Short answer: A20 Pro is a meaningful upgrade over A19 Pro, but not every iPhone task will feel 20–40% faster. Independent tests show roughly 21% higher single-core and 29% higher multi-core performance in one comparison, substantially stronger graphics results, better long-session stability, and a large jump in an on-device AI benchmark. Those gains matter most for demanding games, video exports, computational photography and AI features. Messaging, web browsing, email and social apps should feel broadly similar because A19 Pro is already a fast flagship chip.
What A20 Pro changes compared with A19 Pro
A20 Pro is the processor used in the iPhone 18 Pro generation, while A19 Pro powers the iPhone 17 Pro models. The upgrade is not one single speed increase. It combines faster general-purpose processing, a larger graphics advantage, more memory bandwidth and stronger performance in workloads that use Apple’s neural-processing hardware.

Apple’s performance claims, reported by MacRumors in 2026, describe a 2-nanometer process, a six-core CPU with integrated Neural Accelerators, 50% more memory bandwidth, up to 20% faster CPU performance, up to 40% faster GPU performance and up to 40% better sustained performance than A19 Pro. Apple also describes a new seven-core GPU. Those are vendor claims under Apple’s stated testing conditions, not guarantees that every app or iPhone model will reach the same uplift.

The independent results broadly support a substantial generation-over-generation improvement, but they do not reproduce Apple’s claims in a single universal number. A benchmark stresses a particular part of the chip, and the phone’s cooling, software version, memory configuration and test duration affect the result.

NanoReview lists memory bandwidth of 115.2 GB/s for A20 Pro and 76.8 GB/s for A19 Pro. That is a 50% increase, matching Apple’s claim, and can help workloads that repeatedly move large data sets between the processor and memory. It does not mean every application runs 50% faster: many everyday tasks are limited by network response, storage, app design or user input rather than memory throughput.
Benchmark scoreboard: A20 Pro versus A19 Pro
The table separates benchmark versions and devices. Geekbench 6 and Geekbench 7 scores should not be combined into one ranking; Beebom specifically notes that the versions are not directly comparable. Tom’s Guide tested an iPhone 18 Pro against an iPhone 17 Pro, while Beebom’s headline comparison used an iPhone 18 Pro Max result against A19 Pro. The model and chassis differences are important when interpreting sustained tests.

| Tom’s Guide sustained-performance test, Pro models | 62.8% stability (iPhone 18 Pro) | 61.1% (iPhone 17 Pro) | |
| Tom’s Guide sustained-performance test, Pro Max models | 79.4% stability | 65.2% | The larger Pro Max result shows how cooling and device size can change sustained behavior. |
| AnTuTu 11, NanoReview | About 3.434 million | About 2.538 million | Use only as a same-version, same-platform comparison; iOS and Android AnTuTu implementations are not directly comparable. |
These figures answer “how much faster?” differently depending on the workload. CPU improvements are substantial but not uniform. The clearest practical separation appears in graphics frame rate, stress-test stability and the Geekbench AI result. Sustained-performance numbers also show why the phone model matters as much as the silicon.

How to read each benchmark
Geekbench single-core: interactive responsiveness
Single-core testing approximates short tasks that depend on one fast CPU core: launching or switching between app screens, processing a small request, running parts of a web page and handling brief bursts of system work. A 21–24% advantage is technically significant, but it does not translate into every app opening 21% sooner. App startup often includes storage access, network calls, animation and server response, all of which can hide CPU differences.
Geekbench multi-core: exports and parallel workloads
Multi-core scores are more relevant when software can divide a job across several cores. Examples include video encoding, photo batch processing, code compilation, large file transforms and some artificial-intelligence pipelines. The Tom’s Guide Geekbench 6 results put A20 Pro 2,812 points ahead of A19 Pro, while the Beebom comparison described a roughly 29% advantage. A creator exporting a long 4K project is more likely to benefit than someone sending a text message.

