For a new Abyssal Ascent server, use one exact pack release on both the server and every client. The current files listing identifies Abyssal Ascent 0.2.3 for Minecraft 1.20.1 Forge, while older 0.2.2.x and 1.19.2 files remain available. Download the matching dedicated server pack when the selected release provides one, run it with 64-bit Java 17 and the supplied Forge script, accept the EULA, then configure networking and backups before inviting players.
Godlike.Host offers modded Minecraft server hosting with one-click modpacks, a built-in mod installer and up to three free backups a day.
What makes Abyssal Ascent different from a normal modded server?
Abyssal Ascent is a Forge modpack designed around vertical progression through at least eight dimensions. Immersive Portals connects the dimensions, beginning in the Undergarden and moving through increasingly hostile environments toward the Overworld. Custom recipes, bosses, biomes, equipment and resources are part of that progression, and the pack also includes proximity voice chat.

That design makes version discipline unusually important. A world is not just a collection of independent mods: dimensions, portal links, recipes and generated structures can all be affected by a pack update. Treat the server as a managed application with a known release, a dedicated directory, repeatable launch scripts and regular backups.
Choose one exact Abyssal Ascent release
Do this before downloading Java files or copying mods. The client and server must use the same Minecraft version, Forge line and Abyssal Ascent release.

| Release choice | Compatibility | Server-pack guidance | World implication |
|---|---|---|---|
| Abyssal Ascent 0.2.3 | Minecraft 1.20.1 Forge; shown as the current release on September 22, 2026 | Check the files listing for a server-pack attachment for this exact release before proceeding | Use for a new world unless you have a reason to remain on an older build |
| Abyssal Ascent 0.2.2.x | Use the Minecraft and Forge versions displayed beside the selected file | A dedicated 1.20.1 Forge server pack is listed for 0.2.2.2 | Keep an existing 0.2.2.x world on its matching release unless you have a tested migration plan |
| Abyssal Ascent 1.19.2 line | Separate from the 1.20.1 line | Use only files intended for that 1.19.2 release | Do not open a 1.19.2 world with a 1.20.1 installation or vice versa |
Version numbers that look close are not interchangeable. A server on 0.2.3 should reject or fail to load a 0.2.2.x client, and a 1.19.2 client cannot substitute for a 1.20.1 client. Write the chosen release in your setup notes so every player downloads the same file.
Server requirements: Java, memory and hardware
Install 64-bit Java 17
Forge documentation for the 1.20.x generation requires a 64-bit Java 17 JDK or JVM. Open a terminal or command prompt and run:
java -version
Confirm that the reported major version is 17 and that the installation is 64-bit. If the command is missing, reports an older Java version or points to a 32-bit runtime, install a suitable 64-bit Java 17 build and make sure the server process uses it. Multiple Java installations are common; checking the command from the same account that will launch the server avoids silently using the wrong runtime.
Allocate memory conservatively
The Abyssal Ascent project reports 4 GB of allocated RAM as stable guidance from its 2025/2026 testing. It also warns that allocating 8 GB or more can cause instability on some systems. This is project guidance, not a guaranteed minimum: player count, view distance, generated terrain, Java behavior and the host’s physical memory all change the result.
Do not confuse the project’s client example with a server requirement. The page cites 6 GB RAM for a client targeting 100-plus frames per second at 1080p with Complementary shaders, alongside an example Core i5-6700 or Ryzen 5 1600 and an RTX 2060 6 GB or Radeon RX 5600 XT 6 GB. Those graphics and shader figures describe the playing computer, not the dedicated server.
Start with the published server allocation, observe actual memory use and garbage-collection pauses, and change the value in small steps. Giving Java nearly all host memory can starve the operating system, file cache and other services, producing worse performance rather than better performance.

