What makes the campaign stand out?
Weather changes the fight
Clouds are more than visual decoration. Wright reports that cloud cover can provide relief from missile fire, but it also restricts visibility and brings hazards such as ice and turbulence. Enemies take advantage of those conditions, making the weather a tactical trade-off: shelter may buy a moment, but it can also make it harder to track targets or control the aircraft.
Dogfights and mission variety
The review characterizes dogfights as pursuit-and-chase sequences, giving engagements a strong sense of momentum. Mission variety also helps aircraft with an air-to-ground focus remain useful across more of the campaign, rather than making them feel like narrow choices suited to only one kind of objective.

Squadron drama carries weight
Wright praises the dialogue and characterization among Joker Flight and the opposing Shadows, as well as the campaign’s dramatic late-game climax. The story is not just connective material between sorties: squad relationships and the conflict help give the action its emotional stakes. PC Gamer’s verdict calls the result “Arcade flight action and anime melodrama refined to the highest possible level—a must play for aviation fans.”
How well does Ace Combat 8 perform on PC?
PC Gamer’s review was played on a system with a Radeon RX 6600, Ryzen 7 7700X, and 32GB of DDR5 RAM. On that hardware, Wright reports mostly stable performance at 1440p, with occasional cutscene hitching and frame-rate dips. These are observations from that specific setup, not a guarantee for every PC.

The reviewer also notes that the PC version has no field-of-view slider. Across two playthroughs, Wright encountered one instance of input ghosting on the sticks after a frame-rate dip. That isolated report is worth knowing if you play with a controller or flight stick, but it does not establish a general compatibility problem.

Should you play Ace Combat 8?
If you want a story-driven arcade flight game, the review makes a persuasive case for the campaign: weather affects decisions, missions support different aircraft roles, and the squadron drama gives the sorties a clear narrative purpose. The strongest evidence here is specifically about single-player. If multiplayer is a deciding factor, this review cannot tell you how well that mode works.
