Those findings come from Tom’s Guide’s review of one configuration; the model name covers several different hardware and display combinations.
Which Helios Neo 16 AI did the review test?
Configuration matters more than the shared product name suggests. Tom’s Guide tested a model with an Intel Core Ultra 9 275HX, 32GB of RAM, an NVIDIA GeForce RTX 5070 Ti and 1TB of storage. Its configuration table also describes a lower starting model and a higher-end model, neither of which is the same as the test unit.

Acer’s U.S. specification page for SKU PHN16-73-7166 lists a Core Ultra 7 255HX, RTX 5070 with 8GB of GDDR7, 16GB of RAM and a 1TB SSD. That SKU has a 16-inch, 2560 × 1600 IPS display with a 240Hz refresh rate. It is a distinct configuration from the review unit, so the test results below should not be treated as measurements of PHN16-73-7166.

Is the 240Hz display a real strength?
In Tom’s Guide’s testing, the review unit’s screen combined fast motion with strong brightness and color results. The reviewer measured peak brightness of 520.8 nits, coverage of 155.2% of sRGB and 109.9% of DCI-P3, and Delta-E color accuracy of 0.09. These are the review’s measurements, not guarantees for every Helios Neo 16 AI configuration.
A 240Hz refresh rate can show up to 240 screen updates per second, which can make motion look smoother when a game is producing enough frames to take advantage of it. It does not mean every game will run at 240 frames per second: the measured results varied considerably by game and settings. Nor does the 240Hz figure alone tell you whether a particular SKU uses IPS or OLED; the U.S. PHN16-73-7166 is listed with an IPS panel, while Tom’s Guide’s listed top configuration has OLED.
How did it perform in games?
On the review unit, Tom’s Guide reported the following frame rates at the laptop’s native 1600p resolution:

| Game | Graphics preset | Reported result |
|---|---|---|
| Counter-Strike 2 | Highest | 228fps |
| Forza Horizon 5 | Extreme | 112fps |
| F1 25 | Ultra High | 60fps |
These are Tom’s Guide’s results for its Core Ultra 9 275HX and RTX 5070 Ti review unit, not a prediction for every configuration or game. The spread illustrates why it is more useful to compare results for the games and settings you care about than to infer performance from the 240Hz display or GPU name alone.

What are the main everyday compromises?
Battery life is limited in the review test
Tom’s Guide measured 4 hours and 11 minutes in its web-browsing and video-streaming battery test at 150-nit screen brightness. Gaming on battery lasted just over 45 minutes in the review. Acer lists a manufacturer maximum battery-run-time figure of 5 hours for PHN16-73-7166; that specification and the reviewer’s test use different contexts and should not be read as directly comparable promises.
Expect heat and audible cooling under load
The review identifies heat and fan noise as concerns. That matters if you regularly play beside other people or expect quiet operation during demanding sessions. Tom’s Guide mentions noise-canceling headphones as an optional way to make fan sound less distracting; headphones do not address the laptop’s heat or cooling behavior.
It is a substantial machine to carry
Tom’s Guide lists the top configuration at 5.95 pounds, and Acer lists the same weight for PHN16-73-7166. Weight can vary across regional configurations, so treat 5.95 pounds as the figure attached to those specific listings rather than a universal specification for the family.
The review found slow initial SSD results
With the pre-installed software present, Tom’s Guide measured SSD write speed of 1,092 MB/s and read speed of 934 MB/s. After uninstalling software, the reviewer measured 3,128 MB/s write and 3,786 MB/s read. That before-and-after observation suggests the installed software affected the review unit’s result; it does not establish that every unit will behave the same way or that removing particular apps will produce identical speeds.

It is capable beyond gaming, but the result is not the whole story
On the review unit, Tom’s Guide recorded 2,749 single-core and 23,100 multi-core in Geekbench 7, and a 2-minute-26-second result for a 4K-to-1080p HandBrake transcode. Those figures give some context for processor-heavy work, but they do not offset the review’s concerns about battery runtime, noise, heat and portability.
Should you buy the Acer Predator Helios Neo 16 AI?
It is worth considering if your priority is a high-refresh gaming display and strong performance while plugged in, and you accept a heavy laptop with audible cooling and modest battery endurance. It is a weaker match if you need long unplugged sessions, quiet gaming or a machine you will carry frequently.
Tom’s Guide summarized its review this way: “The Acer Predator Helios Neo 16 AI is far from perfect, with glaring issues when it comes to its battery life, SSD speeds (hampered by bloatware), cooling system, and its hefty weight.” That verdict applies to the review’s tested unit and should not be silently transferred to a different SKU.