Download the server pack and prepare its folder
Use the supplied server pack
Open the Abyssal Ascent files listing, select the exact release you chose and download its dedicated server-pack attachment when one is available. For example, the listing identifies a 1.20.1 Forge server pack for 0.2.2.2. Do not assume that a client download or an unrelated server pack has the same contents. If the selected release has no attachment, verify the project’s current instructions before attempting an installation; do not reconstruct a server by copying a random client mods folder.
Keep the installation isolated
Create a new directory used only by this server. A practical layout is:
AbyssalAscent-server/
├─ run.bat (Windows launcher, if supplied)
├─ run.sh (Linux/macOS launcher, if supplied)
├─ user_jvm_args.txt
├─ server.properties
├─ config/
├─ mods/
├─ world/ (created after first launch)
└─ logs/
The exact files depend on the pack release. Do not place the server in a player’s .minecraft directory, and do not share a directory with another modded server. Isolation keeps configurations, logs, saves and rollback copies unambiguous.
Extract the downloaded archive without changing its internal names. On Linux or macOS, make the supplied shell launcher executable if the operating system removed that permission during extraction:
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →chmod +x run.sh
Use the pack’s launcher rather than inventing a command around a Forge jar. Modern Forge installations can depend on generated arguments, libraries and installer metadata that a generic java -jar forge.jar invocation does not reproduce.
Install and start the server step by step
- Stop other Minecraft servers. Close any process that could use the same directory or network port. Make sure you have write permission for the new folder.
- Check Java from that folder. Run
java -versionand verify 64-bit Java 17 before the first launch. - Review memory arguments. Open
user_jvm_args.txt. Keep the existing syntax and adjust the heap values deliberately rather than deleting the file or replacing the launcher command. Begin with the project’s published allocation guidance and leave headroom for the operating system. - Run the supplied launcher. On Windows, double-click or execute
run.bat. On Linux or macOS, run./run.shfrom the server directory. The first run may install or generate Forge files and will normally stop when it reaches the license gate. - Accept the Minecraft EULA. Open the generated
eula.txt, read the license and change onlyeula=falsetoeula=trueif you accept it. Save the file and run the same launcher again. A server that stops at this point is behaving normally; it has not necessarily crashed. - Wait for a clean generation. Let the second launch create the world, configuration files and logs. The first generation can take longer than later starts because Forge and the pack build caches and registries.
- Stop cleanly once. After the server reaches its ready state, issue
stopin the server console and wait for the process to exit. This creates a safe point for configuration and a baseline backup.
Configure the generated server
Set core gameplay options in server.properties
Open server.properties only after the first successful generation. Set the server name or message, difficulty, whitelist behavior, view distance and any other values you understand. The configured port is also defined here; the default Minecraft server port is 25565, but changing server-port changes the port players must use.

The config directory contains mod settings. Change one category at a time, record what you changed and restart before changing another. Dimension, portal, world-generation and recipe settings can alter an existing save; do not experiment on the only copy of a world. Proximity voice chat may have its own configuration, so follow the options shipped with the selected pack rather than assuming it uses the Minecraft port.
Understand the operator console
Run administrative commands in the server console without a leading slash. Useful routine commands include list to see connected players, save-all before maintenance and stop for a clean shutdown. Avoid killing the process or closing the terminal while the world is saving; abrupt termination risks region and player-data loss.
Make every client match
Each player must install the same Abyssal Ascent release, Minecraft version and Forge loader line as the server. “Almost the same” is not sufficient for a heavily integrated pack.
- Match the complete pack version, including the patch number.
- Match Minecraft 1.20.1 or the older 1.19.2 line exactly; do not mix them.
- Use the Forge version expected by that pack release.
- Install all required client-side files and retain the pack’s configuration unless the server administrator provides a deliberate change.
- Remove old profile overrides that add a different mod, shader dependency or loader argument.
Have one player test a fresh client before distributing connection details. If that test succeeds, give the other players the same launcher profile or a written version checklist. A client rejection is usually faster to fix by comparing versions than by changing server settings.

