Why Activision thinks GTA 6 can help Call of Duty
Tyler Bahl, Activision’s chief marketing officer, describes GTA 6 as a potential expansion of the overall console audience. His argument is that people who have stopped using an Xbox or PlayStation may return for GTA 6, generating more activity on console dashboards and more attention from games media. Some of those returning players could also notice, buy or resume Call of Duty.

“More people coming in to the dashboards, more people taking the dust off their Xbox or PlayStation and starting to play again, and loading up that experience is going to be more eyeballs for us, overall,” Bahl told VGC. He separately told Dexerto that “if more people are talking about games, if there’s more press around it, that’s going to be good for everybody, not just us.”

The proposed benefit is therefore indirect. Activision is not claiming that GTA 6 players will automatically switch to Call of Duty; it is arguing that a larger, busier gaming market can create more opportunities for discovery and re-engagement.

The social advantage Activision says Call of Duty retains
Bahl says Call of Duty’s durability comes from its friend network rather than from any single annual campaign. “What makes Call of Duty last the test of time, I think, is the community and the social experience. The idea of, being able to play with your friends, right?” he said.
He summarized the company’s research as a simple motivation: “It’s actually ‘my friends are there’, right? ‘I’m able to spend time with my friends.’” Call of Duty supports cross-platform play across PC, Xbox and PlayStation, and VGC reports that the series is newly supported on Nintendo’s Switch 2. That reach could help it retain players who divide their time among several games.
GTA 6’s launch is expected to be centered first on its story experience. Its planned online mode could become a more direct rival later, because persistent social and competitive play competes for the same friend groups and evening hours that Call of Duty depends on. The timing and features of that online mode remain subject to change.

Modern Warfare 4 is launching before GTA 6
VGC and Dexerto report that Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 will launch on October 23, 2026, while the reported GTA 6 launch date is November 19, 2026. The Call of Duty release is therefore just under a month earlier.
That schedule explains the “moving out of the way” part of the story. Call of Duty is leaving its usual November position instead of launching directly against GTA 6. GTA BOOM describes the decision as a practical contrast to Bahl’s rising-tide argument: Activision publicly says a huge release can help everyone, but its calendar still places Modern Warfare 4 ahead of the biggest expected launch of the year.

What the available numbers show—and do not show
Circana data cited by VGC put purchase intent for Modern Warfare 4 at 15% among the broad US console and PC player base in August 2026. The comparable figure for The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time remake was 10.4%. Purchase intent is a survey measure, not a sales forecast, and it does not reveal how many people will ultimately buy either game.

Ampere figures reported by VGC estimate roughly 40 million monthly Call of Duty players in 2024, declining to the mid-20 millions in 2026. VGC cautions that its underlying series view is incomplete: Modern Warfare 2 and Modern Warfare 3 data is missing after July 2025, and Black Ops 6 data is missing after July 2026. Those gaps mean the trend should not be treated as a complete, directly comparable count of every Call of Duty player.

The strongest case for a lift
GTA 6 can reactivate dormant hardware
A blockbuster can prompt people to update a console, reconnect with friends and browse other games after a long absence. If those players already own Call of Duty or have friends who play it, the reactivation path Bahl describes is plausible.

Call of Duty is built around group routines
Story-driven games often command intense individual attention at launch. Call of Duty’s multiplayer value is more repeatable: friends can meet across platforms, maintain a shared routine and return for short sessions. That social pattern could let it coexist with a major single-player release.
Earlier timing gives Modern Warfare 4 a head start
Launching on October 23 gives Modern Warfare 4 several weeks to sell copies, establish squads and build seasonal momentum before GTA 6 arrives. Players who have already invested time in its progression may be less likely to abandon it completely in November.
The strongest case for cannibalisation
Launch attention and leisure time are finite
GTA BOOM identifies the central counterargument: players have limited hours and limited launch budgets. A person who spends November exploring GTA 6 may play fewer Call of Duty matches, delay a purchase or reduce spending on post-launch content even if both games are popular.

GTA 6 could become a social platform
The initial story campaign is not the only consideration. If GTA 6’s planned online component develops into a large, persistent multiplayer community, it could compete directly with Call of Duty for friend-group time rather than merely bringing people back to gaming.
Scheduling reveals a risk assessment
Moving Modern Warfare 4 ahead of GTA 6 is itself evidence that Activision sees a concentrated launch collision as risky. The company may still expect a larger gaming audience overall while judging that Call of Duty should secure its sales and player base before GTA 6 dominates the news cycle.
Can players play both games around launch?
Yes. Based on the reported dates, players can start Modern Warfare 4 on October 23, 2026, then move to GTA 6 on November 19. The practical issue is not technical compatibility but time: maintaining progress, seasonal events and a regular friend group in both games may require choosing which one gets priority during the first weeks.
Players who value organized multiplayer sessions may find it easier to establish a Call of Duty routine before November and then schedule GTA 6 around it. Those primarily interested in GTA 6’s launch experience should expect its release to command most of their attention initially.
