence when you are already close and want a predictable rhythm.
  • Kick strings: switch to kicks when you need a different height or cadence, or when an opponent begins avoiding your repeated punch timing.

The v0.9.7 update added two punch combo-set moves and one kick combo-set move. Those additions make it worthwhile to learn both families instead of committing all upgrades to one repeated string.

A safe combo pattern

  1. Begin with one or two attacks while watching the nearest enemy.
  2. Counter the committed attack.
  3. Use the shortest combo that reliably reaches the staggered target.
  4. Stop before the animation carries you into another enemy, then reposition.

This pattern deliberately leaves damage on the table in exchange for awareness. Extend the sequence only when the rest of the group is controlled, pushed away, or visibly recovering.

Finishers: powerful, but never automatic

Finishers should be reserved for a staggered or downed target. They convert a favorable state into large damage or a cinematic takedown, but the animation can hold you in place. Before activating one, check the edges of the screen and listen for another enemy’s approach.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The v0.9.7 patch added new finisher moves and experimental cinematic finishers. Because the available set can depend on your current demo build and hub progression, practice recognizing the target state rather than memorizing a single animation. If another enemy is active and close, a short combo is usually safer than a long finisher.

How to control crowds

Use Push to open a lane

The current demo includes a dedicated push action for crowd control: Q on keyboard or left stick on a controller, according to the official notes. Push when enemies are compressing your space. Your immediate objective is not to knock out everyone; it is to create enough distance that the group stays in one readable lane.

  1. Push the closest cluster away from your position.
  2. Turn toward the most immediate threat rather than the enemy with the lowest health.
  3. Keep moving so the group remains in front of you.
  4. Counter the next clear attack, then convert the stagger.

If you let enemies surround you, a perfect counter against one attacker may still leave you exposed to another. Space management therefore comes before damage optimization.

Ranged enemies and rushers

In arena waves, interrupt a gunner or a rushing enemy with a weapon or an environmental object when necessary. Breaking the firing line is the priority. Once the ranged threat is interrupted, return to hand-to-hand combat so enemy commitments and counter timing remain readable instead of juggling multiple distant threats.

Do not spend crowd control on a cinematic

A long finisher can be correct against an isolated target and disastrous while another enemy is active. Use Push first, confirm that the group is not about to reach you, and only then commit to the animation.

Rage, weapons, and boss damage

Spend rage on a problem, not on a victory lap

The demo walkthrough describes rage as a burst-damage resource that fills while you maintain a hit chain. Save it for an elite enemy, a gunner problem, or a boss punish window. Spending rage on an encounter you have already controlled can leave you without a tool when the next wave demands immediate damage.

What weapons are good for

Weapons and environmental objects can provide stagger or stopping power, particularly when you need to interrupt a ranged enemy or a fast rusher. Public notes do not establish the final weapon classes, ammunition rules, reload timing, or durability. Use weapons tactically for an opening rather than planning a complete weapon economy around the demo.

A boss decision framework

Situation Preferred action Reason
Ordinary enemy begins a readable attack Counter, then short combo Converts a clear commitment into stagger damage.
Attack has an unclear or unsafe counter window Dodge through or past it Preserves health and improves positioning.
Chainsaw boss in the current demo Dodge, then punish the safe opening The demo walkthrough specifically advises against countering this encounter.
Elite, gunner, or boss punish window Consider rage Rage is a burst resource; these targets justify its cost.

Where to spend skill points

Open the skill tree in the apartment hub between outings. The current demo moved skill-tree access to the hub, so do not look for purchases inside a mission.

For a first run, a practical order is:

  1. Survivability or health. Extra margin gives you more chances to learn counter and dodge timing.
  2. Attack speed or reliable combo options. Faster or more dependable basic strings make stagger conversions easier.
  3. Additional finishers. Add finisher variety after your neutral game is stable.

This is a beginner-friendly ordering, not an officially declared optimal build. If you are consistently losing to crowd pressure, move a survivability choice earlier; if you are surviving but failing to convert staggers, prioritize a combo option instead.