3DMark and graphics frame rate
3DMark Solar Bay stresses the GPU with a demanding graphics workload. Tom’s Guide recorded 61.93 frames per second on iPhone 18 Pro versus 46.4 fps on iPhone 17 Pro. The difference is 15.53 frames per second, or about one-third more in that run. Higher headroom can support higher graphics settings, steadier frame delivery and less need to reduce resolution in demanding games.
Stress-test stability: performance after the phone heats up
A short benchmark can show peak performance before the device reaches its thermal limits. A stress test repeats a demanding graphics workload and reports how much performance remains relative to the best loop. Beebom measured 80% stability for A20 Pro and 59.5% for A19 Pro, a 20.5-percentage-point advantage. That matters during a long game, repeated exports or extended augmented-reality use, when a phone may reduce clock speeds to control heat.

Tom’s Guide measured 69,245 for iPhone 18 Pro and 49,050 for iPhone 17 Pro in Geekbench AI 1.7. The roughly 41% gap indicates more local inference capacity in this suite. It does not prove that A20 Pro is the fastest AI phone in every workload: Tom’s Guide still found a competing Samsung device ahead in its cross-platform comparison. AI performance also depends on the model being run, precision, software frameworks and whether a task is processed on-device or in the cloud.
What you will notice in everyday iPhone use
Messaging, email and social apps
A19 Pro is already fast enough that ordinary communication apps should feel immediate. Opening a conversation, scrolling a feed, attaching a photo or switching between recent apps generally involves short bursts of work and network activity. A20 Pro may reduce occasional pauses and gives the system more future headroom, but benchmark scores will not make routine messaging feel twice as fast.
Web browsing
For browsing, A20 Pro can help with JavaScript-heavy pages, complex web applications and pages that render large images. The visible result still depends heavily on connection speed, browser behavior and the site’s servers. If your current iPhone 17 Pro loads sites promptly, the upgrade is unlikely to transform basic browsing.

Photography and computational imaging
Modern camera processing can combine multiple frames, apply noise reduction, segment subjects and perform computational effects before an image is saved. A20 Pro’s stronger CPU, GPU and neural hardware provide more processing margin for these jobs. You may see quicker completion of demanding effects or less waiting after a burst of photos, especially when the phone is already warm or processing many images. The benchmark evidence does not establish a universal improvement for every camera mode, so the benefit depends on Apple’s software and the specific feature.

Video work is one of the clearest CPU and GPU use cases. Multi-core performance can shorten encoding, while GPU capacity can accelerate timeline effects, color processing and previews when an app supports it. A20 Pro is the better choice for frequent high-resolution recording, multi-layer projects or repeated exports. The exact time saved depends on codec, resolution, effects, project length and the editing app; no controlled export-time comparison is provided by the cited tests.
On-device AI features
The Geekbench AI result suggests more local inference headroom for features that classify, transcribe, summarize or generate results on the phone. More headroom can reduce waiting and help keep processing local when an app supports it. It does not guarantee that every AI feature runs entirely on-device, nor that A20 Pro will beat every competing smartphone. Software support remains decisive.
Gaming: the biggest visible A20 Pro advantage
Higher frame-rate headroom
The Solar Bay result is the strongest direct evidence for gaming. A20 Pro’s 61.93 fps versus A19 Pro’s 46.4 fps gives developers and players more room for demanding lighting, geometry and effects. In games that already run at a fixed frame-rate cap, you may not see a higher displayed number; the benefit can instead appear as fewer drops when scenes become busy.
Long sessions and thermal behavior
The Wild Life Extreme stability results—80% for A20 Pro and 59.5% for A19 Pro—indicate a meaningful advantage once a game runs long enough to heat the phone. Actual results vary with ambient temperature, case use, screen brightness, frame-rate target and the individual game. A20 Pro is not immune to throttling, but it starts with more graphics capacity and retained performance in the cited loop.

Game settings still matter
Chip performance does not override a game’s software limits. Developers may cap frame rate, choose different rendering paths or release updates that change graphics quality. The practical question is whether you play titles that stress the GPU and whether you play long enough for stability to matter. For casual puzzle, card or turn-based games, A19 Pro already provides ample performance.
Sustained performance depends on the iPhone chassis
The test results do not support treating “A20 Pro performance” as identical across every iPhone 18 model. Tom’s Guide measured 62.8% sustained stability for the iPhone 18 Pro versus 61.1% for the iPhone 17 Pro in its Pro-model comparison. In the Pro Max comparison, stability was 79.4% versus 65.2%. The much larger gap in the Pro Max results shows that cooling design, surface area and device size can influence long workloads alongside the processor.
For a buyer, this means a larger phone may sustain demanding performance differently from a smaller model using the same chip. Do not use the Pro Max stability figure as a guaranteed result for the standard Pro. It is evidence about those tested devices and conditions, not a universal A20 Pro specification.

