Brothers Saeed and Mohammed Hassan fled al-Khokha with their families as fighting intensified nearby. Their journey south took about a week: after leaving in separate pickup trucks, both families reached Mukalla on September 16, 2026, having faced explosions, shortages and delays on the road. Their arrival did not end the strain; they had lost their home and belongings, and the brothers had not found work.

Why the brothers decided to leave

Al Jazeera’s October 3, 2026, feature says government forces began withdrawing from front lines near al-Khokha on September 9. Saeed Hassan first thought the movement might be tactical. Seeing the scale of the withdrawal changed his mind, and he persuaded his brother Mohammed to leave with him.

The report describes shelling and explosions, retreating soldiers and a missile strike near a displacement camp. As the danger grew, the brothers’ families left quickly, losing their home and belongings. They had already been displaced once: in 2018, they fled the countryside near Hodeidah.

“The explosions were intensifying, and the three people with me kept asking me to hurry, fearing that the Houthis would catch up with us.”

Saeed told Al Jazeera this as he described the pressure to keep moving. The account is a family’s experience during a fast-changing conflict, not an independent assessment of battlefield conditions.

What the families faced on the road

The brothers traveled in separate pickup trucks. The roughly weeklong journey was punctuated by practical setbacks and insecurity: a tire failed, shops were closed, water was scarce, checkpoints brought long waits, and fuel, food and shelter were difficult to find.

The families passed through Aden and Abyan on their way south. Al Jazeera reports that both reached Mukalla on September 16. The feature does not give separate arrival dates for the two households.

What happened after they reached Mukalla

In Mukalla, the families rented a three-room flat. They had arrived without the belongings they left behind, and the brothers had not found work by the time Al Jazeera published its report.

Mohammed Awadh, identified in the report as head of the government displacement unit in Taiz, described the arrivals’ needs: “The displaced people arrived in Mukalla leaving everything they owned behind. Consequently, they are in need of even the most basic assistance.” The feature establishes those basic needs but does not identify a specific aid provider or donation route.

How the family’s flight fits the wider displacement

Al Jazeera reported that Yemen’s Executive Unit for the Management of Displaced Persons Camps put the number displaced since early September 2026 at 197,906 people (29,519 families). The report said the total had been about 100,000 two weeks earlier. These are figures attributed to the unit by Al Jazeera; the underlying report, its publication date and methodology are not established in the available account, so the figures should not be read as independently verified here.

The reported total provides context for the brothers’ journey, but it is not a measure of their particular route or circumstances. Their story shows how a sudden shift near the front line became a week of flight, followed by the challenge of starting over in Mukalla.