Counter, dodge, push, or weapon: choosing the right tool

Tool Safety Space control Damage conversion Best use
Counter High when the timing is clear; poor when held or guessed Low by itself Creates a stagger for a short combo or finisher Readable attacks from the nearest threat
Dodge Protects you from attacks that are unsafe to counter High when you pass through or around an enemy Creates a punish angle rather than direct damage Chainsaw boss, unclear timings, crowded lanes
Push Prevents compression but does not replace attack timing Directly opens a lane Sets up later counters and combos Enemies surrounding you
Weapon or object Can interrupt a dangerous target Useful for breaking a firing line Provides stagger or stopping power Gunners and rushers in arena waves
Finisher Low while the animation is committed None during the animation High against a staggered or downed target Safe conversion after checking the room
Rage Consumes a limited burst resource None by itself Large burst damage Elites, gunner problems, and boss openings

Patch changes that affect beginner timing

Version Documented changes Practical effect
v0.9.5, December 27, 2025 Two new arena levels; heavier attack feel; brute grapples can be escaped with repeated counter presses; improved hit reactions, enemy stagger, boss pacing and phase transitions, enemy waves, AI, ranged behavior, and dodge/counter response; skill tree moved to the hub. Relearn spacing and stagger timing if you played an earlier build, and visit the hub for upgrades.
v0.9.7, April 5, 2026 New and improved cinematic finishers, new finisher moves, two punch combo-set moves, one kick combo-set move, an elite enemy, a more grounded combat feel, a counter-button fix, and an additional enemy-spawn fix. Practice both punch and kick families, confirm your counter binding, and expect new finisher options.

A practice routine for your first demo run

Apartment hub

Spend points before leaving, then choose one survivability or health improvement if available. Review your counter and interact bindings so the counter input is not also responsible for picking up props.

Warehouse story stage

Use the first safe group to rehearse the loop: one short string, one observed commitment, one counter, one compact conversion, and a reposition. Avoid testing a new long combo while several enemies are active.

Arena waves

Practice Push whenever the group starts to wrap around you. Identify the ranged threat, interrupt it with a weapon or object if necessary, and then return to hand-to-hand attacks. Save rage for an elite or a wave where a gunner is creating an immediate problem.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Boss encounter

Against the chainsaw boss, stop looking for a counter prompt. Dodge the dangerous motion, wait for the safe opening, and punish briefly. The goal is consistent survival, not a cinematic finish on every opportunity.

Troubleshooting common failures

“My parry does nothing.”

  • Confirm the attack has started before pressing counter.
  • Check that the counter action is bound to the intended button.
  • Update to a build containing the v0.9.7 counter-button fix.
  • Do not use a right-click counter binding if it prevents nearby props from being picked up; assign a separate interact input.

“I win one exchange, then get hit from behind.”

Your conversion is too long or your camera is not keeping the group in one lane. Use Push, shorten the combo, and reposition immediately after the stagger.

“The chainsaw boss ignores my counter.”

That is the wrong matchup for the demo rule. Dodge the attack and punish during the opening identified by its recovery animation.

“My finisher keeps getting interrupted.”

You are committing before the room is safe. Use the finisher only on a staggered or downed target after checking for another active attacker. If the group is close, use a short combo or Push instead.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

“Ranged enemies decide every arena wave.”

Break the firing line first with a weapon or environmental object, then face the remaining enemies. Do not stay locked into a long hand-to-hand animation while a gunner has a clear shot.

What is confirmed—and what is still subject to change

Eksil Team announced on Steam on October 14, 2026: “Acts of Blood launches on Steam on December 4, 2026!” The playable evidence available before that date is the demo, including an apartment hub, a warehouse story stage, and replayable arena modes.

The documented material does not provide independently published gameplay statistics, authoritative frame-data tables, a complete launch combo chart, exact dodge invulnerability values, or final weapon classes, ammunition, reload, and durability rules. Use the timing principles in this guide as a practical demo method, not as a promise that every value will remain unchanged at launch.
