To report a deceased family member’s Aadhaar, use UIDAI’s Reporting of Death of a Family Member service on myAadhaar when the jurisdiction where the death was registered is integrated. Have the deceased person’s Aadhaar number (if available), Death Registration Number and the demographic details requested by the portal. The reporting family member authenticates with their own Aadhaar. UIDAI verifies the submission; filing it does not by itself guarantee immediate deactivation.
What Aadhaar deactivation after death means
Aadhaar is an identity number, not a document that a family must physically surrender after a death. UIDAI can deactivate the number when it receives reliable information that the holder has died and verifies that information. The legal rule appears in Regulation 28(1)(ea)(i) of the 2025 amendment: “Where the Authority receives information regarding the death of an Aadhaar number holder including the Aadhaar number of the deceased individual, wherever available, the said information shall be verified in a manner as prescribed by the Authority, and upon such verification, the Aadhaar number shall be deactivated.”

That wording matters. A report starts a verification process; it is not an instant switch. UIDAI may validate the details and then deactivate the Aadhaar or take another appropriate action. There is no published ordinary-report processing time or automatic confirmation period established in the material available for this article.
The official route for a family member
UIDAI’s myAadhaar portal provides Reporting of Death of a Family Member for deaths registered in an integrated jurisdiction. The authenticated reporter enters information about the deceased person and submits it for UIDAI validation. UIDAI can also obtain death information through the Registrar General of India, a State Chief Registrar, another entity in the Aadhaar ecosystem or an individual who supplies information.

The online service is tied to the place where the death was registered, not necessarily to the address shown in the deceased person’s Aadhaar. Someone may therefore have an Aadhaar address in one State or Union Territory while the death record is held in another. Check the service for the death-registration jurisdiction.

Keep the original death certificate or an official copy available even if the portal does not ask you to upload an image. Do not assume that a paper visit, printer, scanner or certificate scan is required unless the current portal or UIDAI specifically says so.
What is the Death Registration Number?
It is the identifying number assigned by the authority that registered the death. It is normally printed on the death certificate or available from the civil-registration office or system that issued the record. It is not the Aadhaar number, hospital case number or cremation/burial receipt number. If you cannot find it, contact the death-registering authority before submitting the Aadhaar report.

Step-by-step: reporting a death on myAadhaar
- Obtain the death certificate. Ask the authority that registered the death for the certificate or the official record details. Confirm the Death Registration Number and spellings, date of birth and other particulars.
- Check jurisdiction availability. Open myAadhaar and look for Reporting of Death of a Family Member. Availability depends on the State or Union Territory where the death was registered. A launch announcement on 9 June 2025 covered 24 States/UTs; a November 2025 UIDAI/MeitY release reported 25. Those dated counts are not a current complete list, so rely on the live portal.
- Authenticate yourself. Sign in using the reporting family member’s Aadhaar authentication as directed by myAadhaar. Use contact details and authentication that belong to the reporter.
- Enter the deceased person’s details. Provide the Aadhaar number if available, the Death Registration Number and every demographic field requested. Transcribe names and dates exactly as they appear in the official records.
- Review before submission. Check digits in both identification numbers, the death-registration jurisdiction and the demographic match. A transposition can delay verification or cause the report to be associated with the wrong record.
- Submit and retain the acknowledgement. Save any reference number, screenshot or confirmation generated by myAadhaar. The report is an input to UIDAI’s verification process, not proof that the Aadhaar has already been deactivated.
- Allow UIDAI to validate. UIDAI may compare the submission with registration data or seek information from an authorised source. Do not file repeated reports merely because deactivation is not immediate; use the acknowledgement when asking UIDAI for help.
When the online service is unavailable
Portal coverage has expanded, but the dated announcements do not establish that every jurisdiction is integrated in 2026. If the death-registration State/UT is not offered, do not select a different jurisdiction simply because it matches the Aadhaar address. Keep the death certificate and registration number, monitor myAadhaar for the relevant jurisdiction’s availability and ask UIDAI through its official support channel, including helpline 1947, what route is currently accepted.
UIDAI’s rules also permit the Authority to source death information directly from government registrars and other Aadhaar-ecosystem entities. That means a family report is not the only possible source of information, and a family member cannot promise a particular date on which deactivation will occur.
What the family should not assume
- Not an instant deactivation: submission does not guarantee that the number is deactivated immediately or at all; verification comes first.
- Not necessarily a certificate upload: UIDAI recommends having the certificate, but the reviewed service description does not say that a scanned copy must be uploaded.
- Not a confirmed kinship-document requirement: the published description says the reporter authenticates and supplies the deceased person’s details; it does not list a separate proof-of-relationship document.
- Not tied to the Aadhaar address: service eligibility follows the death-registration jurisdiction.
- Not a request for a fee: the official instructions identify no payment for this administrative report. Be cautious of anyone demanding money or asking for unnecessary copies of identity documents.
- Not a replacement for estate administration: closing bank accounts, pensions, insurance, tax registrations, passports, mobile connections and other services requires contacting each organisation under its own rules.
Availability and rollout dates
UIDAI announced the family-member service on 9 June 2025 for deaths registered in 24 States/UTs and said integration of the remaining jurisdictions was in progress. A November 2025 release reported coverage in 25 States/UTs. In 2026, UIDAI’s description again emphasised that the Aadhaar-address State/UT can differ from the death-registration State/UT. Because integration can change, those figures should be treated as historical rollout snapshots, not as a promise that a particular jurisdiction is supported today.

