For demanding games played for an hour or more, a phone with integrated active cooling is generally the better choice. A fan can keep exporting heat after a passive vapor chamber has spread heat through the chassis and reached the practical limits of the phone’s surface area and ambient airflow. Vapor-chamber-only phones remain the better fit when silence, a slimmer everyday design and short sessions matter more than maximum sustained performance. Hybrid designs, such as a phone that combines a fan, liquid cooling and a vapor chamber, attempt to deliver both benefits.
There is no trustworthy universal FPS percentage that proves active cooling always wins. Results depend on the game, system-on-chip, graphics settings, room temperature, brightness, battery level and test method. The useful comparison is sustained performance over a complete session, not a short benchmark burst.

What the two cooling approaches do
Vapor chambers spread heat without moving parts
A vapor chamber is a sealed, passive heat spreader. When the processor heats up, the chamber moves that heat across a larger area of the phone. The chassis, display frame and surrounding air then release it. Because there is no fan, the system is silent and has no moving mechanical parts.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →That silence and simplicity have limits. Heat can only leave through the phone’s available surface area and the surrounding air. A hot room, a case that traps heat or a long period of maximum processor load reduces the temperature difference that drives heat away. Once the chamber and chassis are carrying as much heat as they can reject under those conditions, the processor may reduce its clock speed to control temperature. The chamber still works; it simply cannot create additional heat-rejection capacity on its own.

Active cooling adds forced airflow
Active cooling adds a fan that moves air through or across the phone’s thermal path. Forced airflow can continue carrying heat away when passive spreading alone is no longer enough. The trade-off is fan noise, additional power consumption, a thicker gaming-oriented design and more mechanical parts.
Some systems add more than a fan. REDMAGIC’s 11S Pro combines a 24,000 RPM turbo fan, liquid cooling, Liquid Metal 3.0 and a 13,116 mm² vapor chamber. The company describes this arrangement as being designed to maintain peak frequencies during sustained loads. The fan provides airflow, while the liquid and vapor-chamber components distribute heat before it reaches the phone’s exterior.
External active coolers use the phone’s thermal interface
An external cooler can add active cooling to a phone that has only passive internal cooling. ASUS’s AeroActive Cooler uses a fan and a thermoelectric cooling element that contacts the phone’s cooling conductor. The accessory is a separate device, so it adds bulk and cost only when you use it, rather than making every day of phone use thicker and noisier.
Compatibility matters. An external cooler must contact the intended thermal area, attach securely without blocking controls or cameras and have support for the specific phone model. Its result also depends on the phone’s internal heat path: cooling the back surface cannot fully compensate for a poor connection between the processor and that surface.
Why sustained performance matters more than a peak score
A phone can produce an excellent frame rate for the first few minutes and still perform poorly over a long session. As heat accumulates, the operating system and processor manage temperature by lowering frequencies, changing GPU behavior or reducing power. The resulting frame rate may become less consistent even if the initial benchmark number looked impressive.
Active cooling has its clearest advantage in this sustained-load scenario. A fan continues moving heat out of the device while the game keeps stressing the processor and graphics hardware. A passive vapor chamber can be entirely adequate for a short match, yet have less headroom after repeated matches at high brightness and a high refresh rate.
This is an engineering advantage, not a guaranteed frame-rate lead in every title. A game may be limited by its own frame-rate cap, network latency, software optimization or the phone’s GPU rather than temperature. A phone with a more efficient chip can also outperform a heavily cooled phone in a particular game. Compare measurements made on the same game, settings and duration whenever possible.

What the available test results actually show
REDMAGIC 11 Air stress-test result
TechRadar reported a 95% stability score for the RedMagic 11 Air in the 3DMark Solar Bay Stress Test. That phone combines a dedicated fan with a vapor chamber. The result is useful evidence that the model maintained a high proportion of its initial performance in that test configuration, but it is not a universal statistic for every active-cooling phone or a direct active-versus-passive comparison.
3DMark Solar Bay is a specific workload. It does not reproduce every game, room temperature or user setting. Treat the 95% figure as a model-and-test result, not as a promise that a fan will produce 95% stability in your favorite game.
Why there is no universal percentage advantage
Published phone tests are not standardized enough to support a single claim such as “active cooling is 20% faster.” Phones differ in system-on-chip, thermal design, software limits, battery state, case use, ambient temperature and test length. Even two tests of the same phone can diverge if one uses a cooler room or a lower brightness level.
For a meaningful comparison, record the same game, graphics preset, frame-rate target, session length and room conditions. Look at the frame-rate curve and temperature over time, not only the opening average. A stable result after 30 to 60 minutes tells you more about long gaming than a one-minute peak.

