Ace Combat 8: Wings of Theve is worth considering if you want fast, cinematic aerial combat rather than a realistic flight simulator. Its dogfights, mission variety and visuals are the strengths highlighted by TechRadar reviewer Joe Chivers, while he faults the campaign for long cutscenes and a story that strains for drama. That makes it an appealing arcade take on Top Gun-style spectacle, provided you have patience for its fictional military melodrama.
Does Ace Combat 8 get the flying right?
The game is built around arcade-style flight shooting: fast dogfights, mission-specific aircraft selection and customization, wingman attack and cover commands, dynamic weather, and encounters with large enemy superweapons. TechRadar’s Joe Chivers praised the combat, mission variety and visuals after completing the main storyline and replaying several Free Mission missions. He tested the PC version on an RTX 4070 system with a standard Xbox Wireless Controller; those are his review conditions, not a performance guarantee for other PCs. His verdict captures the split: “Ace Combat 8 is a phenomenal arcade flight sim. You’ll feel like Maverick every single time you dodge an enemy missile or manage to take down a rival ace. Where it stumbles is its story, which drags on and attempts to cash dramatic checks that it simply cannot.” (TechRadar review)
How much does the story get in the way?
The campaign takes place in Strangereal, Ace Combat’s fictional setting. The Federation of Central Usea has fallen to an invasion by the Republic of Sotoa; you assume the symbolic identity Wings of Theve and fight alongside Joker Flight. The premise aims for cinematic military stakes rather than a real-world conflict. Tom’s Guide reviewer Clayton Ashley likewise describes the setting as fictional and the action as cinematic rather than mechanically realistic (Tom’s Guide review).

The trade-off is pacing. Chivers enjoyed the action but criticized the long cutscenes and melodramatic writing. If you mainly want to chain missions and dogfights, those story interruptions may feel like drag; if you enjoy Ace Combat’s heightened fictional military drama, the campaign’s tone may be part of the appeal. The available reviews establish those differing priorities, not a universal reaction.
Is Ace Combat 8 like Top Gun, and do you need a flight stick?
It shares Top Gun’s appeal of high-speed aerial spectacle and rival-ace encounters, but it is not a realistic flight simulator. Bandai Namco presents it as arcade flight combat, while Ashley contrasts its fictional, cinematic battles with real-world mechanical accuracy. A joystick and throttle can be paired, but Ashley says the game is made for a controller: “Though you can pair the game with a joystick and throttle, the game is made for a controller.” The sources do not establish a required peripheral or a complete compatibility list.

What platforms and editions are available?
Ace Combat 8 launched worldwide on October 2, 2026, for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and PC via Steam. Bandai Namco lists Standard and Deluxe digital editions, as well as a Joker Flight Pack. The Deluxe Edition’s early access began September 29, before the worldwide launch, so that benefit has already passed. Check the official game page and the specific regional store listing for current contents and availability.

What does the online mode include?
The game includes ACE COMBAT ONLINE, with cross-platform play and cooperative and competitive modes. Its Air Base hub can host up to 100 players, according to Bandai Namco; that figure describes the hub, not the number of players in a match. It is a stronger fit for players who want responsive, cinematic arcade combat and can accept a lengthy, emphatic story between sorties. Chivers’ review supports the case for the flying and presentation, but also makes the narrative and cutscene pacing the main reservation. For a grounded simulation or a campaign that stays out of the way, this is not positioned as that kind of game.
