Try recovery from the Chromebook
- Disconnect connected accessories.
- With the Chromebook off, hold Esc and Refresh, then press Power.
- Release Power when the recovery screen appears, then release Esc and Refresh.
- Follow the instructions shown on the recovery screen. Available choices and screens can vary by device.
Some newer Chromebooks offer recovery over the internet. Use that option only if it appears on the device and follow its prompts.
If internet recovery is not available
Google’s external recovery method requires a second working Chromebook or a Windows or Mac computer with Chrome and the Chromebook Recovery Utility. The utility creates recovery media on a USB flash drive and erases the drive.
- Use a USB drive with at least 8 GB of capacity that you are willing to erase.
- When the utility asks for the affected device’s model, select the model information shown for your Chromebook. “Googlebook 14” alone may not identify the exact model, so do not guess.
- Follow Google’s recovery instructions and the prompts on the affected Chromebook.
If recovery fails or you cannot identify the model
If the recovery screen reports an unexpected error or says the media does not contain ChromeOS, Google recommends erasing the recovery media and trying again, or using a different USB drive; some drives may not work properly. If the error persists, contact the manufacturer.

Read the exact model identifier from the Chromebook or its packaging before contacting Acer. Explain that it has been cycling between the Acer logo and “Updating” for an hour after setup, and say which troubleshooting steps or recovery options you were able to try. Google’s general instructions do not establish the cause of this particular loop or an Acer-specific procedure for it.
Do not rely on another Acer model’s wait time
Acer has published guidance for an update-related boot symptom on the older AC710, including a wait estimate for that specific model. It does not establish how long this Googlebook 14 should take, so that estimate should not be applied to this device.
