Bandai Namco apologized after some Steam buyers expected the ACE COMBAT ZERO: THE BELKAN WAR preorder bonus to arrive as a standalone app, but found it could only be accessed through ACE COMBAT 8: WINGS OF THEVE. The publisher cited licensing restrictions and platform-related considerations, and acknowledged that it had not clearly explained the delivery method in advance. The ACE COMBAT Team says it is exploring a standalone Steam app, but has not confirmed that it will happen or when.
What caused the Ace Combat 8 preorder backlash?
The dispute is about how the Steam version of the preorder bonus is distributed, not whether ACE COMBAT ZERO: THE BELKAN WAR exists. Some PC buyers understood the bonus to mean they would receive the older game as a separate application. Instead, the reported arrangement required launching it through ACE COMBAT 8.
In a statement attributed to Bandai Namco’s Steam communication, the publisher said licensing restrictions and platform-related considerations prevented the bonus from being released on Steam as a standalone application at that time. It said the game was therefore made available through ACE COMBAT 8 and apologized for not communicating the distribution method clearly in advance. Operation Sports reported the apology and explanation.
What solution is the ACE COMBAT Team considering?
The ACE COMBAT Team says it has continued discussions with platform partners and other relevant parties while evaluating a change to the distribution method. Its official Steam community update says:
#1 Best Overall

- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
“Rather than accessing the title through ACE COMBAT™ 8: WINGS OF THEVE, we are exploring the possibility of making ACE COMBAT ZERO available as a standalone application on Steam.”
“Exploring the possibility” is not a release commitment. The team says implementation details and timing remain under review, and it will provide another update once details are finalized, including whether the change can be realized. The update gives no release date and does not guarantee a standalone Steam version.

What are Steam players objecting to?
PC Gamer’s reporting describes player complaints about the change from a standalone-app expectation, needing to install and launch ACE COMBAT 8 to reach the bonus, storage burden, and perceived differences from console versions. These are reported concerns, not evidence that every buyer had the same expectation or that every platform differs in the same way.
One player quoted by PC Gamer complained, “You need to install 140gb of data to play a 3gb 20 years old game.” That is an individual review comment, not an independently verified measurement of required installation sizes.

How does Steam access compare with console versions?
The established distinction in this dispute is the access method: the Steam bonus was made available through ACE COMBAT 8, while players have raised concerns about platform differences. PC Gamer also reports differences involving achievements or trophies and cloud saves. Those are secondary-reporting claims; the available official update does not provide a platform-by-platform comparison or confirm that Steam’s distribution will change.
The ACE COMBAT Team is considering a standalone Steam application specifically. Until it confirms a change, buyers should not treat that possibility as an announced feature or assume the bonus experience will be identical across platforms.

Does buying Ace Combat 8 now include the Belkan War bonus?
Bandai Namco’s official ACE COMBAT 8 page lists the game’s editions and platforms and describes ACE COMBAT ZERO as a preorder bonus. That description does not establish that a purchase made now includes the bonus. Check the current listing and terms for the specific platform and seller before buying if access to the bonus matters to you.
