A Year of Water Splitting from One Device? What the 2,200-Hour Test Really Showed

A 2014 report said a photoelectrochemical (PEC) cell split water continuously for more than 2,200 hours—described as the equivalent of a year of outdoor operation. That was an equivalence, not a year-long outdoor trial. The experiment’s corrosion-control design was notable, but its runtime alone does not establish commercial readiness.

What the “year” claim means

Chemistry World reported on 21 November 2014 that a US team led by Nathan Lewis at Caltech ran a PEC water-splitting device continuously for more than 2,200 hours. The report framed that duration as equivalent to one year of outdoor operation. It did not report testing the cell outdoors for a year.

The device was a research cell, not a consumer hydrogen generator. The report also said it achieved 100% Faradaic efficiency for oxygen evolution: in the reported measurement, the charge passed was fully accounted for by oxygen production. That figure describes the oxygen-evolution reaction, not the device’s solar-to-hydrogen efficiency or overall commercial performance.

How the design addressed photocorrosion

Photocorrosion occurs when a semiconductor electrode degrades in the electrolyte instead of reliably driving water-splitting reactions. The Lewis team combined three design elements to mitigate that problem:

  • Safe and Reliable Construction: Manufactured with advanced technology and materials, this lab electrolysis apparatus ensures safe usage during experiments, providing a secure learning environment for educators and students alike
  • Versatile Laboratory Use: Suitable for electrolysis experiment teaching, scientific research, and demonstration purposes, this electrolysis scientific apparatus meets diverse needs in educational and industrial scientific settings
  • Compact and Portable Size: with dimensions of approximately 6.49 by 4.52 by 2.75 inches and weighing about 7.51 ounces, this compact electrolysis kit is easy to handle and store, ideal for classroom and laboratory use
  • Silicon microwire arrays: Their many small structures increased electrochemically active sites relative to the electrode’s surface area, reducing effective current density at the electrode–electrolyte interface.
  • A protective conductive coating: The coating acted as a corrosion-resistant barrier while allowing charge transfer needed for the reaction.
  • An oxygen-evolution catalyst: This promoted water oxidation at the electrode.

The aim was to protect the semiconductor without blocking the electrochemical process. As Chemistry World reported it, photoelectrochemist Brian Seger of the Technical University of Denmark said: “The fact that the Lewis group could test their device for three months with no noticeable corrosion indicates that this hurdle is surmountable.” That was Seger’s assessment of the result, not evidence that all PEC systems avoid corrosion.

What the report does—and does not—establish

The 2014 coverage cites M. R. Shaner and colleagues’ paper in Energy & Environmental Science (2015), DOI 10.1039/c4ee03012e. The coverage establishes the reported runtime, oxygen-evolution Faradaic efficiency, and broad corrosion-mitigation strategy. It does not provide enough detail to establish the experiment’s full protocol, such as its illumination conditions, electrolyte, pressure, or exact geometry; those specifics should not be inferred from the “year” comparison.

Consfly Water Electrolyzer Quick Water Quality Tester Water Purity Filter Measuring Tool Home Use
  • 【Features】: This Water Electrolyzer is very easy to operate, quick test and obvious results. It provides the simplest and cheapest way to test water quality. Look at your drinking water situation.
  • 【How to use】1.Take two capacity of 100 ~ 150 ml of transparent glass, a cup of ordinary water (tap water), another cup of mineral water or after the depth of purification of water (pure water or distilled water), side by side on the table. 2.Place the ends of the installed electrolyzer into each of the two glasses and plug in the power supply. 3. Press the power switch button on the electrolyzer to the ON to start. About 30 seconds later, turn off the electrolyzer and take it out.
  • 【Working Principle】:The water electrolyzer is an electric field placed into the water, consisting of positive and negative electrodes (iron rods and aluminum rods). After powered on, positively charged + ions released from the iron rod, and the negative electrolyte ions in the water to react, generating insoluble metal clusters, while cohesion and adsorption of the water colloid, organic matter, inorganic substances.
  • 【Working Principle】:And due to the role of the current, the original metal particles dissolved in water, such as lead, arsenic, chromium, manganese, potassium, cobalt, etc. was reduced out, and gradually gathered into metal clusters, due to different metal ions of different color, thus producing color separation.
  • 【Safety warning】:After connecting the power supply, hands should not be grasped on the electrodes; fingers should not be put into the test water; do not let children play with the electrolyzer. After the electrolyzer is used up, dry the electrodes with a dry cloth and wipe the water on the iron rod with a fine gauze, and keep it properly.

The report also quoted materials scientist Dongyuan Zhao of Fudan University describing the work as a breakthrough and saying it “shows great potential for industrial application.” That was an expert’s positive view, not a finding that the cell was ready for industrial deployment.

How later demonstrations compare

Later scale-up examples help put the early PEC result in context, but they use a different architecture: immobilized photocatalyst sheets rather than the Lewis group’s silicon-microwire photoelectrode. A 2025 review in Smart Materials and Devices describes fixing photocatalyst powder as a thin layer on a substrate, which can reduce the need to keep powder dispersed and make recovery or replacement easier. It discusses one-step photocatalysis as well as two-step Z-scheme systems, in which separate photocatalysts drive hydrogen and oxygen evolution and charge transfer closes the reaction cycle.

Demonstration Reported scale and duration Reported performance Important qualification
Lewis group PEC cell, reported in 2014 More than 2,200 hours of continuous water splitting 100% Faradaic efficiency for oxygen evolution The “one year” was an outdoor-operation equivalence, not a year outdoors. The cited coverage does not establish a solar-to-hydrogen efficiency figure.
Photocatalytic overall-water-splitting demonstration, reviewed in 2025 1 m²; duration not stated in the review summary About 0.4% solar-to-hydrogen (STH) efficiency Reported under natural sunlight; this is a photocatalytic demonstration, not the 2014 PEC architecture.
Immobilized SrTiO₃:Al system, reviewed in 2025 100 m²; operated for more than a year Peak STH conversion efficiency of 0.76% under optimized conditions The peak is not representative annual output. The system used 1,600 reactor units and required regular photocatalyst-sheet replacement.
Sm₂Ti₂O₅S₂/CNT/BiVO₄ device, reviewed in 2025 270 hours Efficiency not stated in the review summary Reported without noticeable attenuation under the review’s summarized conditions; it is a separate device, not a reproduction of the Lewis design.

The 2025 review also identifies cumbersome sheet replacement, low efficiency, and negative energy balance as challenges for the 100 m² system. A large area or long operating period is therefore not, by itself, evidence of an efficient, low-maintenance system.

How to interpret water-splitting performance claims

Solar-to-hydrogen (STH) efficiency measures the chemical energy stored in produced hydrogen against incident solar energy. Apparent quantum efficiency (AQE), by contrast, compares photons used in the reaction with incident photons at a specified wavelength. They are different metrics and should not be treated as interchangeable.

When comparing demonstrations, look for the architecture, device area, light source, operating conditions, continuous runtime, degradation, and maintenance needs. Efficiency also needs context: a peak value under optimized conditions says something different from sustained performance over ordinary operation. Gas separation and safety, system integration, energy balance, and cost matter to deployment, but the cited summaries do not establish those details for the 2014 cell.
