For a name update—even a minor correction—UIDAI directs you to an Aadhaar Seva Kendra (ASK). Online, the service supports address and document updates, not name changes.
What each route lets you do

How to request a name change at a centre
- Check the acceptable-document list. Visit UIDAI’s Aadhaar Online Services page and open the current “List of Acceptable Document for Aadhaar Enrolment and Update.” Choose evidence that fits the reason for your name change; one document is not guaranteed to apply to every case.
- Find a centre and check its services. Use UIDAI’s centre information to locate an Aadhaar Seva Kendra, confirm it handles the service you need, and book an appointment through the online appointment system used by UIDAI-run ASKs.
- Visit with your supporting evidence. Submit the name-update request at the centre. Keep the acknowledgement or reference number issued for your request.
- Track the request. UIDAI says submissions are subject to verification and validation. Submitting information does not guarantee that the Aadhaar record will be changed.
Documents: choose proof for your circumstances
UIDAI requires valid supporting documents, but the appropriate proof depends on the type of change. Check the current acceptable-document list before making the trip rather than assuming a particular identity document will always be accepted for every name update.

This can include a Gazette notification; old-name identity proof with a photograph for a first or full name change; or marriage, divorce, or adoption documents where applicable. Follow UIDAI’s current instructions for the specific exception request.

If you have already changed your name twice
UIDAI’s standard limit is two name updates in a lifetime. If a further request is rejected because you have reached that limit, the exception route is not an ordinary third update: UIDAI describes a request based on justification and verification, which the authority must decide.
Follow the escalation directions in UIDAI’s name-update limit and exception guidance. The current guidance says to contact UIDAI after an over-limit rejection and provide the latest enrolment acknowledgement along with supporting evidence relevant to your case. A request does not guarantee approval.

What the fee and timing information establishes
UIDAI’s centre information lists ₹75 for a separate demographic update and says the demographic update is free when completed at the same time as a biometric update. This is the published charge information accessed on 7 October 2026; check UIDAI’s live schedule before visiting because charges may change. The cited fee is for a demographic update at a centre, not an online name-change service.

- The same FAQ says: “Through this online portal, you can perform only Address and Document update.”
