When household power fails, many plug-in wireless dog fence transmitters stop sending the boundary signal. Unless you have confirmed that your exact system has compatible backup power, move your dog to secure physical containment until the fence is operating again. Outage behavior varies by model, and some manuals warn that a dog near the boundary may still receive a correction as the system shuts down.
What happens to the fence and collar?
A wireless fence that depends on a mains-powered transmitter may lose its boundary signal when the power goes out. For the PetSafe models covered by their manuals, the system is designed to recognize the outage and shut down without activating the receiver collar. However, those manuals also warn that a dog close to the boundary zone may receive a static correction during the failure.

That behavior is not a universal specification. A GPS-based or battery-powered design may respond differently, so check the manual for the exact transmitter and collar you own. Until you verify that its boundary remains active, treat the fence as unavailable for containment.

How the documented systems differ
| System | Documented outage behavior | Alarm or backup details |
|---|---|---|
| PetSafe Free to Roam Wireless Fence | Manual says it recognizes outages and shuts down without activating the receiver collar; a dog near the boundary zone may still receive a static correction. | Intermittent transmitter alarm for more than 20 minutes. This is alarm duration, not backup runtime. PetSafe manual and FAQ |
| PetSafe Wireless system (PIF-300-21) | Manual describes the same shutdown behavior and boundary-zone caveat. | Suggests considering a transmitter battery-backup device where outages are frequent; it does not specify a universal device or runtime. PIF-300-21 manual |
| PetSafe Stay + Play Wireless Fence | Manual describes shutdown without activating the receiver collar, with a possible correction for a dog near the boundary. | Intermittent transmitter alarm for up to 30 minutes; this is not a stated battery-backup runtime. Stay + Play manual |
| Invisible Fence Brand outdoor system | Company FAQ says the system continues operating during a power failure when its optional battery backup is in use. | Advises considering alternate containment if the outage lasts an hour or more. No universal runtime is stated. Invisible Fence FAQ |
What to do during an outage
- Secure your dog physically. Use a secure indoor area, gate, or other suitable containment and supervise your dog until you know the boundary is active again. Invisible Fence advises considering alternate containment when an outage lasts an hour or more.
- Do not test the transmitter while your dog wears the collar. PetSafe directs owners to remove the receiver collar before deliberately removing transmitter power or performing transmitter tests, because an intentional loss of power may cause an unintended correction. Follow the instructions in your own model’s manual.
- Use backup power only if the system supports it. PetSafe suggests a transmitter battery-backup device for areas with frequent cuts, and Invisible Fence describes an optional backup battery for its system. Neither source establishes a universal UPS compatibility list, electrical rating, or runtime. Check your transmitter’s manual and the backup unit’s specifications before connecting anything.
- Distinguish a transmitter outage from a collar battery problem. A replacement or recharged collar battery can address a collar that will not power on, but it cannot restore a transmitter boundary signal during a household outage. PetSafe’s support guidance covers battery checks for named collar models: receiver-collar power troubleshooting.
What to verify before relying on backup
- Whether the exact transmitter model supports a backup battery or other backup-power arrangement.
- The backup’s documented runtime for that specific setup; do not infer it from the duration of an outage alarm.
- How the manufacturer says the transmitter and receiver collar behave when power fails and when it returns.
- Whether the proposed backup equipment meets the transmitter’s electrical requirements.
- How you will contain your dog if the outage outlasts the verified backup runtime.
