An acoustic analogue makes sound waves behave as though they are near a horizon in a moving fluid or condensate. An optical analogue uses a moving refractive-index disturbance in a dielectric to create horizon-like conditions for light. Both are designed to test selected black-hole physics under controlled conditions; neither is an astronomical event horizon, and a laboratory signal is not by itself a detection of Hawking radiation from space.
The practical difference is therefore the wave and the medium: sound carried by a flowing material in the acoustic case, and light interacting with a refractive-index perturbation in the optical case. Their horizons, dispersion, detection methods and interpretations are related, but not interchangeable.

What “black hole” means in an analogue experiment
A gravitational black hole is a region of spacetime whose event horizon prevents signals, including light, from escaping to a distant observer. Laboratory analogue experiments do not create that spacetime geometry or compress matter into a stellar remnant. Instead, they engineer a medium in which a particular class of waves encounters a one-way boundary that is mathematically similar, for selected equations, to a black-hole horizon.

The analogy is built around wave propagation. If the background medium moves, or if a disturbance changes how waves propagate, there can be a point where waves travelling against the effective flow can no longer move back across the transition. Researchers can then ask whether wave conversion, correlations and radiation predicted for horizons also appear in the laboratory system.

- Mode conversion between positive- and negative-frequency components in descriptions used for analogue Hawking processes.
- Time-dependent behaviour, correlations and possible backreaction that can be measured with laboratory instruments.

That distinction is essential when reading headlines. The 2020 review Analogue Gravity and Yuval Rosenberg’s 2020 review of optical horizons describe these systems as analogues. Their results establish behaviour in the chosen medium. They do not, by themselves, prove that an astronomical black hole has emitted Hawking radiation.
Acoustic black-hole analogues: how sound gets a horizon
The moving-medium mechanism
Sound is a disturbance in a material medium. In an acoustic analogue, the medium itself flows, carrying sound waves with it. The relevant comparison is between the flow speed and the speed at which sound propagates through that medium. Where the flow changes from slower than sound to faster than sound, sound trying to travel upstream can be swept downstream instead. That transition acts as an acoustic horizon.
The idea is often called a “dumb hole” because it imitates the one-way character of a black-hole horizon for sound rather than light. The horizon is defined relative to the sound mode being studied: a different wave mode or a different propagation speed would have a different effective boundary.
Why a condensate can be useful
A Bose–Einstein condensate is one platform used for acoustic analogue work. Its collective excitations behave as phononic disturbances, giving researchers a controllable setting in which the background flow and the sound-like modes can be prepared and measured. The condensate is not a miniature star. It is a quantum fluid whose excitations provide the wave system for the analogy.
Researchers can monitor the evolution of the analogue flow and examine fluctuations associated with the horizon. Because the medium is material, measurements concern density, phase or related observables of the condensate rather than an astronomical light signal. The experimental design determines which frequencies, directions and time intervals are accessible.
What the 2020 condensate result reported
A Nature Physics paper published in 2020 reported observation of stationary spontaneous Hawking radiation and the time evolution of an analogue black hole in a Bose–Einstein-condensate system. “Spontaneous” refers to radiation arising from quantum fluctuations in the analogue setup rather than being produced solely by an externally injected probe. The result is evidence for the predicted process in that condensate configuration.

Its scope remains specific: it is an observation in an acoustic analogue. It does not establish that radiation has been detected from an astrophysical black hole, nor does it show that every detail of gravitational Hawking radiation is reproduced.

The refractive-index mechanism
In an optical analogue, the wave being studied is light and the medium is a dielectric. A controlled perturbation changes the medium’s refractive index. If that perturbation moves through the material, light can encounter it as a moving optical horizon in the appropriate reference frame. The horizon-like condition comes from the altered light-propagation relation, not from a gravitational pull.
Rosenberg’s review, “Optical analogues of black-hole horizons,” emphasizes that interpreting these experiments requires attention to classical fields, negative frequencies, ordinary optical effects and dispersion. Those details matter because a dielectric does not let every frequency travel in exactly the same way. The analogue therefore has a defined bandwidth and a defined relationship between the disturbance and the light modes used to probe it.
Why dispersion is central
Dispersion means that propagation depends on frequency. In a gravitational calculation, the idealized low-energy description can hide very short-wavelength behaviour; in an optical fibre or another dielectric, the material’s dispersion is an explicit part of the experiment. Researchers must identify which optical modes correspond to the analogue’s positive- and negative-frequency branches and determine how the refractive-index perturbation couples them.
This is also why an optical signal should not be read as a simple photograph of a black hole. The observed spectrum and correlations depend on the dielectric, the shape and speed of the index perturbation, the injected fields and the detection scheme. The experiment tests a model of horizon-related wave conversion under those conditions.
What the 2026 fibre-optical result reported
A Nature paper published on 1 July 2026, “Backreaction of stimulated Hawking radiation in an optical analogue,” reported experimental and theoretical evidence about stimulated Hawking-radiation generation in a fibre-optical analogue. It examined the optical field’s reaction back on the process, commonly called backreaction. The result extends the question beyond whether an analogue signal can be generated: it addresses how the generated field alters the process that produced it.