Network a home-hosted server
Test locally first
From the host computer, connect using the local address shown by the operating system, or use localhost when the client is on the same machine. This separates mod and Java problems from router problems. Do not troubleshoot port forwarding until a local client can join and move around the world.
Allow the process through the firewall
When the operating system asks whether Java or the server may communicate, allow the intended private network profile. If you use a stricter firewall, create an inbound rule for the configured Minecraft port and the Java process, limited to the networks you trust. Recheck the rule after changing the port in server.properties.
Forward the configured port
Remote players normally need the host’s reachable address and the port forwarded from the router to the server computer. Minecraft’s official guidance identifies 25565 as the default; use the actual value in your properties file if you changed it. Router menus vary, but the required information is the same: the protocol supported by your setup, the external port, the internal port and the server computer’s stable local address.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Test from a different network, such as a mobile connection, rather than from inside the same Wi-Fi network. If local joining works but remote joining fails, check the port, firewall, router rule and the address given to players. Some internet connections use carrier-grade NAT and do not permit inbound forwarding; in that case a managed host or another relay-based solution may be necessary.
Self-hosting versus managed hosting
| Consideration | Self-hosted machine | Managed host |
|---|---|---|
| Setup effort | You install Java, extract the pack, run scripts and maintain the operating system | The provider supplies a server environment and a control panel or installer |
| File and config control | Full access to scripts, configs, logs and world files | Usually available through a panel or file manager, subject to provider limits |
| Backups | You schedule, verify and store them yourself | May be automated, but retention and restoration rules must be checked |
| Networking | You handle firewall rules, router forwarding and changing addresses | The provider normally exposes a public endpoint |
| Troubleshooting | You diagnose Java, Forge, memory, disk and network failures | The provider handles infrastructure; pack and configuration issues may remain yours |
| Ongoing cost | Uses existing hardware and electricity, with no stated hosting fee | Requires a subscription whose current price and limits vary |
| Version changes | You control when files and worlds are migrated | Convenience depends on the provider’s tested installer and rollback tools |
The project specifically names Kinetic Hosting as its recommended partner and says Abyssal Ascent is included in that provider’s one-click modpack installer, with updates tested on those servers. That can remove Java, script and router administration for a group that prefers convenience. Verify current plans, storage, backup retention, resource limits and commercial terms before subscribing; those details can change.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Back up before changing anything
Stop the server with the console stop command and wait for the process to exit. Copy the entire world directory, the config directory and the server files needed to reproduce the installation. Keep at least one copy away from the host machine. A backup that has never been restored is only an assumption, so periodically test opening a copy in a separate directory.
Best Value
- Play and share with friends on console, mobile and Windows 10
- discover community creations in the new in-game store
- access new mini games and game modes through servers
Use a dated naming scheme that records the pack release and Minecraft version, for example 2026-10-16-AA-0.2.3-1.20.1. Do not overwrite the last known-good backup when applying an update. Keep the original server directory intact until the updated world has started, generated expected dimensions and passed a player test.
Update or migrate a world safely
- Announce a maintenance window and stop the server cleanly.
- Make a complete backup of the world, configuration and current server files.
- Read the selected release’s notes and confirm that a matching server pack exists.
- Install the new release in a separate directory instead of replacing the old files in place.
- Copy only the data the release instructions require; do not blindly merge old
modsorconfigfiles. - Start the new directory with the supplied script and inspect the log for registry, dimension or missing-mod errors.
- Join with a matching client and test portals, inventories, recipes, bosses and previously visited areas.
- Keep the old directory and backup until the migration has been accepted by the players.
The multi-dimensional design raises the cost of an unplanned update. If the new release fails, stop it, restore the old directory and backup, and return players to the previous version rather than repeatedly launching a damaged save.
Troubleshooting by symptom
The process crashes before loading Forge
- Run
java -versionagain and verify 64-bit Java 17. - Confirm that the server pack, Minecraft version and Forge loader belong to the same Abyssal Ascent release.
- Launch from the supplied script so generated arguments and libraries are used.
- Read the first error and its preceding cause in the latest log; do not focus only on the final shutdown line.
The server stops and mentions EULA
Open the generated eula.txt, read the license, set eula=true only if you accept it, save and run the launcher again. Editing a different directory’s EULA file will not affect the server you are starting.
Files or mods appear to be missing
Redownload the server pack attached to the exact release and extract it into a clean directory. Do not repair it by copying an arbitrary client mods folder; client-only files and mismatched versions can create a different failure.
Players are rejected during connection
Compare the client’s complete pack version, Minecraft version and Forge loader with the server. Check for local profile overrides, then restart both sides after correcting them. A server running 0.2.3 should be joined by a 0.2.3 client, not by a 0.2.2.x or 1.19.2 installation.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesThe world lags or becomes unstable
Watch the server log and operating-system memory use while reproducing the problem. Begin with the project’s published allocation guidance, change user_jvm_args.txt gradually and leave memory for the host system. Also reduce view distance or simultaneous exploration if those settings are contributing to chunk generation load. More allocated RAM is not an automatic fix, particularly where the project warns about high allocations.
Friends cannot connect from outside the home
First prove that a local client can connect. Then verify the port in server.properties, the firewall rule, the router’s forwarding target and the public address supplied to players. Test from another network. If the host is behind carrier-grade NAT or the public address changes frequently, self-hosting may not provide a dependable endpoint.
Pre-launch checklist
- One release selected and recorded; no 1.19.2/1.20.1 mixing.
- Matching dedicated server pack downloaded for that release when available.
- 64-bit Java 17 confirmed with
java -version. - Server extracted into its own directory.
- Supplied
run.batorrun.shused instead of an improvised Forge command. - EULA accepted in the generated server directory.
server.propertiesandconfigreviewed after first generation.- Client profile matches the server’s pack, Minecraft and Forge versions.
- Local connection tested before firewall and router troubleshooting.
- World and configuration backup created before inviting players or updating.
Once those checks pass, Abyssal Ascent is ready for a controlled first session. Keep the release files, logs and backups together, and handle future pack changes as migrations rather than casual replacements.
