Ace Combat 8: Wings of Theve delivers its strongest case through fast, satisfying aerial combat, but its lengthy story scenes and uneven narrative payoff may frustrate players who want the action without interruption. It launched worldwide on October 2, 2026, for PC via Steam, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S. The evidence available supports a review of the PC version and the game’s announced features, but not a direct performance comparison between platforms.
What is Ace Combat 8: Wings of Theve?
Developed by Bandai Namco Aces and published by Bandai Namco Entertainment, Ace Combat 8 is a flight-shooting game set in the series’ fictional world of Strangereal. You take on the identity of the legendary Wings of Theve and lead Joker Flight in a conflict involving the Federation of Central Usea. The campaign uses first-person cutscenes and, as TechRadar’s review describes it, weaves propaganda and social media into its story. Bandai Namco’s overview and TechRadar’s review provide those respective details.

That framing sets up a game built around flying and fighting rather than a realistic flight simulation. Its missions include dogfights, close air support, and attacks on enemy ships, according to TechRadar. The appeal is less about managing a detailed cockpit and more about steering through a large, shifting battlefield while choosing when and how to attack.

How does the combat and customization work?
Bandai Namco’s walkthrough describes complete 360-degree flight, dynamic weather, dogfights, and defensive maneuvers such as high-G turns. You can choose from real-world and original aircraft, then tailor a fighter to a mission with upgrade parts and special weapons. That gives the campaign a practical decision layer: aircraft and loadout choices help shape how you approach a particular objective.

Players who enjoy coordinating a squadron may find another layer of decision-making alongside piloting and weapon selection.
Is Ace Combat 8 worth playing?
TechRadar’s PC reviewer praises the speed and sensation of aerial combat, cloud visuals, and the feeling of piloting powerful aircraft. The reviewer also says the action remains exciting when cutscenes are skipped. Those are the publication’s judgments, not evidence of a universal consensus.

The same review flags lengthy cutscenes, an anticlimactic ending, and systems that do not feel sufficiently distinct from Ace Combat 7 in some respects. That makes the game’s fit fairly clear: it is a stronger prospect for players primarily seeking dramatic mission-based flying than for those expecting an uninterrupted action campaign or a major reinvention of the series.

PC performance: what does the review establish?
TechRadar’s reviewer completed the main storyline and played several Free Mission levels on a PC with an Nvidia RTX 4070 at high graphics settings. They reported generally solid 60 fps, with dips in particularly hectic moments, and used an Xbox Wireless Controller. This is a bounded observation from one PC setup, not a performance guarantee for other hardware.
The reviewer had not played online. The available review evidence does not establish frame rates or comparative performance on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S, nor does it support a controlled platform comparison. If performance is your deciding factor, check the current system requirements and platform-specific details in the relevant store listing before buying.

Does Ace Combat 8 have cross-play and online co-op?
Yes. Bandai Namco announced cross-play for ACE COMBAT ONLINE, with online progression and save data separate from the campaign. Its multiplayer announcement describes two central modes:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:

The publisher also announced temporary emergency missions, training with up to four players, and activities in a shared Air Base hub that can accommodate up to 100 players, according to the official game site. These are announced features. The available evidence does not independently establish matchmaking quality, active player population, server reliability, or how the live online service has performed since launch.

Which platforms can you play it on?
Ace Combat 8: Wings of Theve is available on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC via Steam. Bandai Namco gives October 2, 2026, as the worldwide launch date. Deluxe Edition early access was announced for September 28, 2026, but that was a historical early-access window, not a current way to start playing sooner.
Xbox Wire’s pre-release preview lists a Deluxe Edition with a customizable cosmetic set and a Premium Ace Pass Plus voucher, along with preorder bonuses. That preview covered only the opening hour, so it is not a full-game review. Preorder offers are time-sensitive; check current store listings for what is actually included and available.
The available information confirms platform availability but does not establish current prices or edition prices. It also does not provide comparable performance results across PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X|S, so there is no supported basis here for naming one version the best-performing choice.

Who should buy Ace Combat 8?
- Good fit: Players looking for mission-focused aerial action, high-speed dogfights, aircraft and weapon choices, and wingman commands.
- Think twice: Players who strongly dislike extended cutscenes, want a more compelling story payoff, or expect a major change to the series’ established systems.
- For co-op players: Cross-play and two announced team-based modes offer a reason to look beyond the campaign, but the available evidence does not rate the live multiplayer experience.
For most buyers, the key question is whether the flight combat outweighs the story’s pacing and ending. The PC review suggests the combat can carry the experience, but its findings apply to one reviewer’s playthrough and setup, not every platform or player.
