Acorns makes investing approachable by automating small contributions into a diversified ETF portfolio, with a stated starting amount of $5. The trade-off is a fixed monthly subscription: at a low balance, that charge can consume a meaningful share of your money. It may suit beginners who value automation and bundled services, but it is less compelling if your priority is minimizing costs or choosing every investment yourself.
What Acorns does—and who it may suit
Acorns combines investment accounts, retirement accounts, and bank-issued deposit services in one subscription. Its core investing experience recommends a managed portfolio based on answers to an Investor Profile Questionnaire, then supports contributions through recurring deposits and Round-Ups. You do not have to pick each holding in the standard portfolio.

That design can help someone who wants to start small and prefers an automated routine. It does not remove the need to consider fees, risk, or whether the accounts included in a plan are useful to you. How much Acorns costs in 2026
Acorns charges a flat monthly subscription rather than a percentage of assets. Its pricing depends on when a customer signs up: Acorns’ Form CRS, dated August 3, 2026, specifies a scheduled price change on August 17, 2026. The table reflects those stated new-customer prices; existing customers, promotions, and grandfathered terms may differ. Confirm the amount shown during enrollment.

Why a flat fee matters more on a small balance
A fixed subscription takes the same dollar amount regardless of how much you have invested. At $4 per month, the annual charge is $48, before any investment gain or loss. That equals 4.8% of a $1,000 balance, 0.96% of a $5,000 balance, and 0.48% of a $10,000 balance. These are simple fee-to-balance illustrations, not forecasts or total-cost estimates; the balance can change, and other costs may apply.

Acorns’ Program Agreement explicitly warns that its fixed subscription may be disproportionately high relative to managed assets. It also says the full subscription may be owed even if an account has not been opened or verified, and that subscriptions are not refunded for cancellation mid-cycle. How investing and Round-Ups work
Automated contributions
Acorns says users can begin investing with $5. With Round-Ups, a linked-card purchase is rounded up to the next dollar; the accumulated difference is invested once it reaches at least $5. Recurring investments provide another way to contribute. Round-Ups turn spending into small deposits, but they do not make the underlying investment safer or guarantee growth.

Portfolio choices
For the base portfolio, Acorns uses questionnaire answers to recommend a managed ETF portfolio. Customers choose a Core or ESG base portfolio. Acorns describes the ESG option as seeking ETFs that hold companies with comparative MSCI ESG ratings; that description is a product approach, not a guarantee of social impact or financial results.
Gold adds Custom Portfolios, which can include individual stocks and ETFs. Under the Program Agreement, the account is at least 50% non-discretionary: the customer directs up to 50% and Acorns manages the rest. The agreement also allows customers to elect up to 5% in a bitcoin-linked ETF in specified managed-account configurations. These are product terms, not investment recommendations. Acorns Later includes Traditional, SEP, and Roth IRA account types. Eligibility, contribution limits, tax treatment, and withdrawal rules vary by account and individual circumstances. Verify current IRS guidance and the account custodian’s terms before making tax or retirement decisions.

Investing, banking, and account protections are different
Acorns is not a bank. Its disclosures identify Acorns Advisers as an SEC-registered investment adviser and Acorns Securities as an SEC-registered broker-dealer and FINRA/SIPC member. Its debit card and banking services are issued by Lincoln Savings Bank or nbkc bank, which Acorns describes as FDIC members. FDIC deposit insurance and SIPC brokerage protection are separate frameworks. Neither guarantees investment returns or prevents losses from market movements. Acorns’ investment disclosures state that investing involves risk, including loss of principal; a diversified ETF portfolio and automatic contributions do not eliminate that risk.
Is Acorns worth it for a beginner?
Acorns is most plausible for a beginner who values automatic investing, small recurring contributions, and having investing and banking features together—and who expects to use enough of the included services to justify the subscription. The flat fee becomes less burdensome as the balance grows, but at a small balance it is a material cost to weigh before enrolling.
It is a weaker fit for someone focused chiefly on keeping fixed fees as low as possible, or who wants direct control over all investment selections without paying for features they will not use. Compare the plan’s actual enrollment price and account terms with your expected balance and habits, rather than treating convenience or a promotional match as proof of value.
