Pa 30 is considered a likely remnant of the supernova recorded in 1181. The leading explanation is that the blast was an unusually faint Type Iax thermonuclear supernova that failed to destroy the white dwarf system completely. No one observed a star survive the explosion in real time: “zombie star” is shorthand for what astronomers infer from the object seen today.
What is the zombie star?
It is the central white dwarf in Pa 30, a nearly circular nebula in Cassiopeia. NASA describes Pa 30 as a contender for the remnant of the 1181 supernova, an event historical records say remained visible for 185 consecutive days. That makes the connection compelling, but the careful wording is “candidate” or “likely remnant,” not a confirmed identification. NASA’s 2024 account of Pa 30 and the historical event outlines the match.

The white dwarf is striking in its own right. NASA’s March 2024 explainer estimates its temperature at about 200,000 degrees Celsius and reports a stellar-wind speed of up to 16,000 km/h. These are approximate characteristics reported in that account, not a claim that the star is directly visible to the unaided eye.

The name captures the leading interpretation: the stellar system underwent a thermonuclear explosion but left a hot remnant behind. In NASA’s explanation, the proposed event is a sub-luminous Type Iax supernova, a less luminous kind of thermonuclear supernova that can leave a white dwarf rather than completely destroying the system. The account associates this scenario with two white dwarfs merging.

That history is an interpretation of the present-day star and nebula. Astronomers did not watch the 1181 event close enough to see what happened to the stellar core, so “surviving remnant” describes the model that best explains the evidence, not a directly witnessed escape from the blast. Type Iax is a specific class of supernova; it is not a general label for every explosion that leaves something behind.
What did the newest images reveal?
Gemini North images taken with its GMOS instrument resolve fine structure in Pa 30’s ejecta. Rather than smooth, uninterrupted streaks, the radial filaments appear as chains of bright knots. Study lead Timothy Cunningham described the view to the Center for Astrophysics | Harvard & Smithsonian: “Instead of simple streaks, we see chains of bright knots extending outward from the center.” The team reports about an order of magnitude more detected [S II] filaments than previous studies. The finding gives astronomers a sharper observational constraint for models of how the ejecta formed; it does not, by itself, identify the cause of the knots. The Center for Astrophysics’ October 6, 2026 release describes the images and their significance.

The paper, submitted October 5, 2026 and listed as in press at The Astrophysical Journal, also reports that the central remnant’s transverse kick is below about 100 km/s at the 3σ confidence level. This is an upper limit on motion across the sky, not proof that the explosion was perfectly symmetric. The paper infers a characteristic knot diameter of about 1016 cm from the [S II] filament widths; because the measured width is only slightly broader than the seeing, that size should not be treated as a sharply resolved direct measurement. The study’s abstract and paper details provide the technical findings.
What is observed, and what remains an explanation?
| What the observations show | What astronomers infer |
|---|---|
| Pa 30 has a central white dwarf and expanding nebular material; Gemini North/GMOS images show radial filaments with chains of knots. | Pa 30 is the likely remnant of the 1181 supernova, and the event may have been a sub-luminous Type Iax thermonuclear explosion that left a white dwarf remnant. |
| The central star’s transverse kick has a reported 3σ upper limit of about 100 km/s. | The constraint informs models of the explosion, but does not prove a perfectly symmetric blast. |
| Knot-like structure is visible in the filaments. | Variations in surrounding material density or temperature are possible explanations for the structure, not causes directly imaged in the observations. |
How astronomers study Pa 30
Pa 30 is investigated with professional observatories, not as an ordinary backyard target. NASA’s 2024 overview combines X-ray, infrared and optical observations to show different aspects of the nebula and its central star. The newer fine-detail result comes from Gemini North/GMOS imaging. Those views answer different questions: broad multi-wavelength observations establish the object’s context, while the new optical images expose knot structure within its filaments. NASA’s overview describes the multi-wavelength observations.

Why the discovery matters
Pa 30 offers astronomers a rare way to test what an incomplete thermonuclear explosion leaves behind. The central white dwarf and surrounding ejecta are the key pieces of that picture; resolving the filaments into knots adds detail that models must account for. The star’s limited transverse motion is another constraint, while the proposed merger history and the physical origin of the knots remain explanations to test rather than facts visible in the images.