When an integrated fan is worth it
You regularly play for an hour or more
Long sessions give heat time to accumulate. If your routine includes several consecutive matches, open-world games with high graphics settings or extended emulation, continuous airflow provides useful thermal headroom. The benefit is greatest when you care about keeping clocks and frame pacing steady late in the session rather than winning a short benchmark.
You use high brightness and high frame-rate settings
A bright display and a high refresh-rate target increase the phone’s workload and power use. Combined with a demanding game, that makes sustained heat more likely. Active cooling is most defensible when these settings are part of your normal use, not only an occasional experiment.
You run emulators or other sustained workloads
Emulation can keep CPU and GPU resources busy for long periods and may not behave like a short, capped mobile game. The same applies to streaming, recording gameplay while playing or using demanding graphics modes. A fan can reduce the chance that accumulated heat will force a large performance reduction.

You want the highest sustained clocks
Integrated active cooling is aimed at preserving performance under a continuous load. Choose it with the expectation of a gaming-first design: more audible operation, a larger body, more power consumption and additional mechanical parts are part of the exchange.
When a vapor-chamber phone is the better choice
Your sessions are short or intermittent
For a few matches followed by a long break, a well-designed passive system may never reach its thermal limit. You get silent operation without carrying a fan for a problem you rarely encounter.
You want a quieter, simpler everyday phone
Passive cooling has no fan bearing, fan grille or moving mechanism to operate. It suits people who also prioritize camera use, general software features, pocket comfort and a clean design. The absence of a fan does not mean the phone cannot game; it means its thermal behavior relies on heat spreading and chassis dissipation.
You value simpler sealing and less maintenance
A passive design is easier to keep free of moving-part concerns. An integrated fan introduces an airflow path and mechanical components that can collect dust or require more care. The precise ingress-protection rating still depends on the individual phone, so check the manufacturer’s specification rather than assuming that either design is water-resistant.
You may add cooling only occasionally
A compatible external cooler lets a passive phone gain active assistance during tournaments or unusually long sessions. You avoid the permanent thickness and noise of an internal fan, but you must buy, carry and attach the accessory when needed.

How to decide between the two
- Estimate your real session length. If most sessions are under about 30 minutes, passive cooling is often sufficient. If you routinely play for an hour or more without a break, put sustained performance near the top of the list.
- Identify your heaviest workload. Note whether you play graphically demanding games, use emulators, stream or record, and run maximum brightness and frame-rate settings. The more continuous the load, the more an active system can help.
- Set your noise tolerance. A fan is audible, particularly at higher speed. If you play in a quiet room, on public transport or beside another person, the noise may matter more than a modest late-session performance gain.
- Check the complete phone design. Compare the system-on-chip, display, battery, weight, grip, software controls and thermal hardware together. Cooling cannot make an underpowered chip faster than a stronger one in every game.
- Check accessory support before choosing passive cooling. Confirm that the intended external cooler is compatible, has a suitable contact point and will not interfere with your case, camera or controls.
- Compare sustained measurements, not marketing language alone. Prefer tests that disclose game, settings, duration, ambient conditions and whether a case was used. Look for frame-rate stability, surface and SoC temperature, noise and battery impact.
What to compare in a buying table
| Factor | Integrated active cooling | Vapor-chamber-only cooling | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|---|
| Long-session performance | Generally stronger thermal headroom because airflow continues removing heat. | Can be sufficient, but heat rejection is bounded by chassis area and ambient conditions. | Use this row for multi-hour gaming and emulation. |
| Short-session performance | May offer little visible benefit if the session ends before heat builds up. | Often adequate for brief matches. | Do not pay for a fan you will rarely need. |
| Noise | Fan noise varies with speed and game load. | Silent cooling hardware. | Important in shared or quiet spaces. |
| Power use | The fan and any thermoelectric component consume additional power. | No fan power draw. | Consider battery life away from a charger. |
| Size and complexity | Usually thicker and mechanically more complex. | Simpler internal construction and a cleaner exterior design. | Affects pocket comfort, durability considerations and ergonomics. |
| Upgrade path | Cooling is built in. | A compatible external cooler can add active assistance later. | Check accessory cost and compatibility before relying on this option. |
| Evidence quality | Look for sustained game or stress-test data; there is no universal FPS multiplier. | Use the same conditions and duration when comparing. | Different test methods can reverse apparent rankings. |
Are vapor chambers enough for long gaming sessions?
They can be, depending on the phone and workload. A large vapor chamber, efficient processor, sensible power limits and a cooler room may sustain a demanding game without severe throttling. A smaller chamber, hot ambient conditions, a restrictive case and maximum brightness can produce a different result.
The right question is not whether vapor chambers “work,” but whether the specific phone maintains acceptable frame pacing for your session. Check long-run tests and user controls such as performance modes, frame-rate limits and bypass charging. If independent long-session data is unavailable, assume that the phone’s passive design prioritizes silence and simplicity rather than unlimited peak clocks.

