Xbox has handed development of the next Halo title to a new, purpose-built Activision team, but it has not announced that game’s PC release, launch date, or PC features. That makes the move a potential opportunity for PC players—not a confirmed win. The concrete PC news so far belongs to a separate game, Halo: Campaign Evolved.
What did Activision announce about Halo?
In an employee message published on Xbox Wire on September 22, 2026, Xbox said Activision will develop the next Halo title through a new team purpose-built for the project and separate from ongoing Call of Duty development and plans. The announcement concerns who will make the next game; it does not disclose a title, release date, engine, platforms, or gameplay details. Xbox’s September 22 announcement is the primary source for the handoff.

Xbox also said a small Halo Studios team will continue supporting the community and games already in market. It reported 268 role eliminations across Halo Studios, other first-party studios, and Xbox Game Studios management and central functions. That is a company-wide figure across those areas, not 268 Halo Studios layoffs.
Will the next Halo game come to PC?
The cited handoff announcement does not confirm PC availability. It also provides no PC-specific commitments on launch timing, keyboard-and-mouse controls, graphics options, performance, cross-play, or feature parity. Until Xbox or the developers announce those details, PC players cannot treat a release or particular features as confirmed.

A purpose-built team separate from Call of Duty’s ongoing work could give the next Halo project focused development resources. That is a reasonable possibility, not evidence of the team’s size, experience, technical plans, or eventual results. The announcement describes a staffing structure, not a PC-first strategy.
Why could the move matter to PC players?
A focused team may help the project
Activision is assembling a team specifically for the next Halo title, according to Xbox’s announcement and Activision President Rob Kostich’s statement quoted by GamesRadar. Kostich said the goal is to make the greatest Halo game ever while remaining true to what players love about the series. That is an ambition, not a guarantee of quality, platform support, or a particular PC experience.
Halo’s identity still needs to come through
PC Gamer’s Morgan Park argues that Halo Infinite distinguished itself from Call of Duty through slower pacing, mirrored loadouts, power weapons, and vertically designed maps. Those are the writer’s observations, not specifications for the next game. They help explain why some fans may care about whether Activision preserves Halo’s distinct feel rather than simply applying a different studio’s familiar formula. PC Gamer’s analysis raises that concern; it does not report a confirmed PC benefit.

Halo Studios remains involved, but the boundaries are unclear
Xbox says Halo Studios will support the community and games already in market while Activision’s new team develops the next title. The announcement does not specify who will approve creative decisions, how the teams will divide responsibilities, or how much Halo Studios will contribute to the new game. Its continued presence is a continuity signal, but not a disclosed governance plan.

What PC players can confirm today: Halo: Campaign Evolved
Halo: Campaign Evolved is a separate, already-announced game; its features should not be attributed to the future Activision-led title. In its June 7, 2026 announcement, Xbox gave July 28, 2026 as the launch date, named Windows PC and Steam among its platforms, and said it supports cross-play and cross-progression across Xbox Series X|S, Windows PC, Steam, and PlayStation 5. See Xbox’s Campaign Evolved announcement for those product details.
That is tangible PC news for Campaign Evolved, not proof that the next Halo game will launch on PC or share its cross-play and cross-progression support. The two announcements cover different projects and answer different questions.
What to watch for before calling it a PC win
- Platforms and launch timing: An official platform list and release date for the Activision-led game.
- PC implementation: Details on input support, graphics settings, performance targets, and whether PC receives the same content and updates as consoles.
- Online play: Confirmation of cross-play, cross-progression, and how those features work across platforms.
- Halo’s creative direction: Gameplay and design details that show how the team intends to preserve the qualities players associate with Halo.
- Delivery, not just intent: Kostich’s stated goal sets an aspiration; the game’s eventual execution will determine whether it is met.
Until those announcements arrive, the most accurate verdict is conditional: Activision’s dedicated team could create an opportunity for a strong PC release, but Xbox has not yet promised one.
