The companies have launched a co-marketing campaign, and Nintendo views a mainstream first-person shooter as a way to broaden its audience. The practical test is Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4, which is scheduled for Nintendo Switch 2 on October 23, 2026, with a native build, campaign, multiplayer, DMZ and announced crossplay support.
What Activision means by Nintendo being “all in”
Tyler Bahl, Activision’s chief marketing officer, described the relationship as a rebuild rather than a single-platform release. “We’re rebuilding this relationship. Nintendo has been all in,” he said, pointing to a co-marketing campaign already launched between the companies. His comments indicate active cooperation on positioning and promotion, not merely Nintendo allowing Activision to publish a game on Switch 2.

Bahl also presented Switch 2 as a complementary way to play. He said he owns the console and would take it on a flight to London to play Modern Warfare 4, calling that an “awesome companion experience.” The implication is that Activision wants the Switch 2 edition to fit alongside versions played on other systems, particularly for portable sessions.

Why Nintendo wants to “age up” its customer
“Age up their customer” is Bahl’s description of Nintendo’s stated strategy, not a published demographic measurement. He said Nintendo wants a broader spectrum of players and sees a first-person shooter as part of that expansion. He also said Nintendo’s console sales had grown to a point and then stagnated, arguing that a wider software offering could extend the platform’s appeal.

No figure in the available statements quantifies Nintendo’s customer age, the alleged stagnation or expected Call of Duty sales. The phrase should therefore be read as a qualitative business rationale: Nintendo wants to add a major, traditionally mature-audience genre to its mix rather than as evidence of a specific age target or sales forecast.
Modern Warfare 4 on Switch 2: what is confirmed
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 Nintendo Switch 2 is scheduled to launch on October 23, 2026. TechRadar reports that the game skips PlayStation 4 and Xbox One and launches on current-generation systems, making it the first Call of Duty entry to launch natively on Nintendo Switch 2.

| Feature | What has been announced |
|---|---|
| Release date | October 23, 2026 |
| Switch platform | Nintendo Switch 2, with native development |
| Modes at launch | Full campaign, multiplayer and DMZ extraction mode |
| Core multiplayer content | 12 new 6v6 maps at launch |
| Older consoles | PlayStation 4 and Xbox One are skipped, according to TechRadar |
| Crossplay | Supported between Switch 2 and other platforms in the current plan; final launch mix remains subject to change |
The announced package matters because it is not described as a reduced spin-off. Campaign, competitive multiplayer and DMZ are all included, alongside 12 new core six-versus-six maps at launch. Exact resolution, frame-rate targets, storage requirements, edition names and pricing for the Switch 2 version were not established in the cited coverage, so those details should be checked in the regional retailer and platform listings when they appear.
How the native Switch 2 version is being developed
GamesRadar reports that Infinity Ward and Digital Legends are developing the Switch 2 edition natively. That means the game is being built for the hardware rather than treated solely as an older version streamed or emulated through a compatibility layer.

Infinity Ward co-studio head Jack O’Hara characterized the work positively: “It’s been smooth, to be honest. Things just work.” He also said, “Right now we support crossplay between Switch 2 and the rest of the platforms. But we’ll see at launch exactly where the mix ends up.”
That wording confirms the current development plan but leaves a launch-status caveat. Crossplay is presently supported between Switch 2 and the other platforms, yet Activision and the studios may adjust the final platform mix, matchmaking pool or scope before October 23. Players should treat crossplay as announced support, not a guarantee that every platform will share every mode at launch.

Why Call of Duty is returning after the Wii U
The last Call of Duty release on Nintendo hardware was Call of Duty: Ghosts on Wii U in 2013, according to GamesRadar’s historical account. The long gap is being addressed through a 10-year agreement involving Microsoft, Nintendo and Activision. GamesRadar reports that the agreement secured Call of Duty releases on Nintendo platforms and required “full feature and content parity” with other versions.

The commitment formed part of the regulatory path for Microsoft’s acquisition of Activision Blizzard. In practical terms, the feature-parity language explains why the Switch 2 project is being presented as a full release with the major launch modes rather than a substantially trimmed Nintendo-exclusive edition.

What remains unknown before release
- Final crossplay configuration: O’Hara’s statement supports crossplay now, but the exact launch mix can still change.
- Technical specifications: Official Switch 2 resolution, frame-rate targets, download size and performance modes were not stated in the cited reports.
- Commercial details: The exact physical edition, regional pricing, retailer availability and any upgrade or packaging policy require confirmation from official listings.
- Audience impact: Nintendo’s “age up” explanation is strategic language, not a published demographic or sales forecast.
For buyers, the key checkpoint is the final regional store or retailer page: verify that it identifies the Nintendo Switch 2 edition, lists the October 23, 2026 release date and specifies whether the product is physical, digital or a bundle.
What this signals for Nintendo and Activision
Activision’s comments frame Modern Warfare 4 as the first concrete result of a broader Nintendo relationship. Nintendo gains a major shooter intended to widen its software range, while Activision gains a portable platform and a contractual route for future releases. Bahl also mentioned that the relationship could develop through future titles such as Spyro, but no specific Switch 2 Spyro release was announced in these statements.