Does active cooling prevent throttling?
It can reduce the thermal pressure that causes throttling, but it does not eliminate throttling as a possibility. The phone may still enforce a power limit, respond to battery temperature, protect the display or adjust performance through software. A game can also stutter for reasons unrelated to heat.
Look for a measured temperature and frame-rate trace over the entire session. A result that starts high and falls sharply indicates a different experience from one that begins slightly lower but remains stable. Active cooling is valuable when it changes that late-session behavior for your workload.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Is an external phone cooler a sensible compromise?
Yes, when you need extra thermal headroom only for selected sessions and your phone supports the accessory. The approach lets a quieter passive phone remain simple during normal use while adding a fan and thermoelectric element for tournaments, travel or long gaming nights.
There are practical compromises:
- You must carry and attach the cooler, and possibly supply it with its own power.
- The accessory adds weight and can change the grip or block a case.
- Cooling performance depends on the contact between the cooler and the phone’s thermal conductor.
- Compatibility is model-specific; a cooler designed for one phone may not align correctly on another.
- ASUS’s “up to 1.3x better cooling performance” statement for the AeroActive Cooler X is a manufacturer claim for that product, not a standardized comparison with every internal fan system.
How to test your own phone fairly
- Choose one repeatable game or benchmark. Use the same version, graphics preset, resolution, frame-rate target and network mode for every run.
- Control the starting conditions. Begin at a similar battery percentage, close background apps and let the phone return to the same idle temperature.
- Keep the environment consistent. Record room temperature, brightness, case use and whether the phone is charging. Do not compare a bare phone in a cool room with a cased phone in direct sunlight.
- Run long enough to expose heat behavior. A short burst measures peak performance. A substantially longer session reveals whether frame rate, temperature or power limits change.
- Record more than average FPS. Note minimum or one-percent-low frame rate when available, frame pacing, surface temperature, chip temperature, fan speed and battery drain.
- Repeat each condition. Run the test more than once and report the range. One unusually cool or hot run can mislead.
- Compare like with like. If testing an external cooler, use the same phone, case, charger state and attachment pressure with and without the cooler.
Common pitfalls and how to avoid them
Confusing a larger vapor chamber with active cooling
A vapor chamber can be very large and effective, but it remains passive. It spreads heat; it does not force heat into the surrounding air. Read the specification for a fan, pump or thermoelectric element rather than inferring active cooling from the word “liquid.”
Treating RPM as a performance score
A 24,000 RPM fan specification describes rotational speed, not the frame rate a game will deliver. Fan size, airflow path, noise, heat exchanger design and software control also matter. Compare sustained results rather than ranking phones by RPM alone.
Using a one-time stress result as a universal promise
The 95% Solar Bay stability result for the RedMagic 11 Air is tied to that phone and test configuration. It cannot establish that every fan-cooled phone will achieve the same score or that every passive phone will perform worse.
Ignoring ambient temperature and cases
Both cooling approaches work against the surrounding environment. A hot room or insulating case reduces heat rejection and can make a passive phone reach its limit sooner. State those conditions whenever you compare results.
Assuming cooling fixes every stutter
Network delay, game-engine behavior, storage activity, background tasks and frame-rate caps can all cause uneven play. Cooling addresses thermal limits; it does not correct unrelated bottlenecks.
Bottom line for different players
Choose integrated active cooling if
- You routinely play demanding games for an hour or longer.
- You use emulators, high brightness, high frame-rate modes or gameplay recording.
- You prioritize stable late-session performance and the highest sustained clocks.
- You accept fan noise, extra power use, a thicker gaming-focused design and more mechanical complexity.
Choose a vapor-chamber phone if
- Your sessions are generally short or separated by cooling breaks.
- You need silent operation and a phone that feels simpler in everyday use.
- You care about camera, software and pocket comfort as much as gaming performance.
- You prefer to add an external cooler only when a particular session demands it.
For a phone that must handle sustained, demanding gaming with minimal performance decline, integrated active cooling has the stronger thermal argument. For a quieter all-purpose phone, passive vapor-chamber cooling is often the more balanced design. The best purchase is the one whose sustained tests match your games, session length, environment and tolerance for noise and bulk.
