Activision has confirmed that a future Call of Duty game will launch a completely new sub‑franchise, and says groundwork is already underway. The company has not announced the name, setting, developer, release year or platforms, leaving reports of a 2027 launch, a modern setting and hand-to-hand combat firmly in rumor territory.
What Activision actually confirmed
On October 15, 2026, Activision chief marketing officer Tyler Bahl told The Game Business: “We’ve already stated that a future title is going to be a new sub-franchise and we’ve already laid the groundwork.” A same-day report from Insider Gaming described the project as a brand-new branch of the series whose development has already started.

That is the full scope of the announcement. Activision has not supplied a title, setting, lead studio, launch window or platform list. Any description that presents those details as official is getting ahead of the company’s statement.

Why Activision is creating another branch
Bahl framed the decision as a response to audience fatigue with consecutive entries in established series. The recent sequence has been Modern Warfare 2 (2022), Modern Warfare 3 (2023), Black Ops 6 (2024) and Black Ops 7 (2025). “It was not something that our community was looking for. They wanted something fresh,” Bahl said.

The official announcement for Black Ops 7 called it the first consecutive release within that sub‑franchise. That context helps explain why Activision is discussing a different identity rather than simply continuing the alternating Modern Warfare and Black Ops pattern.
Recent performance adds pressure
The Game Business reported that Black Ops 7 had a 50% European launch decline compared with the previous year’s title. In the United States it finished No. 5 in the 2026 year-end ranking, described as the franchise’s lowest position since 2008’s World at War.

Ampere Analysis data cited by The Game Business put the series at around 40 million monthly players in 2024 and in the mid-20 millions in 2026. The later figure is incomplete: data was unavailable for Modern Warfare 2 and Modern Warfare 3 after July 2025, and for Black Ops 6 after July 2026, so the numbers should not be treated as a perfectly like-for-like measurement.

Bahl also cited Activision’s broader scale: about 4,500 employees, 100 million free-to-play players, 500 million units sold and 1 billion mobile downloads. Those figures show why a new branch could refresh the brand without abandoning its existing audience.

Is the next Call of Duty really coming in 2027?
Not on the evidence currently available. A 2027 release has appeared in reports, alongside claims about a modern-era setting and martial-arts or close-quarters systems. None of those details has been confirmed by Activision. Until the publisher names the project and provides a schedule, 2027 should be treated as a reported possibility rather than a release date.
The phrase “future title” also leaves the project’s position in the annual release cycle unclear. Activision could announce more than one game or change its timing; the confirmation establishes intent and early work, not a locked calendar.

What setting and studio will make it?
There is no reliable public answer yet. Activision has not named a developer, and it has not said whether the new sub‑franchise will use a historical, modern, futuristic or fictional setting. Martial-arts claims are similarly unverified. They may reflect legitimate reporting, concept work or speculation, but they are not part of the confirmed announcement.
That uncertainty is important for interpreting leaks. Fan posts and anonymous claims can suggest possibilities, but they cannot establish the game’s studio, mechanics or story. The first dependable answers should come from an Activision announcement, a named developer or formal platform listings.

Modern Warfare 4 is the immediate release
The current release context is a separate project. The Game Business reports that Modern Warfare 4 is scheduled for October 23, 2026, on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, PC and Nintendo Switch 2. Bahl characterized it as a return to a grounded military shooter and said Activision is judging success by whether fans enjoy the game, not by a predetermined sales number.
The Switch 2 version is part of Activision’s renewed relationship with Nintendo and a co-marketing campaign. That partnership confirms nothing about the unnamed sub‑franchise’s eventual hardware support; its platforms remain unknown.
Does this mean the end of Modern Warfare or Black Ops?
No. Activision has announced a new branch, not the cancellation of either established sub‑franchise. Modern Warfare 4 demonstrates that the company is still investing in its existing military-shooter identity, while the new project is intended to provide a different option when the publisher believes the audience wants a change.
