For demanding games on the A20 Pro iPhone generation—the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max in 2026 coverage—use Game Mode whenever the title supports it, leave Low Power Mode off when peak frame-rate capability matters, and use Adaptive Power between or around sessions when battery conservation is more important than an unchanged power profile. Lower brightness, reduce unnecessary background activity, and monitor app usage in Settings > Battery. These changes improve the trade-off between responsiveness, endurance and heat without promising a universal FPS or gaming-runtime number.
The best starting configuration
Before launching a visually demanding game, choose the setting according to your priority. Game Mode is the performance-first choice for supported games. Low Power Mode is an emergency battery setting, not a high-refresh gaming setting: Apple says it limits ProMotion iPhones to a 60-frame-per-second display refresh rate and may make some tasks slower. Adaptive Power is useful for conserving charge during the rest of the day, but Apple says it does not manage performance while you play a game with Game Mode enabled.

| Setting | Peak frame-rate capability | Battery endurance | Display and background behavior | Use it when |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Game Mode on (supported game) | Best available responsiveness for that game | Prioritizes performance over maximum savings | Game-specific performance mode; Adaptive Power does not manage performance during this session | You want the most consistent controls and frame-rate capability |
| Low Power Mode on | ProMotion display refresh is limited to 60 fps | Extends remaining charge | May reduce background activity and make some tasks slower | Your battery level matters more than high-refresh play |
| Adaptive Power on | Does not manage performance during games with Game Mode on | Can reduce daily consumption and can automatically enable Low Power Mode at 20% | May lower brightness, limit background activity and make performance adjustments | You want automatic savings outside maximum-performance sessions |
| Lower brightness and less background work | Not a guaranteed FPS increase | Reduces power draw | Dimmer screen and fewer background tasks | You are balancing heat and battery life during a long session |
Change Game Mode first
Why it is the performance setting
Leave Game Mode on for a supported title when low input latency and the highest available refresh rate are your goals. The mode is designed for a game session, while Adaptive Power is intended to manage ordinary daily consumption. Apple’s Adaptive Power documentation specifically excludes performance management while playing games with Game Mode on, so enabling Adaptive Power does not mean the feature will deliberately slow that session.
What Game Mode cannot guarantee
Game Mode does not turn every game into a fixed frame-rate target. Actual results depend on the game’s graphics options, resolution, scene complexity, software updates, network conditions and the phone’s temperature. The available evidence does not establish a universal A20 Pro FPS figure for all games. Treat the mode as the correct starting point, then use the game’s own graphics and frame-rate controls if it exposes them.

Keep Low Power Mode off for high-refresh play
Why it can reduce the experience
On iPhone models with ProMotion display technology, Apple states that Low Power Mode limits display refresh to 60 frames per second. It may also make some tasks slower. That does not necessarily mean a game will render at exactly 60 frames per second in every scene; it means the display cannot present a refresh rate above that limit while the mode is active.
When turning it on is sensible
Enable Low Power Mode when preserving the charge needed to finish a journey, tournament round or workday is more important than peak smoothness. It is a battery fallback, not a performance tweak. Turn it back off before a competitive or visually demanding session if you want the ProMotion panel and the game to operate without that 60-fps ceiling.
Configure Adaptive Power for the rest of the day
Exact path
- Open Settings.
- Tap Battery.
- Open Power Mode.
- Turn on Adaptive Power.
What Adaptive Power changes
Apple says Adaptive Power can lower screen brightness, limit background activity and make performance adjustments to conserve power throughout the day. It can also automatically turn on Low Power Mode when the battery reaches 20 percent. These are deliberate trade-offs: a dimmer screen and less background work save energy, but they are not guaranteed frame-rate boosters in a game.
Give it time to learn
Apple’s support guidance says Adaptive Power needs at least seven days to learn your charging habits before it engages. Do not judge its automatic behavior immediately after enabling it. During a Game Mode session, Apple says Adaptive Power does not manage performance while you use a maximum-performance feature such as a supported game with Game Mode on.

Reduce power draw without claiming extra FPS
Lower the screen brightness
Screen brightness is one of the most direct controls you can change during a long session. Reducing it lowers power use, particularly when the display remains on continuously. Make the change only as far as you can still see dark scenes and interface text clearly; the evidence supports a battery benefit, not a guaranteed increase in rendered frames.
Limit background work
Close or pause activities that continue needlessly while you play, such as downloads, video uploads or location-heavy tasks. Adaptive Power and Low Power Mode both include limits on background activity, according to Apple. Background reduction helps endurance, but it should be described as a power-saving measure rather than a promise of higher in-game performance.
Check which app is consuming charge
- Open Settings.
- Tap Battery.
- Review each app’s proportion of battery use and the activity categories iOS reports.
Apple says iOS identifies each app’s share of battery consumption and calls out background activity. If a social, video or cloud app is using an unexpectedly large share, address that process before blaming the game or changing performance settings.

Manage heat during long sessions
Why results vary
Sustained performance depends on the model, workload and duration. A short benchmark can look different from an hour of continuous rendering, and no published source here supplies a universal temperature limit or frame-rate guarantee for A20 Pro gaming.