The table shows why “acoustic” and “optical” are not two names for the same apparatus. They share an experimental question—what happens when waves encounter a horizon-like transition—but use different carriers, materials and measurement channels.
The most important differences in practice
1. The wave carries different information
Acoustic experiments measure disturbances in matter. Their observables are tied to the state of the fluid or condensate, such as collective density or phase fluctuations. Optical experiments measure electromagnetic fields, often through the spectrum, timing, correlations or mode content of the outgoing light. A feature that is straightforward to identify in one channel may have no direct counterpart in the other.
2. The background is physical flow versus optical modulation
For an acoustic horizon, the background flow itself transports the sound modes. The critical condition is a speed comparison inside the moving medium. For an optical horizon, the key background is a refractive-index perturbation moving through a dielectric. The light is not being trapped by gravity; its propagation relation is being changed by the material response.
3. Dispersion enters differently
Both systems have dispersion, but the relevant source and scale differ. In a condensate, the collective excitation spectrum and the properties of the quantum fluid set the departures from a simple sound-wave model. In optics, the dielectric’s frequency-dependent refractive index, fibre properties and pulse design are explicit parts of the experiment. Any comparison of spectra must therefore keep the medium and mode definitions attached to the result.
4. Spontaneous and stimulated processes are not the same claim
The 2020 condensate report concerns stationary spontaneous Hawking radiation. The 2026 fibre experiment concerns stimulated Hawking-radiation processes and their backreaction. A stimulated process uses an externally prepared optical field to drive or amplify the analogue conversion, whereas spontaneous emission is associated with fluctuations in the analogue system itself. They probe related physics but should not be treated as identical observations.

Have scientists detected Hawking radiation?
Scientists have reported Hawking-radiation-like signals in laboratory analogues, including the spontaneous condensate result from 2020 and stimulated optical processes in fibre experiments. They have not observed Hawking radiation from an astronomical black hole. The 2026 Nature article states this directly: “Hawking radiation has never been observed in astronomy, only in laboratory analogues.”

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteThis is not a contradiction. Hawking radiation from an astrophysical black hole is expected to be extraordinarily difficult to isolate against other cosmic backgrounds. An analogue experiment changes the setting so that the relevant wave conversion can be created and measured under controlled conditions. The resulting evidence tests the analogue mechanism and predictions, not the existence of an astronomical signal.
How to read an analogue-radiation claim
- Identify the medium. Determine whether the result concerns a condensate, fluid, fibre or another dielectric system.
- Identify the process. Check whether the experiment reports spontaneous emission, stimulated conversion, correlations, or a response such as backreaction.
- Identify the wave modes. Read which frequencies, branches and propagation directions are being compared.
- Keep the scope attached to the result. The conclusion should say what happened in the analogue platform, not that an astronomical black hole was observed.
Which analogue is suited to which research question?
Choose an acoustic platform when the question concerns flowing media
An acoustic system is the natural choice for studying how a material flow changes the ability of sound-like disturbances to propagate upstream. It is especially useful when the experiment needs direct control over a fluid or condensate background and wants to track the time evolution of an analogue horizon through matter-based observables.
Choose an optical platform when the question concerns light, modes and material dispersion
An optical system is suited to experiments that need a moving refractive-index perturbation, precise control of electromagnetic modes and detailed analysis of frequency conversion. Fibre optics can also make it possible to investigate how an optical field feeds back on the process, as in the 2026 backreaction study.
Neither platform is universally “more real.” The better choice depends on the wave equation, the controllable parameters and the measurement needed for the specific hypothesis.
Common misconceptions and how to avoid them
“An acoustic black hole is a black hole made of sound.”
No. It is a flow configuration that creates a one-way boundary for sound disturbances. The medium remains laboratory matter, and its horizon applies to the selected acoustic modes.
Best Value
“An optical black hole traps light permanently.”
Not in the astronomical sense. A refractive-index perturbation can make light experience horizon-like mode conversion in a defined frame and frequency range. The effect depends on the optical setup and its dispersion.
“Any Hawking-like spectrum proves Hawking radiation from space.”
No. The analogue result supports a corresponding process in the tested medium. Astronomical confirmation would require an observation of radiation associated with an actual gravitational black hole.
“Stimulated and spontaneous Hawking radiation are interchangeable labels.”
No. They refer to different experimental conditions. The source, preparation and interpretation of the field must be stated with the result.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
“The analogy removes the need to understand the material.”
The opposite is true. Flow speed, sound speed, refractive index, dispersion, perturbation shape and detection bandwidth determine what the laboratory system actually tests. Ignoring those details can turn a carefully bounded analogue result into an unsupported universal claim.
Where the field stands
The acoustic/optical distinction is well established: sound waves in a moving fluid or condensate on one side, and light in a dielectric with a refractive-index perturbation on the other. The experimental frontier is more active. The 2020 condensate work addressed spontaneous radiation and analogue-horizon evolution; the 2026 fibre-optical work examined stimulated radiation and backreaction. Future interpretations should therefore be tied to the specific platform, publication date and process measured.
The clearest bottom line is simple: acoustic and optical black holes are complementary laboratory models. They let researchers test selected horizon physics with different waves and materials, while neither one should be presented as an astronomical black hole or as a direct observation of Hawking radiation from the universe.