Upgrade when you will use the headroom
An iPhone 17 Pro owner should favor A20 Pro when the phone is used as a gaming device, a mobile editing workstation or an AI-heavy tool. The upgrade is also easier to justify if you routinely notice frame-rate drops, long exports or thermal slowdowns. In those cases, the graphics and sustained-performance improvements address a problem you can actually feel.

Keep A19 Pro when your use is light
If your routine is messaging, browsing, email, streaming and occasional photos, A19 Pro remains a high-performance chip. You may notice smoother behavior in a few heavy features on A20 Pro, but the day-to-day difference is unlikely to match the benchmark percentages. Keeping the iPhone 17 Pro can be the better value when you do not need the extra graphics, AI or sustained-performance margin.

Is A19 Pro still good enough?
Yes. A19 Pro is not a slow or obsolete processor; it is the previous flagship generation. Its score of 3,834 single-core and 9,988 multi-core in Tom’s Guide’s Geekbench 6 run is already more than sufficient for current communication, browsing, productivity and mainstream games. The lower 59.5% stress-test stability result matters mainly to people who sustain heavy graphics workloads. A19 Pro’s suitability should be judged by your apps and habits, not by the existence of a faster successor.
What the benchmarks cannot tell you
Battery life
The cited evidence does not include a controlled battery comparison. A20 Pro’s newer process and efficiency changes could affect endurance, but the benchmark results alone cannot establish a specific battery-life improvement. Do not buy the newer chip expecting a guaranteed number of additional hours.
Long-term software support
A20 Pro has more performance margin for future iOS features and heavier applications, but no cited source quantifies how many additional years it will remain supported or comfortable. Longevity is a reasonable consideration, not a measured promise.
Every app and every phone
Benchmarks are controlled workloads. App developers may optimize differently, games may impose frame-rate caps and thermal behavior changes with room temperature, cases, brightness and device size. The figures are useful for identifying trends—especially graphics and AI headroom—not for predicting an exact loading time for your personal app library.
A practical way to decide
- Identify the workload you care about. Choose CPU scores for exports and other parallel jobs, graphics tests for gaming, Geekbench AI for local inference and stress-test stability for long sessions.
- Check whether your current iPhone 17 Pro has a real limitation. Note frame-rate drops, export waits, repeated thermal slowdowns or delays in AI features rather than relying on a headline percentage.
- Match the comparison to the model size. Pro and Pro Max sustained results are not interchangeable; the chassis affects cooling.
- Keep benchmark versions separate. Compare Geekbench 6 with Geekbench 6 and Geekbench 7 with Geekbench 7. Do not merge their scores into one chart.
- Use same-platform comparisons for AnTuTu. NanoReview’s A20 Pro and A19 Pro figures are useful within AnTuTu 11, but iOS and Android implementations should not be treated as directly equivalent.
- Make the upgrade decision around your heaviest recurring task. If that task is graphics, video or on-device AI, A20 Pro’s advantage is substantial. If it is ordinary communication and browsing, A19 Pro remains sufficient.
Verdict
A20 Pro is a substantial generational upgrade, with its most convincing advantages in GPU performance, long-session stability and on-device AI, followed by a clear CPU improvement. The Tom’s Guide results show 61.93 fps versus 46.4 fps in Solar Bay and 69,245 versus 49,050 in Geekbench AI, while Beebom’s stress test shows 80% versus 59.5% stability. Those are meaningful gains for demanding users.
For ordinary iPhone 17 Pro use, the experience remains broadly similar because A19 Pro is already very fast. Upgrade to an iPhone 18 Pro for the stronger graphics, sustained workloads or AI capability—not because every message, web page or social feed will suddenly run 20–40% faster.
