Aaron Judge was left off the New York Yankees’ American League Division Series roster against the Tampa Bay Rays because of a right calf strain, according to USA TODAY. The report said the Yankees’ network first reported the decision; a direct team roster announcement was not surfaced in the available reporting.
Why is Aaron Judge not playing against the Rays?
USA TODAY reported on October 3, 2026, that the Yankees omitted Judge from their ALDS roster because of the right calf strain. That report did not include a direct Aaron Boone quote explaining the later roster decision, so the reason established in the coverage is the injury—not a specific assessment of Judge’s readiness.
The article described Judge taking simulated at-bats at the Yankees’ Triple-A facility in Somerset, working out at the team’s Tampa spring training facility, and completing an off-day workout at Tropicana Field. Boone did not specify whether Judge had run the bases, so those reports do not establish whether he completed that particular step.
Judge also missed the Wild Card Series
Judge was not on the Yankees’ roster for the preceding Wild Card Series against Boston. The Associated Press reported on September 29 that Boone said Judge had worked hard to become available but was not ready for that series: “He’s had a good couple of weeks of obviously really grinding and doing everything he possibly can to be an option. Just felt like he’s not quite there yet.” That comment referred to the earlier Wild Card decision, not the subsequent ALDS roster choice.