Practical steps
- Take a break if the phone becomes uncomfortably hot.
- Remove a heat-trapping case during a long session when practical and safe.
- Keep vents and the rear surface clear rather than playing under bedding or in direct sun.
- Do not interpret a cooler chassis by itself as proof of a specific FPS gain.
An iPhone-compatible game controller can make long sessions more comfortable by moving controls off the glass. A phone cooler is an optional thermal accessory, not a required setting change; no Apple setting guarantees that either accessory will raise frame rate or prevent heat.
What A20 Pro performance evidence actually shows
The A20 Pro claims and tests describe capability, not a guaranteed result in every game. MacObserver’s September 2026 review recorded Apple’s generation-over-generation claims of up to 40 percent faster seven-core GPU performance, up to 20 percent faster six-core CPU performance, up to 50 percent more memory bandwidth and up to 40 percent better sustained performance. Apple did not disclose game-specific test conditions for those figures, so they should not be rewritten as a promise that every title will run a stated percentage faster.
| Phone and test | Result | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| iPhone 18 Pro, 3DMark Solar Bay Unlimited | 61.93 fps; score 16,288 | Tom’s Guide synthetic result from 2026, not a guaranteed in-game frame rate |
| iPhone 18 Pro Max, 3DMark Solar Bay Unlimited | 67.9 fps; score 17,850 | Tom’s Guide synthetic result from 2026, useful for this test workload only |
| iPhone 17 Pro, 3DMark Solar Bay Unlimited | 46.4 fps; score 12,208 | Prior-generation comparison in the same reported test |
| iPhone 17 Pro Max, 3DMark Solar Bay Unlimited | 46.6 fps; score 12,260 | Prior-generation comparison in the same reported test |
| iPhone 18 Pro, sustained-performance stability | 62.8% | Tom’s Guide 2026 stability score; test-specific |
| iPhone 18 Pro Max, sustained-performance stability | 79.4% | Tom’s Guide 2026 stability score; test-specific |
The Pro Max’s higher Solar Bay result and stability score show why model choice matters for sustained workloads, but they do not isolate one cause. Screen size, thermal design and battery capacity can all affect the experience, and the published test does not establish that the same percentage will appear in a particular game.

TechRadar reported that Real Flight Simulator, Wuthering Waves and Genshin Impact ran smoothly in its testing and that heat was distributed better than on the prior generation. “Smoothly” is a review observation under that test setup, not a universal setting or FPS guarantee for every player, update or ambient temperature.

The same review reported Apple’s video-playback claims of up to 36 hours for iPhone 18 Pro and up to 45 hours for iPhone 18 Pro Max. Those figures are video-playback claims, not gaming-runtime measurements. Real-world battery life varies with brightness, cellular or Wi-Fi use, graphics load, audio, temperature and the game itself, so use Settings > Battery to evaluate your own sessions.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.A repeatable setup for a demanding session
- Update the game and iOS, then close work you do not need during play.
- Confirm that the title supports Game Mode and leave Game Mode on when responsiveness is the priority.
- Check Settings > Battery > Power Mode; keep Low Power Mode off for high-refresh play.
- Use Adaptive Power if you want automatic savings outside the session, remembering that it may take at least seven days to learn your charging habits.
- Set brightness to the lowest level that keeps the game readable.
- Start the session with the phone uncovered when practical, and take a break if it becomes uncomfortably hot.
- After playing, review Settings > Battery to see whether the game or another app accounted for most of the drain and whether background activity was involved.
Choosing between iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max for gaming
The available comparison evidence supports a test-specific advantage for the Pro Max in sustained synthetic work: 67.9 fps and 17,850 in Tom’s Guide’s Solar Bay Unlimited result, versus 61.93 fps and 16,288 for the Pro, with stability scores of 79.4 percent and 62.8 percent respectively. The Pro Max also offers the larger screen. Those observations should be weighed against the practical differences in handling and portability; the sources here do not provide a complete thermal-engineering specification or a universal gaming battery-runtime number for either model.
Choose based on the games you play, the size you can comfortably hold and whether sustained-test stability matters more to you than a smaller phone. Do not select a model solely from Apple’s “up to” percentages or from a synthetic score and assume the same result in every title.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Common mistakes and fixes
Using Low Power Mode to chase more FPS
Symptom: motion feels less fluid on a ProMotion iPhone. Fix: turn Low Power Mode off for the session, because Apple documents its 60-fps refresh limit.
Best Value
Expecting Adaptive Power to boost a game
Symptom: enabling Adaptive Power produces no visible frame-rate increase. Fix: treat it as an all-day battery feature. Apple excludes Game Mode sessions from its performance management, and its brightness and background limits are savings measures.
Comparing a benchmark with an in-game FPS counter
Symptom: a Solar Bay score does not match a game’s reported frame rate. Fix: keep synthetic scores in their test context. Game engine, graphics preset, resolution, scene and temperature determine the in-game result.
Assuming a video-runtime claim equals gaming endurance
Symptom: a session ends sooner than the advertised “up to” hours. Fix: remember that the 36-hour Pro and 45-hour Pro Max figures are Apple video-playback claims, not gaming tests.
Bottom line for A20 Pro gaming
Use Game Mode for supported games, keep Low Power Mode off when peak refresh and responsiveness matter, and use Adaptive Power for background and between-session savings. Lower brightness, control background work and inspect Settings > Battery to find the real source of drain. A20 Pro reviews point to stronger graphics and sustained performance, with the Pro Max ahead in one synthetic test, but neither Apple’s “up to” claims nor benchmark results can guarantee a universal FPS, temperature or gaming-runtime outcome.
