What Ace Combat 8 is, and when it launched
The game’s full title is Ace Combat 8: Wings of Theve, the latest entry in Bandai Namco’s Ace Combat flight-action series. Bandai Namco’s PlayStation Blog announcement gave October 2, 2026 as its PS5 release date; the US PlayStation Store listing showed it available when accessed on October 3, 2026. Bandai Namco’s release announcement and the US PlayStation product page establish the PS5 launch. PlayStation LifeStyle also reports a launch on Xbox Series X|S and PC, but the official listings cited here directly confirm only PS5.

What you do in the campaign
Air combat and aircraft
Campaign Mode is a single-player story set in Strangereal, the series’ fictional world. Bandai Namco describes missions involving air-to-air dogfights, ground attacks, anti-ship strikes and battles against giant fictional weapons. The game features more than 30 aircraft, divided into fighter, attack, multi-role and electronic warfare roles. These are publisher descriptions, not independent hands-on findings.

Joker Squadron and the story setting
You command Joker Squadron, choose its composition during missions and give orders to wingmen. The fictional story begins in July 2029, when the Republic of Sotoa invades the Federation of Central Usea and captures its capital, Theve. After being rescued by the aging carrier Endurance, the player fights to regain control. The announcement describes a fictional land battleship as approximately 450 meters long; that is an in-game scale detail, not a real-world measurement.

Presentation and handling
PlayStation Store copy describes dynamic, layered clouds, arcade-style flight handling and first-person story scenes between cockpit action. Those are product descriptions rather than a tested assessment of how the game plays.
Solo play, online modes and PS Plus
The campaign is designed for one player, while the US PlayStation listing also describes an online lobby, a social air base and co-op modes with cross-platform play. It lists online play for up to eight players. Online play is optional; a PlayStation Plus subscription is required to play online on PS5. The listing also specifies Remote Play support. Check the current store page for any changes to mode availability or subscription requirements.

The PlayStation Store also lists optional ACE COINS and other add-ons. The June 2 announcement described a pre-order bonus of a PS5-ported version of Ace Combat Zero: The Belkan War—originally released for PlayStation 2 in 2006—and playable F-14A Tomcat aircraft. That announcement documents the offer as a pre-order bonus, not as a currently available purchase or entitlement; check the live regional listing before relying on it. Bandai Namco also cautioned that Deluxe content and offers can vary by country and may be digital-only. The official pages cited here confirm digital listings, not boxed-edition availability.

DualSense support and what you need to play
The PS5 product listing confirms DualSense wireless-controller vibration and trigger effects. It describes feature support, not a requirement to buy an additional controller. The same US listing identifies one-player play and optional online play, with PS Plus required only for online play.