Check the portal using the location of the civil death record. If a death was registered after a move, in a different hometown or through a municipal authority outside the Aadhaar address State, the latter location controls service availability.

An erroneous death match is a different case from reporting a genuine death. UIDAI’s July 2025 circular describes a reactivation route in which the living holder submits the prescribed application to the nearest UIDAI Regional or State Office by post, email or in person. The office examines the request and calls the holder to a designated Aadhaar centre for supervised full biometric capture: face, iris and fingerprints. That circular says the call is made within two weeks and that the office reports its decision within 30 days after biometric submission.
The July 2025 annexure asks for the holder’s Aadhaar number, name, gender, date of birth, address, district, State, mobile number, email address if available, signature or thumb impression, place and date. For a holder under 18, it also asks for parent details.

Important 2026 qualification: UIDAI’s memorandum index lists a newer reactivation procedure uploaded on 1 October 2026. The detailed file was not available in the material used here, so the July 2025 form, route and timelines should not be treated as a guarantee that the current procedure is unchanged. Before mailing an application, check UIDAI’s latest memorandum or confirm the required form and steps with helpline 1947.

- Use only UIDAI’s official myAadhaar domain or an office identified by UIDAI; avoid agents who request your Aadhaar OTP.
- Share the deceased person’s information only with the registrar, UIDAI or an organisation that has a legitimate administrative need.
- Compare the Aadhaar number and Death Registration Number digit by digit before submission.
- Keep the death certificate, acknowledgement and correspondence together so you can answer a verification query without creating a new report.
- Do not publish Aadhaar numbers, registration numbers or scans in public messages or social-media posts.
How many deceased Aadhaar numbers have been deactivated?
UIDAI said in a February 2026 announcement that more than 2.5 crore deceased persons’ Aadhaar numbers had been deactivated to that point. It is a cumulative figure reported by UIDAI in 2026, not a live counter or a forecast of the final total. It also does not tell an individual family when its own report will be completed.

A practical checklist before you submit
- Death certificate obtained from the registering authority.
- Death Registration Number copied exactly.
- Deceased person’s Aadhaar number located, if available.
- Names, dates and other demographic details checked against the official record.
- Death-registration State/UT identified separately from the Aadhaar address State/UT.
- Reporting family member ready for their own Aadhaar authentication.
- Current myAadhaar service availability checked.
- Reference number or acknowledgement saved after submission.
Common questions
Does the family have to submit a death certificate?
Obtain it first because UIDAI recommends reporting after the certificate is available and the portal asks for the Death Registration Number. The published service description reviewed does not establish that an image or scan of the certificate is a mandatory upload. Keep following the live portal’s instructions.

Is proof that I am related to the deceased required?
The published description says the family member authenticates and provides the deceased person’s Aadhaar number, Death Registration Number and demographic details. It does not list a separate kinship document. If the live portal requests additional evidence, follow that current instruction rather than relying on older or unrelated procedures.
Is Aadhaar deactivated as soon as the report is filed?
No. UIDAI validates the information before deactivation or another action. The service does not state an instant result or a standard processing time for ordinary reports.
Can I report a death registered in another State from the Aadhaar address?
Yes, where the death-registration jurisdiction is integrated. Eligibility follows the place that registered the death, even when the Aadhaar address shows another State or Union Territory.

The service description asks for the number if available. Gather the death certificate and registration details, then check the current portal or contact UIDAI for the accepted way to provide death information without that number. Do not guess a number.
What if the portal rejects a correct report?
Recheck the Death Registration Number, demographic spelling and jurisdiction against the certificate. Save the error message or reference number and ask UIDAI through its official support channel. Avoid submitting altered details simply to make the form pass.
