Ace Combat 8: Wings of Theve is an arcade-inspired flight-shooting game, not a study-level flight simulator. Start with the control mode that lets you steer confidently, then focus on the objective, target tracking, attacks and missile evasion. Read each mission briefing before choosing your aircraft and weapons: dogfights, ground support and naval strikes call for different preparation.
Which flight-control mode should you choose?
The game offers two steering modes. Bandai Namco’s control-mode explainer distinguishes them by how you make a turn:

Neither mode is universally best. Choose the one that helps you keep control while tracking targets, and try the other later if you want a different feel. The publisher confirms these mode distinctions, but the available official material does not provide a complete current button chart for every platform and setup. Check the in-game settings for exact inputs rather than relying on a generic control list.

Think of combat as a sequence: orient toward the objective, keep the target in view, attack when lined up, and evade incoming missiles when threatened. The game features fast aerial action, 360-degree flight, dynamic weather, dogfights, missile evasion and high-G turns; the official game-systems walkthrough highlights staying on target, evasion and high-G turns as important combat systems.

Keep your attention on the target
Do not treat firing as the whole job. Maintain awareness of where the target is and work to line up an attack; if you lose track of it while maneuvering, reorient before committing to another shot.
Evade instead of holding a turn constantly
Use defensive maneuvers when missiles threaten you. A high-G turn is one tool for maneuvering, not a move to hold continuously. The publisher identifies high-G turns and missile evasion as combat features but does not prescribe one maneuver for every threat.

Give wingmen a tactical job
You can issue attack or cover orders to wingmen in real time. An attack order can help concentrate pressure, while cover can support a defensive approach; the right choice depends on the situation, and the publisher does not set out a universal command strategy for every mission.

Read the briefing before selecting an aircraft, upgrades or special weapons. Bandai Namco advises matching your choices to the mission and your playstyle. Its game overview describes several kinds of work, so a setup suited to one sortie should not be assumed to suit every other one.

Inspect large targets and the surrounding battle
Some enemies are colossal superweapons. The official walkthrough says they can be damaged outside designated target zones, and that destroyed enemy weapons can create wreckage chain reactions against nearby targets. When facing a large enemy, look at the target and the surrounding area rather than assuming only one marked point can be hit.

Do you need a flight stick?
A flight stick is not established as necessary. TechRadar’s reviewer completed play using a standard Xbox Wireless Controller on PC, while PC Gamer reported complaints from early-access players about HOTAS support. Those are limited observations, not a definitive compatibility list for every controller, flight stick, platform or setup. Check the game’s current in-game settings and platform information for the devices you intend to use.

Bandai Namco’s launch announcement says worldwide launch was October 2, 2026, on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and PC via Steam. It also says Deluxe Edition holders received early access beginning September 29, 2026. Store availability and edition details can vary by region, so check the relevant platform store for current listings.
