Ableton Live 12.3 brought Stem Separation and Splice integration—what still matters in 2026

Yes, Ableton Live 12.3 was released on November 25, 2025. Existing Live 12 owners received it as a free update. However, 12.3 is no longer the newest Live 12 build: Ableton’s release notes now list later 12.3 maintenance releases and newer 12.4 versions, including 12.4.3. Install the latest Live 12 version offered in your Ableton account rather than searching for an obsolete standalone 12.3 installer.

The important edition distinction is simple: Stem Separation is a Live 12 Suite feature, while Splice integration is available in Live 12 Suite, Standard, Intro and Lite. A free Splice account is enough to preview sounds and use available free samples; a paid plan opens broader catalog access.

What Live 12.3 introduced

Live 12.3 added two workflow features that matter most to remixers, DJs and sample-based producers:

  • Stem Separation: local, machine-learning-based processing that can create Vocals, Drums, Bass and Others tracks from an audio file.
  • Splice integration: Splice’s sound library appears in Live’s Browser, with synchronized previewing and Search with Sound.

Ableton announced the release on November 25, 2025, and made it free for existing Live 12 owners: Ableton’s release announcement. The features remain part of later Live 12 builds.

Which Live editions include each feature?

Live edition Stem Separation Splice integration
Live 12 Suite Yes Yes
Live 12 Standard No Yes
Live 12 Intro No Yes
Live 12 Lite No Yes

Stem Separation is documented as Suite-only in Ableton’s Stem Separation FAQ. Splice integration is included across Live 12.3 editions according to the Splice integration FAQ. Therefore, do not buy Suite solely to get Splice browsing.

What Stem Separation actually does

Stem Separation analyzes audio locally on your computer and estimates four broad source categories:

  1. Vocals
  2. Drums
  3. Bass
  4. Others, a residual category containing material such as synths, guitars, keys and effects

It is useful for making instrumentals or acapellas, creating mashups and DJ edits, practicing with backing tracks, chopping vocals or drums for samples, rebuilding arrangements and isolating useful phrases. It does not recover the original multitrack session, and Others is not an instrument-by-instrument extraction. Ableton’s Live manual documents the category behavior and limitations.

High Speed versus High Quality

High Speed processes all selected stems in one pass and is suited to experiments and rough edits. High Quality uses dedicated passes for Vocals, Drums and Bass, generally improving separation at the cost of more processing time. Even High Quality is an extraction estimate, not a promise of clean studio stems.

Realistic limitations

  • Reverb, delay, chorus and doubled vocals can remain in other outputs.
  • Hi-hats and other high-frequency percussion may leak into Others or Vocals.
  • Dense, distorted or live recordings are harder to separate.
  • Artifacts can sound warbly, watery or phase-like.
  • Vocals, drums and bass are broad classes; guitars, keys and effects remain grouped in Others.

For important material, treat the results as creative source material. Short, clean musical sections often work better than a full, heavily processed mix. EQ, gating, editing and spectral cleanup can make useful phrases more usable, but cannot recreate missing multitracks.

How to separate stems in Live

From the Browser

  1. Open Live’s Browser and locate an audio file or sample.
  2. Right-click the file and choose Separate Stems to New Audio Tracks.
  3. Select the stem categories you need.
  4. Choose High Speed or High Quality.
  5. Click Separate and wait for processing to finish.

Live creates the outputs on new audio tracks inside a Group Track. The original source is muted so it does not play alongside the extracted parts. Audio effects from the source track are also added to the resulting Group Track.

From Session or Arrangement View

  1. Select an audio clip.
  2. Right-click it and choose Separate Stems to New Audio Tracks.
  3. Select the categories and quality mode.
  4. Start separation, then edit the new clips like any other Live audio.

The command and related behavior are listed in Ableton’s Live 12 release notes.

Processing, hardware and privacy

Separation runs locally inside Live, so the audio does not need to be uploaded and an internet connection is not required during the actual separation. Processing time depends on CPU, Apple Silicon or Intel architecture, Windows hardware, operating-system version, file length and quality mode.

Ableton documents GPU acceleration on Apple Silicon Macs and CPU-based behavior on Intel Macs and Windows systems, while later maintenance releases have changed GPU behavior for particular macOS versions. Check the release notes for the build you install instead of assuming every Mac behaves identically.

If processing is slow or fails

  • Use a shorter clip instead of a whole song.
  • Choose High Speed while experimenting.
  • Close CPU-heavy applications.
  • Check available disk space; Live can report an insufficient-space error.
  • Update to the latest Live 12 build.
  • Avoid repeatedly rendering the same long file when one useful section is enough.

How Splice integration works

After signing in, Splice appears in Live’s Browser rather than requiring a separate browser window. You can browse and preview sounds, audition them in the Set’s key and tempo, license or download eligible samples, and drag them directly into a project.

Search with Sound

Search with Sound analyzes an audio source and recommends Splice sounds with similar sonic characteristics. Recommendations are not guarantees of harmonic fit, musical usefulness or licensing suitability, so audition each result in context and review the applicable Splice license.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Free account, subscription and internet access

  • A Splice account is required to sign in and drag samples into Live.
  • A free account supports previews and available free samples.
  • A paid plan provides access to a larger catalog and the Splice x Ableton Live plan.
  • The in-DAW catalog requires an active internet connection.
  • Samples already synced through Splice’s desktop application may be usable offline; that is different from browsing the in-DAW catalog offline.

See Ableton’s integration FAQ and Splice’s official FAQ for account and access details.

Installing the right Live version in 2026

  1. Check the installed Live version in the About or Help area; wording varies by operating system and build.
  2. If you own Live 12, sign in to your Ableton account and download the current Live 12 installer if the update is not offered automatically.
  3. Install the latest available Live 12 build, not an old 12.3 package.
  4. Confirm your edition: Stem Separation requires Suite.
  5. Sign into Splice from Live’s Browser when using its integration.
  6. Keep disk space available for rendered stems and downloaded samples.
  7. Back up important Sets before a major update.

Is upgrading worthwhile?

Existing Live 12 Suite users

Update at no additional software cost. Stem Separation is most valuable if you regularly remix, make mashups, create DJ edits, practice with backing tracks or want local processing without a separate service.

Existing Standard, Intro or Lite users

Upgrade to Suite only if native stem extraction justifies the cost. Splice integration is already included in your edition, and an occasional user may prefer an existing third-party tool or service.

New buyers

Choose Suite when stem extraction, Max for Live, the complete instrument and effect collection, and Suite’s larger content library all matter. Choose Standard, Intro or Lite when Splice browsing is the main attraction or your work is primarily original MIDI and recorded material.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Sample-focused producers

Test the free Splice account first. Do not purchase Suite solely for Splice. A paid Splice plan makes sense when its larger catalog and in-Live workflow justify a recurring subscription.

Alternatives

Moises is relevant when you want app or cloud-oriented stem processing without Live Suite. Serato Stems is aimed more at real-time DJ and performance control. An online service such as LALAL.AI can be useful for occasional pre-processing, but upload requirements, privacy, credits and Live integration differ. None should be assumed to produce identical results to Live without direct testing.

The Bottom Line

Bottom line: Live 12.3 is real, but it is a feature milestone rather than the newest Live version in 2026. Install the current Live 12 build. Choose Suite for built-in local Stem Separation; choose any Live 12 edition for Splice integration, with a free Splice account available for testing and free content.

Product prices and availability are accurate as of the date/time indicated and are subject to change. Any price and availability information displayed on Amazon at the time of purchase will apply.
